by drawing a comprehensive list of colleges by using the secondary data sources such as the internet published reports and the aiu handbook then the experts in each city give their opinion on a structured questionnaire and this determines the weightage for reputation of colleges quality of academic input student care infrastructure and job prospects the experts were then asked to rate the colleges in their city for arts science commerce and in their respective zones north south east and west for engineering medicine and law to eliminate bias they were not allowed to rate their own college the overall perceptual score of a college was calculated on the basis of the rating given by experts on the above mentioned five criteria weighted by their importance this way the list of the colleges to be evaluated on the national level was obtained a different panel of experts were asked to rate the colleges in their respective streams this time with a national perspective this way the ragging to be honest but there was not even once that i experienced ragging in any form the seniors were rather friendly and helpful they make dtu a fresher-friendly university the freshers should rest assured that ragging at dtu is out of question ragging at educational institutions is totally against the law now as it has been banned by the supreme court of india as per the orders of the supreme court serious action will take place against those who indulge in any kind of ragging activities the recommendations of the committee constituted have been adopted by the university grant commission and steps have been taken so that seniors take these rules very seriously each and every senior has to sign an anti-ragging affidavit which entitles them to severe punishment if they are found guilty of participating in any acts of ragging professors and hostel-wardens are always alert and vigilant in keeping a check at ragging if any student feels that he/she is being ragged he/she should immediately contact any of the teachers and strict action would be taken against those indulging in ragging for this purpose a few of the professors are designated specially to deal with ragging the absolute anti-ragging policy at dtu makes the environment fresher-friendly and helps the new admissions in settling in quickly dtu celebrates its success on the 3rd foundation day dtu alumni speak `regularity was the biggest reason behind my success every year dce/dtu yields quality engineers subsequently adding to the pool of distinguished alumni it can boast of and prannay vats is one such alumnus who has done the college proud by topping the fms entrance last year mr vats who is currently in his second year in fms which is one of the top b-schools of india was kind enough to spare some time from his demanding schedule and answer a few questions for us 6 www.dtutimes.org 15th edition an interview with prannay vats dtu alumni fms topper above all enjoy life i will time is a always remember the time luxury at spent in dce fms and 2 what is the most sometimes significant change that i miss the has happened to you post dce/dtu apart from carefree times of fms hmm i guess it would be engineering my schedule the amount of time you can get in an engineering college now seems a luxury i did not make enough use of time is a luxury at fms and sometimes i miss the carefree times of engineering 3 amidst a life so full of competitions and stresses what s your mantra for success i guess regularity was the biggest reason behind my success especially during mba preparations and for placements too the biggest and the most difficult mantra to maintain would be regularity if you re regular in reading your study materials solving problems or in attending classes and listening to the teacher this mantra shall automatically give you success 4 do you think there s more to the purview of engineering than simply technical knowhow yes of course engineering is not only technical knowhow engineering is about the ability to think outside the box engineering and yet have analytical skills it s about the is about the ability to innovate and ability to the ability to modify and think outside improve if engineering the box and yet was only about technical have analytical knowhow all engineers skills it s about would have gone ahead the ability to doing masters and land innovate and the up in technical jobs but clearly that s not the case ability to today an engineering modify and mba degree combo is 1 how would you describe the four years of your college-life my four years in dce were absolutely awesome i still remember the first time i came to college in one of those rundown rtvs and was accosted by some seniors who wanted my intro and well that was the start of an amazing journey i enjoyed my time in dce as much in the class as outside it through dce i was able to participate in a national event and win it make friends and the most sought after in the industry because an engineer possesses the skills required by all sorts of industries not merely the technical ones 5 quite stereotypical this may sound but we d like to know about your future plans i haven t thought about it much yet but i am keen on entering the consultancy field i shall try to land up in a good consultancy firm from my b-school and i am working towards it 6 do you have any message for the students esp the freshers my message would be that through dtu you guys have got a great head start you guys shall realize the brand equity our college shares in the outside world the trick now is to capitalize on it work hard and yeah finally enjoy life this time shall never come back time for