LAN-OAK PARK DISTRICT PARK NOTES Fall 2017 Summer is construction season for the park district and we were busy this past summer bringing new, improved park amenities to Lansing! Lansing’s community playground at Lan Oak Park opened in June featuring super high slides, new unique play amenities, and a fenced tot lot just for ages 2-5! A new playground is underway at Potts Park. The playground at Potts was the district’s oldest,so it was time for a change. In addition to a playground, Potts Park received a resurfaced and painted basketball court, new asphalt, and a new pathway. More fun is scheduled for this park in spring 2018. Serving You... The Lan-Oak Park District Board of Commissioners James Long, John Kelly, Patrick Gulotta, Robert Tropp Van Laten Park debuted a new, theme playground and a new Story Walk feature that encourages kids to get outside, get fit, and read - all in one visit, one really fun experience. Game, set, match at newly renovated tennis courts at Rotary Park. Two beautifully painted courts, along with a new fence and new parking lot await novice and experienced tennis players. Have fun! Rotary Park also received new shelter floors, a resurfaced walking path, and resurfaced basketball courts.

Ages 8 & Up, please Friday, October 27 6:30-9:00pm Eisenhower Center, 2550 178th Street, Lansing Fitness Center Receives Much Needed Improvement... and A New Fitness Amenity The Eisenhower Fitness Center is proud of its 25-yard, indoor lap pool. It is the pool that sets Eisenhower Fitness apart from other fitness centers in the area. The indoor pool shares its location in the fitness center with a cedar sauna (new in 2016) and a 1200-gallon, co-ed whirpool. This summer the entire pool area received an update when the pool and whirlpool were drained, and the pool, whirlpool, deck, walls and ceiling were isolated, sandblasted, patched, repaired, and freshly painted. This project took more than a month and cost $74,000 - paid for with current funds causing no increase in fitness membership fees. The new pool area looks brand newI Fitness Members and walk-in visitors are enjoying this updated facility along with the comfy new deck furniture. One level above the indoor pool is the fitness center main floor. The fitness center is well appointed with equipment from Cybex, Life Fitness, Precor, Hammer Strength, and Sci-Fit. Arriving in August was a new piece of equipment - a Gym Rax Functional Trainer System. The Gym Rax offers a dip station, pull up station, two TRX units, foam rollers, resist-a-balls, bosu trainers, flat exercise bands, exercise tubing, exercise mats, medicine balls, a battle rope, and a plyometric platform. The Gym Rax maximizes space and fucntionality, while offering our members a wide variety of new exercise experiences. Complementing the new Gym Rax, are two new wall-mounted speed bags. January is around the corner! Eisenhower Fitness Center offers the best deal in the area every January the Buy One Get One Free Fitness Membership Special. At the Ike The Eisenhower Center is a busy place! The park distrct is proud to maintain this nearly 60,000 square foot community center for the enjoyment of all Lansing residents and their friends. The Eisenhower Center is full service for all ages - from the baby room to the educational preschool to the two-court gymnasium to the fitness center - it has some- thing for everyone - INCLUDING SENIORS!! The Eisenhower Center is your one-stop senior center for lots of senior activities! It’s More Than Just Bingo! Lan-Oak Park District reminds seniors to sign up NOW for upcoming senior activities Staying connected, staying active, staying safe and staying healthy are all important goals for today’s seniors. Park districts play an important part in helping seniors achieve these goals by offering a wide variety of activities suited just for seniors that enable them to have fun, get fit, learn something new and socialize with their neighbors and peers. The park district in Lansing is no different as it offers many different opportunities for seniors. Check it out and pick your fun! All of the activities listed below are located at the Lan-Oak Park District community center, the Eisenhower Center, at 2550 178th Street in Lansing. Thornton Township Senior Luncheon - Held at the Eisenhower Center, this luncheon program is designed to provide a place to meet new friends in a social setting, eat a nourishing meal and to keep you informed of current information effecting seniors. Seniors must be residents of Thornton Township to participate Every Tuesday. Time: 11:30am Fee: $1.50 Eisenhower Seniors BINGO – Every Monday and Friday could be your lucky days! The Eisenhower seniors number about 25, offering a small, familiar group. They welcome new members and gather on Mondays and Fridays for bingo, visiting, snacks and a bunch of fun Bingo starts calling at 12:15 pm, takes a break from 1:30-2:00pm, resumes calling and ends at 4:00pm. There is no fee except for your cards. Rules of the Road for Seniors – Three times each year the park district invites a representative from the Illinois Secretary of State’s office to help seniors prepare to take their driving test. The workshop is free and lasts two hours. Call the park district for upcoming dates. Lansing