OVERVIEW OF THE RUSSIAN FUEL AND ENERGY SECTOR Oil and gas sector The fuel and energy sector is an essential part of the Russian economic system and one of key factors ensuring the country’s activity. 1/4 of Russian industrial products are made in this sector. During 2000-2015 Russia’s share in the global oil production grew from 8.9% to 12.4%. Today, it is one of three countries influencing prices on the oil market (along with Saudi Arabia and the USA). Russia is a key supplier of oil and oil products to Europe which keeps increasing supplies to the Asia-Pacific Region. The fuel and energy sector comprises modern and innovative industries engaged in production and processing of fuel and energy resources (fuel-producing industries), electricity production, transportation and distribution of energy. Sub-sectors of the fuel and energy sector such as oil, gas, coal, shale, peat and energy industries, are closely related to all sectors of Russia’s economy. Since 2010 the oil production in Russia exceeded 500 mln tonnes per year and keeps growing steadily1. mln. tonnes 512 526 534 554 2010 2012 2014 2016 The main growth factors are development of existing promising fields and new ones in European North, Eastern Siberia and Far East; increase in operating wells by increasing development drilling and putting new wells into production; application of technologies and methods to stimulate oil production in both new promising regions and traditional producing regions of Russia (the Urals-Volga region). As at 1 January 2016, 299 companies produced oil and gas condensate (petroleum feedstock) and 257 companies produced natural gas and APG. Electric power industry2 According to the Russian Ministry of Energy, in 2016 electricity production in Russia amounted to 1071.7 billion kWh that is 2.1% more than in 2015. Power stations of Unified Energy System of Russia generated 1048.3 billion kWh that is 2.1% more than in 2015. Without regard to the extra day of the lean year electricity production of UES of Russia and throughout Russia increased by 1.8%. The Russian electric power industry is developing steadily. The total installed electric power capacity in Russia including isolated electricity stations as at 1 January 2017 amounted to 244.1 GW. In 2016 electricity production increased by 1.73% compared to 2015 and amounted to 1,071,290 million kWh. In 2017, to carry out investment programmes it is planned to bring into operation about 28,980 MVA transformer capacity and over 23,000 km of electrical networks. Expocentre AO in cooperation with the Russian Ministry of Energy and the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade annually holds major events related to the fuel and energy sector in Russia. The events, on the one hand, serve a showcase of new technologies in the industry and an effective purchasing platform and, on the other hand, a meeting point for the industry top leaders, government officials and industry experts, where they discuss the future of the industry. 1 Source: BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2017 2 Source: Russian Ministry of Energy