some rapid fire · · · · if not an engineer you d be a doctor your 15th edition india at 64 s ince independence day is around the corner the subject of the musings to follow is not hard to guess but contrary to what half of you will be expecting this article is not about glorifying the freedom struggle or eulogizing the tremendous achievements that india has made neither is editorial www.dtutimes.org 7 who is responsible for the present path of nation building before you blame the politicians for all the wrongs that have been befalling us think over this at the position where india was left at the time of independence we have come a long way and risen to a level where we are considered a threat to the superpowers of the world some of them are rotten the important conclusion to draw here is to focus on the present the past good or bad is a closed chapter it is the present which will determine the future and urgent steps need to be taken to make the present brighter and this about demeaning the politicians or ranting against corruption extortion embezzlement etc here i won t talk about the dubious past or the hazy future the only thing that matters most here and elsewhere is the present this 15th of august india will turn 64 in comparison to some democracies of the world like france and the usa indian independence is relatively young but 64 is not so insignificant a figure so as to be completely overlooked and forgiven for incompetence 64 years ago the british left india at a stage where it was completely strapped off of its wealth with an uncertain future and only the power of human and natural resources to depend on india set off on the difficult had it not been for the government for the people who run the government would all this have been possible many free countries are struggling and unstable even to this day where we were in 1947 and where we are in 2011 is no mean feat but before you start thinking that i m dwelling on the past or praising the politicians i might make it clear that i do not believe that india has developed a lot and i am not biased towards the politicians it is true that india has had its share of downfalls scams corruption violence injustice etc but which part of the world has been left untouched by these also it is true that certain politicians have brought shame to governance and the country but can you give up all the apples just because better we firstly have to stop generalizing we cannot blame the politicians for each and every ill that plagues the country it is true that they are no saints but then all of them are not villians either we have to stop being cynics we have to take responsible decisions while electing our representatives one cannot just shirk off his responsibility saying i hate politics and then go about blaming the whole government and its actors for everything that is wrong with india so 64 years later let s be more responsible in our decisions and more accountable in our actions let us focus on building a better present and the future will automatically be taken care of.

8 the myriad hues of independence freedom cum independence www.dtutimes.org 15th edition i by anand vardhan ndia won independence long ago that is if sixty four years is long enough for you france made it one hundred and fifty five years earlier than india but obviously that shouldn t exude a premature conclusion the monarchy state of the revolution resources and environments were satisfyingly dissimilar and france held its own colonial possessions till the 1960 s india is not known to indulge in such endeavours in the first place yet however the comparison is made to soften rigid beliefs about freedom what exactly does freedom mean the conquests of ruling people date back to the very beginning of history all powerful men have ruled the less powerful ones-following a deduced form of darwinism and inherent natural hierarchy the deer have always been afraid of the lions the lions in the ancient medieval and modern times henceforth forged their dreams of profitable enslavement some in less and some in more complete forms so freedom is but a repercussion of an entirely natural instinct it s rather a stimulus that must surface in events of breach of free will that however doesn t justify the enslavement and colonialisation in the form the world witnessed market capital and human labour were once counted the as same-in terms of profits they could hatch profitable human labour is today s human resource according to me majority of the eastern world fell into powerful hands people were made to work in inhuman conditions beaten raped their produce was snatched nations were robbed off their heritage and soul thus was born the concept of independencegoing along all on your own perhaps not really a synonym of freedom not natural born out of malice of boundaries that never were of `superior and `inferior ethnic races and cultures independence meant creating your very own set of rules using your own produce and taking care of all that s yours unfortunately as a negative outcome we took care of only our things in due course of time extreme patriotism came to be known as fundamentalism we know enough about the freedom struggle or more accurately the independence struggle wherein our people managed to finally dethrone the british colonial empire what happened after we were independent-all on our own there were riots mocking the very unity that made us independent people moved across another border we created in trains and buses and on foot amidst gunfire running from their own land returning to their own again the country witnessed a major famine independence