about voices of the 603 unh manchester s a cappella group milling around presents an a cappella festival concert and educational clinics for new hampshire middle and high school students called voices of 603 it is our hope that by providing this opportunity to the choruses across the state the love for vocal music will flourish the day-long program provides opportunities for performance and networking between students teachers and schools our goals for voices of 603 are to · raise awareness of vocal and a cappella music in the state · provide support for the arts advocacy group nh citizens for the arts to further the arts in society · connect and showcase the talented musicians throughout the state · provide alternative ways to foster a lifelong passion in music without necessarily majoring in music the program consists of two segments the first part of the day was at the university of new hampshire at manchester located in manchester s historic millyard at the unh manchester campus we hosted clinics for the students and their teachers on the topics of beatboxing rehearsal techniques and stage presence rocking your solo recording techniques managing your group and developing your blend the second part of the program along with the students teachers and presenters moved to the beautiful currier museum of art for the remainder of the day at the currier the students are performing for this public concert where a 2011 voices of the 603 state champion will be crowned this concert is being emceed by wzid s heather bishop has many groups performing and is being recorded and live-streamed on our website we hope you enjoy the show www.voicesofthe603.com

voices of the 603 earlier today starting at 10am over 100 high school students their teachers and other teachers gathered at unh manchester the schools kingswood middle school keene middle school woodsville high school lisbon regional school and the ensembles no boys aloud and men who stare at notes winnacunnet high school chamber singers dover high school and bow high school as well as prospect mountain and manchester west learned from fantastic clinicians sean matthews charles marlowe jim mccann kara kelly-martin and the professional group overboard all presented clinics topics for today were rocking your solo emotion/arranging and how to translate that into a good recording managing your group listening then singing the basics of wood shedding developing your blend and warming up it s not just for gym class the importance of vocal health and the practice of syncing to your vocal partners this part of the day wrapped up around 3:30 when we started our trip over to the currier museum of art at 4pm we allowed the students to access the exhibits at the currier and the museum provided docents if students wanted a more in-depth tour at 5pm the currier closed to the public and another art form began to take shape over the summer we have had the privilege of working with some fantastic and creative individuals who are part of the nh citizens for the arts a statewide nonpartisan organization who advocates for public policy and funding support of the arts with a unique blend of music and art this festival is truly unique we are fortunate to be joined by windham high school and berlin high school for the remainder of the concert as well as fantastic groups from durham not too sharp nh notables maiden harmony and off the clef awesome barbershop groups melodies and memories and the granite statesmen are educating us as to our roots of modern a cappella and giving all performance groups something to aspire to is overboard a national recording artist from boston whose founder is from nashua page 3

special guests biographies heather bishop emcee wzid personality born and raised in upstate ny my husband brian and i moved out to nh over 10 years ago and we never want to move again we love it here we have a young son who is in grade school and loves music as much as his mom i commute every day to work so if you see a crazy woman on 93 singing at the top of her lungs in her car chances are good you have found me when i m not driving working or hanging out with the boys i m on the internet reading or watching tv i m addicted to hbo s rome can t wait till they make the movie showtime s the tudors grey s desperate housewives house and most reality shows right now i m really into true blood on hbo but i don t have hbo so don t tell me what is going on i want to be surprised when i watch my friend s dvr of it one of my coworkers once said that i am the queen of pop trivia if you ever need to know the name of a song or the artist chances are good i can help charles marlowe clinician proud and excited to return to the second annual voices of the 603 festival charles would like to take the opportunity to welcome back all the familiar faces from last year and extend a warm welcome to all of those making the trip this year charles graduated from the university of new hampshire in 2009 with a ba in political science and minors in sociology and business administration he is currently employed in electronics manufacturing but misses every minute of his college days especially a cappella since graduating while at unh charles auditioned and spent all four years with the all-male a cappella group not too sharp during his early days with nts charles was introduced to the art of vocal percussion and became one of the group s staple percussionists for years to come while he is well-aware that vocal percussion requires very little one-onone training he still takes pride in conveying the importance of vocal percussion and its completion to the sound of contemporary a cappella groups charles s and his fellow good lookin fellows work can be heard on two of not too sharp s most recent studio albums their self-titled album not too sharp from 2006 and on their 2009 release shifting gears but on a final note he is rather eagerly awaiting the projected december 2011 release of not too sharp s third studio album keep a look out for that but most importantly enjoy all the events planned for this year s voices of the 603 kara kelly-martin clinician kara is a 23 year old recent graduate of the university of new hampshiredurham where she received her bs in speech language pathology/deaf studies at unh she sang with and directed the all female a cappella group maiden harmony in the last few years her interest and influences within the a cappella world really expanded as she was exposed to talented groups like those at unh and in the boston/east coast regions before transferring to unh spring 2009 she attended wheaton college where she performed with their soul and r&b group voices united to jam recently kara has been involved with unh s a cappella radio station the voice box her love for music was fostered early by her dad a blues musician and she has learned a lot from musical friends family and mentors since her adoration for a cappella is seeded in knowing how endless the songs experiences and communities are within this style of music page 4 www.voicesofthe603.com

