the western weekender friday october 14 2011 news local 3 as the federal government considers aged care reform mental health and ageing minister mark butler visited st marys this week to get onthe-ground opinions ore than 30 local seniors met with federal minister for mental health and ageing mark butler and lindsay mp david bradbury in st marys on monday as part of a national conversation on healthy and positive ageing the views of local seniors will help inform the gillard government s response to the productivity commission s final report caring for older australians which recommends comprehensive reform at the st marys forum a registered nurse said the aged care system had been inadequately staffed since former prime minister john howard changed legislation in 1997 we ve worked for 13 years with really inadequate staffi ng numbers she said in 1997 we had about 10 high care residents now we have about 40 high care residents what it means for them is that they sit and wait longer mr butler acknowledged that staffi ng was an issue a number of parties to this inquiry argue that there should be clear mandatory staff ratios and others say it should be more flexible because residents profi le for facilities changes he said we have an open mind on this issue the registered nurse also spoke about aged care providers using money incorrectly which was a result of the changed legislation too i made $700 in raffle tickets to fi nd they decided to buy an air-conditioner for the kitchen she said the minister said providers used to get separate money for staffi ng and services but now it s a single bucket to distribute from there is no way we can be guaranteeing where the money is going so there is this m minister for mental health and ageing mark butler and lindsay mp david bradbury meet with local seniors [photo melinda jenkins structural challenge at the moment he said a retired teacher said she was concerned about the amount of funds going into the government s building education revolution stimulus rather than upgrading aged care facilities my 94-year-old sister is in a retirement home that is very old across the road there is a very wealthy private school which is having something built under the stimulus package she said why can t the government put some of that money into retirement homes but mr butler said the point of the education stimulus was to spread economic activity evenly across the country the aged care sector is not in need of major new rebuilds there are areas where there is no need he said another registered nurse brought up the issue of aged care facilities sprucing up just in time to be accredited staff are put on to pass and as soon as they get accredited staff get cut she said mr butler said the commission made several points about the accreditation system where providers bring in fresh flowers to impress how could we improved aged care give us your opinion by emailing penritheditorial@mediaview.com.au or fax 4731 6255 shop 3/552 high st penrith for appointments phone 4721 2727 spray tan 1hr relaxation facial lip and chin laser underarms laser $15 $49 $20 $19 full legs laser women s brazilian underarms mens chest stomach mens face sculpting $169 1024wwd5231 $54 $99 $35

4 opinion friday october 14 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk troy dodds of the boy s friends in the daily telegraph on tuesday destenee mcfarlane said from my point of view he shouldn t be kept over there he s way too young he has never been involved in this type of thing before and he defi nitely doesn t deserve what s happening to him now destenee is just 17-years-old with plenty of life ahead of her and pulling apart her comments is not my aim however i get the feeling that many people her age would say the same thing and share her thoughts troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au youth to big or small license no 202800c here are times in life you take a risk knowing what you are doing is wrong but keeping your fi ngers crossed that you don t get caught i am not talking about career criminals here or those who constantly show little or no respect for the law or other human beings i m talking about when somebody gets behind the wheel of a car after having that third beer uncertain whether or not they may be a tad over the limit i m talking about when somebody takes a phone call on their mobile phone while driving keeping their fi ngers crossed a police car doesn t happen to be on the same stretch of road or when somebody takes a drug perhaps as an experiment in their youth none of the above are smart things to do but most of us would know the consequences of doing them we know that if we are over the limit we may lose our licence or worse cause an accident we know that if we talk on the phone a big fi ne may be coming and we know that if we take drugs a slap on the wrist or depending on the day something a tad worse is coming despite his youth the 14-year-old boy who has been in the headlines this week after being arrested for drug possession in bali would have surely known the consequences of his actions cracking down on drugs is serious business in indonesia and there s ample warnings suggesting what may be coming if you do the wrong thing and while i think every australian agrees that the kid needs to be brought home an indonesian jail cell is no place for a 14-year-old boy to spend his childhood offering sympathy is another matter entirely i was interested in the comments by one cracking down on drugs is serious business in indonesia and there s ample warnings th is is where i somewhat differ in opinion the kid should certainly come home and she s right he shouldn t be kept over there but to say he doesn t deserve what s happening to him is just plain wrong if the allegations are correct the kid purchased drugs on the streets of indonesia such action is highly illegal very stupid and extremely dangerous drug possession is no minor issue in indonesia respect for the laws of the country you are in is paramount when travelling overseas if the allegations are true the 14year-old flouted this respect any 14-year-old who knowingly purchases drugs is smart enough to know that he or she is doing the wrong thing we can be sympathetic to the point where this is a young kid and we all do stupid things in our youth but one cannot cop the he doesn t deserve this line anyone who does the wrong thing no matter how minor it may be perceived deserves to face the consequences of their actions the hope is that in the long run they emerge a smarter person in the herald sun this week susie o brien rightly declared that the case of the 14-year-old should serve as a reminder to everyone about the respect we must have for the laws of other countries just because there are lots of aussies in another country and just because you can buy mcdonald s and drink vb doesn t make it any less foreign she said spot on th is is indeed a unique case and the political interference from the likes of julia gillard and kevin rudd hopefully for the right reasons is justified but we must not forget there are others facing even worse fates for similar crimes in the media hype surrounding this story very little has been said about 31year-old aussie graeme pollock pollock was arrested in bali last month he was there to celebrate his brother s wedding and was arrested in kuta with what police allege was 0.4 grams net of methamphetamine stories like this happen far more often than most of us probably think the mainstream media however rarely get involved at a high level unless it s an exceptional case like a teenager or a pretty girl clearly we need a stronger education program for people travelling to indonesia particularly given it appears pressure on the streets to purchase drugs or anything for that matter is exceptionally strong for many young people it is the fi rst overseas trip they will do without their parents it s a party destination and temptations are high let s hope the 14-year-old kid comes home let s also pill how many have heard of the pill the carbon permits that will be sold or issued to polluters will be considered as private property to repeal the tax would mean that the federal government would be obliged to compensate industry to the tune of billions of dollars tony is campaigning hard against the carbon tax because he knows that it is unpopular with the electorate and he wants to ride into the lodge on the coat tails of anti-carbon tax hysteria once comfortably situated as pm he will then have to confess to australians that his hands are tied as it would cost too much to repeal the tax the objects in front of me even if i did crash into a few of them tomorrow saturday october 15 marks the 90th anniversary of international white cane day and the team at guide dogs nsw are urging locals to think about how they would get around if they were visually impaired the long cane plays a critical role in providing safe agile foot travel as it detects objects and changing surfaces said dr graeme white ceo of guide dogs there are now different kinds of canes to suit each person s travel needs and over the past 10 years we ve seen increased demand for coloured canes with requests for