came with a big cost we have progressed and are developing it s not intelligent to list our achievements they ve been repeated often enough i would rather talk about things that are less talked about the concept of free trade i.e globalization threw open the world markets it however slowly rolled in the belief that it was but another form of primitive capitalism which led to the growth of the leftist ideologies in our free country even in this independent india there are severe problems within whatever way it appears it s the industries that run a country they need raw material raw materials need resources and forests forest needs means displacement of tribal people that means revolution amounts to maoism this is one of the many problems that is eating the country from within dr manmohan singh quotes it as the biggest internal security threat we are still looking for freedom within independence that somehow convinces me that independence has eroded the freedom we so naturally possessed also there still is widespread unemployment and corruption in india avoiding a deep shade of pessimism though i do believe that things have moved in these years but at the clichéd `grass root level things move much less rapidly than at the planning level we as educated individuals must share a responsibility we brought in the very concept of independence and so we must live it we must make sure that freedom is not affected due to an independent attitude rather than running a race we must place each brick carefully what that really means is for us to decide france has had much more time you see in that much time of an independent india we sure could build a freer india dawn at a clouded horizon by utkrisht prasoon at the stroke of the midnight hour as the world sleeps india will awake to life and freedom these were the words which cracked open a new day which had long been awaited our nation had been a place where people had been repressed and buoyed down by oppression for more than just a period of 200 years stretching even years before that when even our rulers believed that the case of the general public belonged to a lesser contrast in their scheme of things the wait was not for independence but for an identity which would define us india had long lost its grandeur and greatness all rusted away by the passage of time it was well known then as it is today that we had been great but greatness which would justify our unique struggle which would justify the lives of our heroes and which could be seen by the eyes of the present had eluded our sights but this day did arrive even though the hidden truth was the loss of britain and a change in its power with its own rays of hope striking joy across millions of heartsa hope that guides us to this very day was this the first half truth blinding our eyes to violence as it does today in blinding us to corrupt realities or was it an event which gave us a new spirit to be nurtured a spirit which can take a nation of more then a billion today from darkness to new light we will never know what we do know are wicked truths and incomprehensible new signs of change after 65 years what is of concern are not `problems they have been present in several forms in a place which has been inhabited by more than a billion people with delayed modernization in every field you cannot simply begin to expect all the `problems to simply disappear the `problems would be present always what is of concern is the dearth of solutions and the lack of a developed scientific realization of the same in all the true sense of the word the actual identity of our country as a whole is still hidden it has only been renamed deformed and at some times reflected it has never been retrieved we have long lost track of this in a fierce race to match up with a culture that mesmerizes us and we are leaving nothing unturned to replicate it at all levels possible a nation cannot proclaim change by showing calculated figures as statistics hardly ever show the real deal independence for india has been no less than a pandora s box you cannot simply slice through this box to understand independence you will have to open it the country which turns 64 on the coming 15th of august remains a place where our true potential which will identify us has largely been kept untapped as we collectively come to agree that the phase of modernization of india has finally come to pass we have to remember that part which has remained at the same place every year the irony remains that even to this day this other india actually happens to be the true india it cannot change in a day or a month or a year or a decade or even in fifty years it will take time for nurturing of its soul which has long been chained by exploitation poverty inequality etc india was never simply a group of states bound together by a singular constitution or a rule of law it was and is a kaleidoscope of cultures colours feelings and talent the unlimited possibilities which could be viewed in it have long been kept limited by our own intellect as our new `techno based well connected and economically aware generation will begin to settle new chances and choices will lie ahead of us it is in this that we unknowingly impact our own society and our nation as a whole whether we will be willing to stand up to that which continues to mar our india when we are equipped with a new sense of the world will only be learned when the curtains are pulled and our chance comes but there is one truth which stirs our spirits today a new independent minded nation has arrived and it has the chance to embark a new dawn on our darkly dazzling nation.

