School Phone (847)998-5030 ! School Nurse Phone (847)657-2394 School Fax (847)998-5101 Glen Grove Continues to Be Green At Glen Grove School we continue to take steps to improve our environment. One way to do this is to reduce the number of paper copies that we make. Production of the Glen Grove newsletter is one way to do this. We have made it a goal to upgrade our online access to materials. This program not only saves trees and money, but will give families full color access to the many great photos and graphics within the newsletter. The newsletter will be available on our website at: http://gg.glenview34.org. When newsletters are posted we will send out notification e-mails. Access to the newsletter will be directly from the Glen Grove website. We will, of course, distribute printed copies of our newsletters to those families who cannot access the website and/or request copies. Below please find a request to receive a paper copy in this newsletter. at Glen Grove
PARADE - At 12:55 PM, after returning from Pumpkin Caroling at the Abington Senior Center, our 4th graders will lead our school in the annual Costume Parade. We will exit the back doors of Glen Grove, snake around the grassy area behind the school and re-enter our building through the gym doors. Parents are welcome to attend the parade. If you would like to be a spectator, please position yourself on the fields behind our school. If it is raining on Halloween, the parade will be cancelled. Students will participate in a small, modified version of the parade in our gym for students ONLY, as it would be a very serious breech of fire department safety regulations if we were to have our entire student body and all of our guests in our gym at one time. CLASSROOM PARTIES: The wonderful room parents of the Westbrook/Glen Grove PTA are busy eliciting volunteers to help organize the classroom Halloween parties. Please note the following: In light of increased attention to security and in alignment with all the other District 34 schools, we are asking that there is a maximum of eight room parents/volunteers who will attend classroom parties. We very much appreciate the room parents who plan these parties and organize the volunteers, and all of us want to ensure that our classrooms are not overcrowded and that the adults present are there to assist with activities and supervision. Please look for a communication from your room parent team regarding our Halloween parties in the near future, and be sure to sign up to assist with one of the fun activities that the room parents have planned. If you have not received a communication from your room parents, please feel free to reach out to your room parent team and express your desire to volunteer. Finally, please note that to ensure the same level of safety on a party day that we expect in our schools every day of the year, we are asking that all adults who enter the building sign in through the front office and obtain a sticker identifying them as a volunteer. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN - If your family does NOT celebrate Halloween, we want to encourage you to please send your child to school that day. All children will spend the morning engaged in typical learning activities followed by lunch. After lunch, students who do not celebrate Halloween will attend the Fall Festival in our Learning Center, where Mrs. Berichon, our drama teacher, will have activities planned that focus on the season of autumn with its emphasis on harvest and giving thanks. Please let us know if your child will be attending the Fall Festival by completing the form below and returning it to school with your child.

School Phone (847)998-5030 ! School Nurse Phone (847)657-2394 School Fax (847)998-5101 Starting Time is 7:55 a.m. That means that the buses will arrive at school, for the most part, by 7:45 at which time the bells ring and students will enter their classes. Morning announcements are made daily at this time about events during the day, etc. It is very important for students to be on time to facilitate the start of the day with the knowledge and information to be successful. __________________________________________ Dismissal Arrangements
If you need to change the after school pick-up arrangements for your child, please call our office before 2:00 PM to inform us of the changes. There is a lot going on in a school office both at the beginning and the end of school day. By calling before 2:00 PM, you are giving the front office staff the time needed to locate classroom teachers and communicate the message regarding the pickup arrangements for your child in a timely manner. ______________________________________________
 Morning Arrival Procedures
Walkers coming from the walking path west of the school must follow the path around the back of the building to the playground area when arriving prior to 7:45 a.m. Walkers arriving from the neighborhoods to the east should proceed directly to the playground using the paths on the east side of the building, and walkers should use the pathways on the west side of the building. Bike riders must dismount their bicycles once reaching school grounds and walk their bicycles to the racks either in front of or behind the building to be secured in the bike racks closest to their route home. Classes begin at 7:55 a.m. at Glen Grove. Students may not arrive at school prior to 7:35 a.m. There is no supervision before this time. At 7:35 a.m. Glen Grove Staff will supervise children on the playground. Children should be dressed appropriately to be outside if the wind chill is above 0° F. Starting time at all intermediate schools is 7:55 a.m. ___________________________________________
 Car Pick-Up Information
If you are picking your student up in the car pickup lane, please remain in your vehicle until your child joins you in your car. This lane is a designated pick-up/dropoff zone NOT to be used for long or short-term parking. Consistently adhering to procedures for dropping-off and picking-up children will help us meet our goal of providing the safest most efficient environment during those very busy dismissal and arrival times. ___________________________________________ From the Nurses Office
Students requiring any medications during school hours must file a medication form with the health office. This form requires a physician’s signature as well as a parent’s signature. This form can be found under the Parents Tab on the district website in the health and wellness file. All medication brought to school must be in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. This also includes over-thecounter medicine such as Tylenol, Advil, Cough Drops, etc.