sean matthews clinician sean graduated from the university of new hampshire in 2011 finally getting his bachelors in philosophy after 5 not-long-enough years there he is an alumnus of the group not too sharp currently self-employed intensely interested in the a cappella world and aims at producing and recording a cappella music in the future in fact he currently helps to co-host the voice box on wunh an all a cappella radio show out of wunh durham 91.3 fm check them out at www.facebook.com/thevoicebox sean got into a cappella his first year at college having never sung before in an organized group his love of music goes far back into fourth grade when he got his first trumpet and he has been picking up instruments ever since he loves to try everything and is a self-proclaimed expert in nothing but loves entertaining people from on or off stage jamie saucier festival coordinator jamie got his love of music from his family through their encouragement his interest grew from a passion to a career a graduate of pinkerton academy jamie was involved in every possible performance group and that trend continued through his college years at unh durham jamie auditioned for an a cappella group his freshman year but unfortunately was not accepted he re-auditioned and earned a place on the co-ed group alabaster blue within two weeks he had coordinated an arrangement for the group to perform jamie continued with alabaster blue as their musical director for the next year the following year he started his own group not too sharp immediately successful its first year winning new student organization of the year and raising over $3,000 for the american cancer society and recording the group s first live album he established a new wave of a cappella at unh durham to date there have been forty-four members who have been nts alum upon graduation jamie went into teaching he ran the musicals taught chorus and general music at each school where he taught he later went on to ithaca college for his masters of music degree which he completed in july 2011 jamie has worked at unh manchester for the past five years establishing the department of student activities last year he was involved with over 230 events and meetings bringing more than 16,000 people to the college s campus one of those events was the first voices of the 603 competition in 2010 ­ the success of which we hope to duplicate this evening jim mccann clinician jim has only been a member in the a cappella world for about two years and oh what a great two years they ve been he started as a senior in high school where he discovered that he got chills every time he heard a tight harmony in a pop song or in his choir he was most drawn to those few songs which chose to implement the ever-epic composing device the a cappella breakdown including kyrie by mr mister and ground beneath my feet by sherwood when he joined unh-durham s not too sharp in his freshman year he knew he d found his kind of music since that fateful decision one year ago he s devoted himself to learning the most he could about contemporary and collegiate a cappella and he likes to think he s been a fast learner he has since arranged several songs some good some bad and this past summer he attended a cappella boot camp in skokie il hosted by freddie feldman vocomotion studios and dave brown mouth off podcast co-host where he had a crash course in producing and recording a cappella albums he is now in his sophomore year at unh and in not too sharp and he plans on having a cappella as a part of his life forever page 5

berlin high school shockapella directed by kristen bushway shockapella was formed in 2007 by a group of students that just loved to sing since that time the group has been invited to perform for the executive council of nh nh charitable foundation and syfy s ghost hunters last year the group toured the u.k performing in scotland england and ireland this year our singers have been invited to perform at carnegie hall in april with conductor jerry blackstone and you don t need to be rich or powerful to lift your voice in song or get out of your seat and shake your groove thing you don t need to be a van gogh to paint a picture or a maya angelou to write a poem you don t need a grammy or an oscar or an emmy to make your work on the cultural life of your community or your country a valuable one michelle obama in a 2009 speech in pittsburgh windham high high school soulfege a cappella directed by karen sayward soulfege a cappella was formed in 2009 when windham high school opened its doors for the first time it consists of a dedicated group of singers who rehearse early in the morning and are always welcoming new members during the holidays they have performed at many local businesses and several of them are looking forward to their first music trip to nyc in the spring soulfege a cappella enjoys performing all styles of music from renaissance to contemporary and would like to become more adventurous with their repertoire to include some cool arrangements with vocal percussion thank you for this great sharing opportunity page 6 www.voicesofthe603.com

prospect mountain high school ahwooh capella directed by jamie bolduc kevin cleary ahwooh capella is made up of members of the select chorus at prospect mountain high school the chorus is seven years in the making starting with only five singers two years ago at the music showcase festival at busch gardens va they won the grand sweepstakes award for choral performance this choir has had an interesting year as their director of many years has been out the entire first quarter on leave and they have had to prepare their pieces with an unfamiliar substitute they have worked extra hard in adjusting to a new conducting style and brought the best of both directors together in their music music as an art form is a pinnacle of human culture and achievement as such it does not need to justify its existence it should be learned and appreciated for its own sake perret 2004 173 manchester west high blue knight chamber choir directed by susan wilkes the west high school blue knight chamber choir is a sought after group in the manchester community and is made up of 19 auditioned members in grades 10 12 recently they sang at the 9-11 memorial 10th anniversary ceremony here in manchester they also sing at school events and concerts throughout the year several of the students participate in other musical groups at the school and in the community their music ranges from jazz contemporary world music to classical works of all periods last year they took home the first place trophy at the first voices of the 603 competition page 7

overboard www.overboardvocals.com about founded in the spring of 2006 by current director nicholas girard overboard is a male a cappella group from boston ma although overboard s repertoire consists primarily of contemporary pop/rock songs including covers from such artists as rascall flatts stevie wonder and the beatles the group remains true to its a cappella roots and continues to perform classic selections such as blue moon in the still of the night and stand by me first conceived as a street performance group intent on entertaining audiences around coastal new england during the summer months overboard has come a long way in a short time the group s first album shipwrecked was recorded in nick s living room and was released during that first summer shipwrecked was distributed during frequent busking stops in newburyport ma freeport me and burlington vt as well as around the group s hometown of boston overboard s strong musicianship energetic set and enthusiastic attitudes have made the group a popular act for audiences of all ages the winter of 2007 brought the group even greater success when the boys were selected as a top five finalist in the boyz ii men cbs early show a cappella quest competition recorded labor day weekend 2008 tidings is a holiday album with something for everyone full of classic carols and contemporary hits the group promoted tidings throughout the holiday season at malls bookstores and schools to enthusiastic audiences and record sales in april 2009 tidings received a contemporary a cappella recording award cara nomination for best holiday album and a track from the album a dance remix of we three kings won the award for best holiday song the spring of 2010 brought another round of nominations and awards as help was nominated for two caras and the group was nominated for eight a cappella community awards acas overboard is mr nick girard mr scott cobban mr jeff eames mr caleb whelden mr alfredo austin page 11