made me wonder in a country where cricket is a religion and sachin is god why will people leave an anticipated century by sachin tendulkar for a fest dedicated to indian music and dance to my surprise it was not the case and the fest did turn out to be a success which reveals how every citizen of this country is an indian in every sphere and not just cricket for more information please contact research and then discuss and deliberate on those issues and find solutions what is the purpose the purpose is very simple awareness for those to whom united nations is only a concept that came into existence after the world war ii for those who believe that the responsibility of this country and this world lies with the officials sitting in air conditioned offices for those who believe that why care about the future when they live in the present for those who know that one should not give money to an 8 year old girl on the red light but fail to acknowledge this part of the world mun is an eye opener what do i learn it teaches one to speak one s mind without the fear of sounding dumb it enables you to carry forward a discussion of an agenda like the darfur issue with a 100 odd students and most importantly it instigates in you great thinking and leadership qualities i sife dtu have been reading a lot of articles on the youth of today what exactly is the power of the youth of today i tried to answer this question of mine by my daily observance of people around it can be the effort of a manager in a mnc to dedicate his weekends to teach a group of children on the red light it can also be the willingness of students to spend their vacations as a volunteer in an ngo it can also be initiative of a group of student to implement a business plan for social benefit it can be a model to serve the purpose of providing basic sanitation requirement in small village by linking them to another group of people looking to employment opportunity this idea gave rise to an international concept of sife students in free enterprise which provides practical learning and competitive advantage to students on hand and helps the society to advance on the other hand the sife dtu chapter has been established with the similar view and ideology that we engineers also think beyond machines and languages no matter how many times you must have read the line by m.k.gandhi be the change you want to see however it still holds true contact 9650948313 the rotaract club dtu was formed with the aim of filling the social awareness vacuum in our campus it was our way of telling everyone that we engineers are not just a marvel at brains but also at heart rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business professional and community leaders members of rotary clubs known as rotarians provide humanitarian service encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world we are sure that i wish i could do something for them always 12 www.dtutimes.org innovate by kumar pratik 15th edition clap switch my tryst with innovation i have always believed that the answer to even the most complex question lies in the simplest of thoughts i was barely into my first year in college when i encountered the first of the events that helped me ratify my trust in the ideology it was the month of september and i was wandering casually alongside my friends in the college campus and noticed a sign board that said e-junkyard build a clap switch from junk and win exciting prizes just the way i had been ignorant to numerous other sign-boards like this one i waved it away and moved towards the cafeteria i slept the next couple of hours in the midst of lectures but somehow the thought of making a clap switch kept coming back to my mind again and again a number of stumbling blocks awaited patiently in my way to start with i did not have the wildest idea what a clap-switch really is a friend explained to me that on your first clap the light must glow and on your second clap it must become dull the next problem was that i had no clue how to make a circuit let alone build some complex design in my first semester itself it was then that i realized the lack of knowledge can in fact serve to one s advantage sometimes so i decided to think in the simplest way possible to think of a mechanical design that had nothing to do with either circuits or gadgetry after some thought it was obvious that i could only use the air pressure generated by a clap to somehow power up the led i considered all those items that could vibrate via air pressure thin metallic sheet tuning fork diaphragm like plastic rubber band basically anything and everything and yet neither of those items seemed feasible enough to come up with a practical design as fate would have it incidentally i along with a couple of friends had ventured to a nearby restaurant for dinner later that night and it was there that i noticed the `secret ingredient straws thin light weighed straws that moved at the slightest flutter of air we randomly picked up a few straws some balloons batteries wires and headed for our hostel four hours in and it became evident that our attempts to use a straw in the same vein as a pendulum was in fact a ridiculous idea and that we could never complete the project in time just when it seemed that it had all been a futile exercise my eyes fell on the couple of balloons and i out of sheer monotone half-filled them up our eyes lit up with hope the balloon responded ever so efficiently to our claps we had found the missing piece in the jig-saw and we set down to work again after we were through the clap-switch stood clumsily with two balloons attached to either sides of a straw hinged at the centre it was built on the following principle when a person claps near the right balloon in up to down motion from your view due to the air pressure the strawballoon system bends downwards to complete the circuit resulting in a glowing led to break the circuit one must clap in up to down motion beside the left balloon i carried it embarrassingly through the college lanes while people stared at the awkwardly designed project with amusement the lack of reliability in the project made for an entertaining viewing at the time of demonstration as i tried clap after clap to get the darned led to glow eventually our clap-switch went on to earn the applaud of the judges for its innovativeness and the simplicity of the design and we in turn went on to reach the second position in the e-junkyard competition in the latter stages and so i bragged on later yes we are the guys who made that balloon thingy the power of nanotubes by tarun chugh l et me tell you a story long time ago a scientist named gorden e moore one of the founders of intel gave a very interesting law which actually describes a long-term trend in the history of computer hardware it states that the number of transistors that can be placed extensively on an integrated circuit doubles in every 18 months clearly it accounts for more density of the ic and more number of components on the same area this also elucidates that in order to relentlessly follow moore s law we require smaller sized connecting units these units should have high conductivity and must be very miniscule as we cannot afford the conventional copper wires for connecting the components the answer to this problem can be carbon nanotubes carbon nanotubes cnts are allotropes of carbon with a cylindrical nanostructure nanotubes have been constructed with length-todiameter ratio of up to 132,000,000:1 significantly larger than any other material these cylindrical carbon molecules have novel properties making them potentially useful in many applications in nanotechnology electronics optics and other fields of materials science as well as potential uses in architectural fields they may also have applications in the construction of body armour they exhibit extraordinary strength and unique electrical properties and are efficient thermal conductors the structure of a nanotube can be understood by graphene sheet which is similar to graphite sheet a graphene sheet when rolled about its axis in form of a cylinder forms a tube like structure in which the electrons are free to move without any collisions thus making its conductivity very high the chemical bonding of nanotubes is composed entirely of sp2 bond similar to those of graphite these bonds which are stronger than the sp3 bonds found in alkanes provide nanotubes with their unique strength moreover nanotubes naturally align themselves into ropes held together by van der waals forces nanotubes are the next big thing in the electronics market with ceaseless number of applications like field emission cnt transistors protein crystallization and many more this is just the trailer cnt s are surely going to be a rage in future just wait and watch.

