OVERVIEW OF THE RUSSIAN MACHINERY MANUFACTURING Machinery manufacturing is a primary sector of economy which is rightfully regarded as the basis for the manufacturing industry. Machinery is used in all areas of human life to one extent or another. Moreover, development of machinery manufacturing affects defence capability and technological independence of the country. Russia’s machinery manufacturing includes more than 20 subsectors, among them chemical and petroleum engineering, machine tool building and tool making industry, instrument making, tractor and agricultural machinery industries, machine bulding for the textile and food industries etc. In the industry 22% are accounted for production of machinery and equipment; 47%, transport vehicles and equipment; 31%, electrical and optical equipment. INDUSTRY KEY FIGURES  7,500 large and medium-sized enterprises and companies  30,000 small business enterprises  40% of the total number of Russia’s industrial enterprises  4 million people engaged in the machinery manufacturing (1/3 of those employed in the manufacturing industry)  $96 billion is the production output of machine building enterprises in 2016  20% of the manufacturing industry is machinery manufacturing PRIORITIES OF THE INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT The share of imported machinery on the Russian market makes from 60 to 95 per cent (depending on a subsector). Therefore development of machinery manufacturing is one of the top priorities of the industrial policy approved by the President and the Russian Government. Nowadays the Russian Government strongly supports measures aimed to set up new companies and re-equip operating ones. We can see some increase in the costs designed for mastering of new technology and production of new competitive equipment. According to the government programmes, $45 billion are supposed to be allocated from the federal budget on development of the machine industry up to 2020. The machine tool industry is the foundation of the whole machine industry. Dynamics in production of metalworking equipment mirrors the economic situation worldwide. Russia ranks eighth in consumption of metalworking equipment following China, the USA, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Italy and Mexico. The annual consumption amounts to $2.177 billion. In 2017, $40.2 million were allocated to support the machine bulding industry.
