Introduction Mühldorfer Pferdefutter – the natural fodder for sport, breeding, working and leisure horses We are a mid-sized horse feed manufacturer located in Mühldorf am Inn in Upper Bavaria. We are always happy to provide you with our expert advice on all aspects relating to the correct, natural feeding of sport, breeding, working and leisure horses. Health is a precondition for performance and success! Starting with the manufacture of nutritious, near natural, pellet-free whole grain muesli products, we have focussed over more than 15 years on the development of optimally balanced individual nutritional concepts for horses. It is our aspiration to combine the power of nature, our many years of experience and the latest scientific findings in order to create superlative products. To ensure that we comply with this ambition, our horse feed products are manufactured to stringent quality standards. I assume personal responsibility for the quality of our products. Tradition and philosophy Tradition and use of the latest scientific and research findings guarantee that our feeds are both nutritious and healthy Our estate in Vogging Owned by our family for centuries We have been farming and keeping horses here for centuries Our expertise gained over centuries has been handed down from generation to generation Our traditional skills, supplemented by the latest scientific and research findings, ensure that our horse feeds are extremely nutritious and are especially healthy. Left: Nikolaus Mittermeier, 1870 Our evolutionary concept NATURE (experience) + INNOVATION (latest findings) = MÜHLDORFER PFERDEFUTTER Wholesome, healthy, natural, carefully composed and balanced. Our estate in Vogging Everything from a single source We concentrate on all aspects of the specific requirements, physical fitness and performance of horses, and specifically on their health and well-being. Thanks to our specialisation in the horse feed sector, we are also a leading and expert partner for those involved in equestrian sports. Among our oldest customers are many prominent horse owners, veterinary practices, equine clinics, breeders and riders. Our philosophy Over millions of years, the horse has evolved to suit its natural environment and as a result, has developed a very specific digestive system. At Mühldorfer Pferdefutter, we thus believe that all the nutritional components and active substances required by a horse are provided by nature. Natural ingredients must thus form the basis of every di- zentrale etary regimen for a horse, particularly where performance is concerned. For this reason, we only use carefully selected, high-quality starting materials to produce our Mühldorfer Pferdefutter. Irrespective of whether these are whole grain, hay, lucerne products or nutritional supplements (vitamins, minerals, trace elements, oils, medicinal herbs, etc.), all ingredients and components are subject to strict quality controls. 3 www.muehldorfer-pferdefutter.de

Science The evolutionary concept – meeting the needs of today‘s horses by taking into account their evolutionary development The horse as we know it today developed over a period of 50 A Camargue horse spends 60 % of the day simply eating. This million years from a forest-dwelling animal to one adapted to is equivalent to 14 hours; a stabled horse, on the other hand, living in a Steppe environment – and only over the past few only eats for 16 % (some 4 hours) of the day. There is an even hundred years has it had to become used to living in enclosed greater contrast in terms of time spent in non-activity (stan- spaces! The problem is that the current way in which we keep ding/resting/lying). A stabled horse is inactive for 84 % of the horses varies significantly from the environmental situation to day, while a Camargue horse is inactive for only 30 % of the which the horse has become accus- day. This means that a stabled horse tomed during its evolutionary devel- is just lounging around, not mov- opment. No – evolution has produced an animal Horses are also among the fastest land-based animals. They adapted to live on the Steppe that is supposed to be mobile are long-haul specialists and can maintain relative high for 70 % of the day. The cause of many of the so-called dis- speeds over longer distances – their cardiovascular system is eases of civilisation is to be found in the fact that there is a not unlike the engine of a Formula-1 racing car. major imbalance between evolved needs and actual lifestyle! Although the above are just two of the relevant aspects, the question arises of why our horses today tend to develop so many different illnesses. Why do so many become lame? Those who have seen wild-living horses on the Steppe will already know how resilient a horse‘s hooves actually are. Why do so many fall ill with colic? At universities, students are taught that the horse‘s intestinal system is simply too long and complex. But why should an intestinal system that has developed over a period of 50 million years turn out to be inefficient? What can be done? Has evolution made an error – is the modern horse merely an unsuccessful evolutionary side line or even a dead end that will eventually die out because of its susceptibility to illnesses? On the whole, this seems extremely unlikely; it is more probable that it is our failure to correctly understand the true requirements of the horse in the light of its evolutionary development that is the cause of all the problems. Here sports medicine and