Golden K’s Kiwanis – This community group is looking for retired men and women who have a desire to get out of the house, have a cup of coffee and a donut, visit with a few new friends, and volunteer for services of your choice. The Kiwanis group reads to school children, assists with Salvation Army collection, aids families coping with special needs, creates gift packs for veteran’s, and assists in a variety of food-providing charities. Attend a meeting every Wednesday afternoon at 1:30pm.at the Eisenhower Center. Get Out and Walk – The Eisenhower Center has an indoor gymnasium that offers a walking path for Lansing residents – thirteen times around is a mile. Grab a friend and take a walk for free! Silver Sneakers Fitness Membership – The Eisenhower Fitness Center offers free fitness memberships for seniors that qualify for the Silver Sneakers program. Eisenhower Fitness Center is a full service fitness center with a 25-yard lap pool for swimming and walking, a sauna, a whirlpool, two steam rooms, and a relaxing outdoor patio. To see if you qualify for a free fitness membership, please call 1-888423-4632 or check online at silversneakers.com. The Silver Sneakers membership allows its members two free fitness classes each week. Discounted Senior Fitness Memberships – Seniors that do not qualify for Silver Sneakers can still enjoy a fitness membership at a substantial savings – about a $100 OFF depending on the membership category you choose! ZOOOMERS – This exciting program, sponsored by Lan-Oak Park District – is just for seniors 62 & older and offers an activity a day – cooking, crafts, sports, game show fun, holiday parties, fitness classes, movies, swimming, tap, archery, senior beats, theme parties, and day trips. Pay one fee of $15 per season (three seasons per year) and your activities are free after that one time, seasonal fee. ZOOOMERS receive monthly calendars of events and may sign up for activities of their choice – all or just a few. Trips cost just $5. New ZOOOMERS receive a ZOOOMER t-shirt and a pedometer FREE. Fitness Classes Designed Just For Seniors – Each season the park district offers fitness opportunities that address the needs of seniors. Enjoy Aqua Arthritis, Zumba Gold, Tai Chi (for arthritis), and Lose the Mat Yoga. These program are six weeks in length and meet once per week. A program fee is required. Flu Shot Clinics - Every fall, flu shots are provided at the Eisenhower Center. Bring your insurance information and avoid the line at other locations. This year the park district welcomes Walgreens for our flu shots on October 17 and November 14 at 12:30pm.

Youth Programs Offer Fitness, Skill, Discipline and So Much Fun School-age children are having a blast this season in a variety of park district classes. Kids are showing off their culinary skills in cooking classes, exercising their brains in science classes focusing on circuitry and robotics, gaining strength and coordination in gymnastics, learning teamwork and competing with friends in the upcoming basketball league, and getting fit in a fun way way with fitness classes designed specially for our younger patrons. The weather is turning - keep your kids busy this winter. Youth Basketball is for ages 3rd-5th grade and 6th-8th grade. This program includes two practices each week with Sunday being game day. More than 100 kids sign up for this league that offers <<<--------- competition, skills enhancement and just plain fun! Robotics and Simply Circuits are challenging and wowing kids this season. Plan it, study it, build it, and make it work! -------->>>> Gymnastics offers kids discipline, flexibility, ambition, fitness, coordination, balance and excitement. Our gymnastics program will compete with any other with its gymnastics gym, gymnastics equipment, and <<<<-------------------- superior training. Kid’s fitness offers two choice - in the water for Aqua Blast and on the floor with POUND. Both of these classes allow kids to get fit with friends, while enjoying upbeat music and a full body workout. --------->>>>> Something smells yummy in the kitchen! Cooking classes for kids have always been popular at the park district. Cooking 101 and A Bit of Baking teach kitchen safety, measurement, organization, and the pride of producing something that everyone will enjoy. Get your apron! -------->>>>> Does your child have an interest in music? Our Private Piano and Private Guitar lessons attract kids each season. We supply the piano and the teacher, kids supply the talent. Electric and acoustic guitar lessons are available. All of these programs and many more are offered. Get with the program this season! The Lan-Oak Park District and the Village of Lansing are two separate entities. The village is governed by seven elected officials and the park district is governed by five different elected officials. Your tax bills list the park district and the village separately and seprarate taxes are allocated to each. Independent park districts are created through a vote of the people in order to assure that open space, parks, and recreation remain a high priority in their community. Illinois has more independent park districts than any other state. Break out the stroller and scoop up the baby for our new mommy/baby fitness classes!