Just a reminder....if your child is out sick with a fever or vomiting please make sure they do not return to school until they are fever free or symptom free for 24 hours. If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students. All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:55 a.m. at (847) 657-2394! The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time. _____________________________________________
District 34 Visitor Procedures Please remember the district has implemented the new visitor management procedures at all of its buildings. All visitors will need to be properly identified before entering the front office at all schools.

Once you have entered the front office, your drivers license or state I.D. will be run through our Raptor System and you will be given a visitor lanyard to wear throughout your time in the building. Your ID will be held by the front office until you have returned the lanyard and you are ready exit the building. This is to ensure all visitors are accounted for in the event of an emergency. ___________________________________________ Page 9

We are always looking for ways to improve communication and to increase engagement with our parent community, so we have launched a Twitter account. Visitors & Security System We welcome any parents who would like to visit our school and we ask that you: •Please call your child’s teacher to arrange an appointment if you want to visit a classroom. •Sign in at the office so that we know you are in the building. We ask that you wear a visitor lanyard when visiting. Please sign out and return the lanyard when leaving the building. •If you plan to take your child out of the building during school hours, please sign him/her out in the office. •We invite you to eat lunch with your child at school. Please call ahead of time to make arrangements with your child’s teacher. •All visitors (including parents) will be asked to present valid state issued identification (drivers license or state i.d.) that will be entered into the system before gaining access to the school beyond the main office. _____________________________________________
Illinois Text Messaging and Cell Phone Laws In school zones, it is a statewide law that unless the vehicle is parked in a parking space, or a handsfree device is used, drivers may not operate cell phones. This applies to buses as well as any other vehicles operating within the school zone. Fines for violation of Illinois cell phone law start at $75. Illinois’s cell phone and texting laws are considered “primary” laws. A primary law means that an officer can pull you over for the offense without having to witness some other violation. PLEASE DO NOT TALK OR TEXT IN THE GLEN GROVE SCHOOL ZONE. IT IS FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS. Outdoor Recess Procedures The benefits of an outdoor recess are many and Glen Grove makes every effort to see that all of our students go outdoors every day. Children are able to exercise, socialize and experience a variety of activities with friends and this all helps to enhance their learning experience. Starting the afternoon after a time of fresh air definitely improves learning, alertness and overall productivity. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be ten or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. Please note that children must wear coats if temperatures are below 32°F. We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess, generally because of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess, a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure. _____________________________________________ Parent-Teacher Association…. The Westbrook/Glen Grove Parent Teacher Association is a very active group of volunteers, whose service is essential to the success of the schools. In addition to providing ongoing support to school improvement efforts, the PTA sponsors school assemblies, Ice Cream Socials, book fairs, and many other worth while events. All parents are urged to take an active role in this organization. Meetings will be held at Glen Grove School from 9:15 - 10:45 on the following dates: November 15, December 20, January 24, February 21 (This is an evening meeting at Glen Grove from 6:30pm 8:30pm), March 21, April 18, May 16. _____________________________________________ Checkout all the happenings around the Glen Grove community by following our hashtags: #glengroverocks #WBGGPTA #WeAreD34 Page 10