15th edition -needing someone is like needing a parachute if he isn t there the first time you need him chances are you won t be needing him again words of wisdom the white tiger fiction www.dtutimes.org his debut novel by arundhati roy is one of the best one would have ever come across it won the man booker prize in 1997 for its literary value.the glittering spot of the novel is undoubtedly its language roy uses such unconventional and eloquent ways of presenting things that you find yourself awed at every other line as a matter of fact she has `invented a few words this masterpiece sails along smoothly with its richness of content and subtle capture of human emotion some people believe that the novel is slightly autobiographical with roy being the girl rahel in the novel the novel is set in kerala with instances unmistakably derived from roy s own childhood the novel doesn t have a deep plot however and doesn t surprise you with sharp bends a must read for those who d love to admire the zenith of literary excellence this age has achieved the god of small things fiction 15 t he white tiger by aravinda adiga is a light-hearted easy going novel though it may seem a little too light it grabbed the man booker prize too the whole novel is in the form of a series of letters addressed to his excellency wen jiabao it brings out the growth or rather the making of an entrepreneur in india you need no great grey cells to understand it the language is simple and lucid.the humor is starkly original though at a few places it may appear clichéd the story is set in bihar and bangalore and stresses on the corporate bangalore life but it ll never appear technical in fact he has described his father s death with the same texture of humor in the novel.though a few critics suggest that the novel was inappropriate for the booker yet it stands as one of the good humorous novels we have seen for a long time my advice go read it t b efore i begin this review i owe an explanation about the author robert a heinlien you might have not heard of him but he is one of the best authors there is heinlien along with isaac asimov and arthur c clarke are considered the greatest science fiction writers of all time he along with asimov and clarke not just evolved ideas in science but in all spheres of life-politics religion education their books are some stranger in a strange land of the most widely read and most widely followed and they have helped shape generations stranger in a stranger land is one of the more fantastic books i have read yet it compels you to think differently and that for me is a good book any day the story follows the protagonist valentine michael smith or otherwise known as `the man from mars he is a man who was looked after by martians when his parents died on mars the book is about how he goes about transforming himself and others around him as he struggles to understand his own culture and idiosyncrasies sometimes associated with it the book on the face of it feels like your everyday sci-fi novel but under the superficial layer of a futuristic world liesthe real complexity of everyday life matters like politics religion god lifestyles all are handled superbly and decisively while the author puts his view in front of the reader by focusing on discussions between the `man from mars and other characters the author helps the reader understand the various facets in their true form the more i read the book the more i realized how simple and naïve our own methods are it truly requires a genius to figure out the every day and bring it to masses because we hardly give thought to actions that are as familiar to us as breathing to anyone interested in novels that enrich your mind to the nuances of this world i would suggest reading this book -shashank sharma a three friends decide to check into a hotel the cost of a room is 30 rs so they split it among themselves 10 rs each the hotel manager realizes that the cost was only rs 25 so he gives the servant 5 rs to return it to the friends the servant keeps 2 rs with himself and returns 1 rupee each to the three friends thus each friend paid 9 rs for the room totaling rs 27 the servant has 2 rs thus combined 29 rupees but the friends had deposited 30 rs at the start where is the missing rupee b there is a truth teller always tells the truth a liar always lies and one that sometimes answers truthfully and sometimes lies each man knows who is who you may ask three yes or no questions to determine who is who each time you ask a question it must only be directed
