CURRICULUM REVIEW AND EVALUATION Curriculum study and writing is a continuous improvement process. Each curriculum document is reviewed and revised on an annual basis and an in-depth revision is completed on a five year cycle. The content and format for the curriculum documents are clearly established to meet the guidelines established by the Missouri School Improvement Plan. A review and evaluation of curriculum takes place each year, for four year, after the step 1 year of in-depth study and revision. These reviews are informal, with small changes being made to the document based on data analysis and feedback from teachers, administration and the Curriculum Committee. Beginning with the 2007-2008 school year, the review and evaluation procedure was expanded to include the following: 1. To insure continuous improvement, goals are set annually by vertical teams in each content area. The vertical team is responsible for obtaining feedback from the staff, students, principals, and parents about the effectiveness of the curriculum. 2. The director of curriculum and instruction and the vertical teams analyze student data annually to assist with the evaluation of the curriculum and set goals. Changes may be made annually as a result of this process. 3. Any changes to the curriculum as a result of the above processes are compiled and presented to the building administrators and followed up by a memo documenting the changes. The changes are presented to the Curriculum Committee and the Board of Education annually. 4. A report is presented to the Board of Education each year that lists the findings from the evaluation procedure. 3

CURRICULUM PROGRAM EVALUATION The purpose of curriculum program evaluation is to determine the effectiveness of curriculum – what is working, what is not working, what to change, and what to keep. Evaluation is a process used to assess the quality of curriculum. In addition to analyzing student assessment data, the vertical curriculum teams will respond to these four interrelated questions: 1. Is the curriculum design one of quality? 2. Is the curriculum being implemented as designed? 3. Are students mastering the core conceptual objectives and performing at a high level on the application level assessments identified in the implemented curriculum? 4. Is the curriculum effective in accomplishing the overall goals, mission, and vision of our district? Evaluation will also occur as a result of the review and the degree to which the goals set annually in each content area is accomplished. A systematic approach to curriculum evaluation can result in better alignment among the district’s written, taught, and tested curriculum. The data and information gathered through the new, comprehensive evaluation procedure can also be used to make improvements in instruction, assessment, and staff development. 4

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT Curriculum development within the Kennett #39 School District is a systematic, step-wise process that engages vertical, content-specific teams. Curriculum review, revision and development are led by the district director of curriculum and instruction. STEP 1 The director of curriculum and instruction leads the vertical team in the revision and update of the curriculum document. The Step 1 year includes a review of the current document, feedback from the vertical team members regarding needed revisions, analysis of the documents, analysis of student data, analysis of documents from other school districts, overview of the needed structure for the documents and the writing of the new documents. The curriculum development process includes receiving feedback from the Curriculum Committee and concludes with the adoption of the curriculum by the Board of Education. STEP 2 The curriculum process includes implementing the curriculum and reviewing instructional materials for possible adoption. Step 2 includes the adoption of new instructional materials by the Curriculum Committee or the decision of the Curriculum Committee to continue with the existing materials. Adoption of instructional materials by the Board of Education completes Step 2. STEP 3 Implement the new textbooks and other instructional materials in the classroom and monitor the curriculum. Review and monitor the curriculum. STEP 4 STEP 5 Review and monitor the curriculum. Preparation for Step 1 year begins. 5

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS EVALUATION A five-year cycle is utilized for the evaluation of instructional materials. At the beginning of the year a PK-12 team is formed. The Curriculum Director orders sample materials from the publishing companies in October. The entire department and elementary staff have the opportunity to preview the materials. Each teacher is asked to fill our a form for each textbook previewed, rating the textbook for durability, visual appeal, appropriate reading level, accuracy of information presented, alignment with the GLEs/CLEs, Show-Me Standards, and our local curriculum objectives, assessments, racial/ethnic equity, disability awareness, use of technology, research information skills, inclusion of workplace readiness skills, and teacher resources. It may be decided by the members of the core area curriculum team to postpone the adoption of new materials or continue the adoption process. The top scoring textbook vendors are asked to present their materials to the staff and submit a cost estimate. After the presentations, the core area curriculum team members vote to select the textbook / instructional materials. The top choice is presented to the Curriculum Committee, which is comprised of teachers, administrators, students, parents, and community members, for approval. Once approved by the Curriculum Committee, the selected textbook(s) and instructional materials are submitted to the Board of Education for final approval. Textbooks for a particular curricular / content area are ordered Kindergarten through twelfth grade. While continuity and transition are of primary consideration, elementary and secondary teachers may elect to adopt texts and instructional materials from different sources to meet the learning styles and educational needs of their respective students. 7