prophylaxis come into play. The best and simplest form of prophylaxis we can offer our horses is to adequately recognise and take into account their actual needs. Time budget over a 24-hour period 10 % 10 % 20 % 60 % 16 % 16 % 68 % Lying Standing Eating Other Salivation plays an important role in buffering gastric acid. It is thus hardly surprising that our sport horses suffer from so many stomach problems. The FEI has placed medications such as cimetidine and omeprazole (which are used to treat gastric ulcers) on its list of permitted drugs, which also includes de-worming agents and vaccines. This not only demonstrates how serious the problem is in the case of sport horses but also that it is already the case that our horses can no longer manage without them. 5 www.muehldorfer-pferdefutter.de Camargue horse Stabled horse Source: Duncan (1980), Killey-Worthington (1989)

Science One of the standard responses of vets when they are asked by a customer why a horse has developed colic is „...it‘s because of the long intestines, the structure of which is just too complex.“ So – again the question arises of whether evolution has made a mistake. But again, it really comes down to the fact that we are failing to adequately provide for the evolved needs of our stabled horses. The digestive system of the horse is such that it requires foodstuffs to be present for 24 hours so that these can be properly digested – it is not designed to deal with smaller portions delivered every 6 hours. It is not alone the digestive system that requires a continuous intake of nutrition – the horse‘s endocrine system is similarly constructed. By developing the endocrine system, the body has evolved a highly sophisticated way of regulating internal processes. It acts rather like the police controlling traffic, railway employees opening and closing points to direct trains and air traffic controllers coordinating flights, although the endocrine system is actually far more complicated and is comparable with a control centre that is responsible for supervising all three of the above tasks. And this endocrine system is also something that has naturally and gradually evolved over the millennia and is thus not capable of adapting itself within a few hundred years to the conditions in the modern world. This can be clearly illustrated using the example of insulin levels. The subsequent metabolism of carbohydrates absorbed by the body determines the levels of endogenous substances in the body, including insulin, and it is this hormone that regulates this process. The blue dotted line indicates the energy balance in a horse with continuous food intake. Only continuous intake of fodder provides for continuous absorption of nutritional components by the digestive system. This results in a relatively uniform rate of uptake of carbohydrates (glucose) and thus also in non-fluctuation of levels of insulin. The red line shows what happens to insulin levels when a horse is fed conventionally. Three times a day a certain amount of high nutrition fodder is offered at mealtimes. The fodder in this case is usually in an easily digestible form. After gastric passage (1-4 hours), the digestive tract suddenly has to process large quantities of readily digestible and thus rapidly absorbable carbohydrates. This leads to elevation of blood glucose levels. If the body did not have a regulatory system, this could well be seen as not a bad thing at all – after all, surely high blood sugar levels mean improved performance? However; the reality is different. Because what happens is that the body‘s regulatory system reacts by secreting more insulin to counteract the elevation of blood glucose, thus leading to a rapid fall in blood glucose levels. The glucose in the circulating blood is also processed with the aid of other hormones. The outcome is that blood glucose levels actually fall below their optimum concentration. High Blood glucose level / Horse feed Energy value / Blood glucose 0:00 hrs 6:00 hrs 12:00 hrs 18:00 hrs Fed with Conventional Optimum energy balance Low MÜHLDORFER HORSE FEED fodder of the horse Appropriately differentiated preparation of Mühldorfer whole grain and muesli products Carefully differentiated processes are used to prepare the whole grain for the muesli products of Mühldorfer Horse Feeds (popping, toasting, crushing); this ensures not only that their nutritional value is retained, but also that energy is supplied as required (over the short, medium and long term). Organically-bound vitamins, together with essential and secondary bioactive phytosubstances are most beneficial in their naturally developed organic composition and interaction. Preparation processes need to be employed that do not disturb this balance but that increase or make possible their uptake by the horse‘s digestive system. We all know about the negative effects of a low blood glu cose concentration and that hunger makes you irritable. In addition, the ability to concentrate and perform well decline – so, here we are again, back in the land of sports medicine. There is next to no chance that you will be able to start an event with your horse at a time that coincides precisely with the instant that its blood glucose levels peak after feeding. The futility of giving so-called energy boosters prior to a start is similarly apparent. Ingredients and processing Rebel, Fotolia© We use only the best ingredients for our Mühldorfer Pferdefutter and process these carefully to ensure that the nutritional goodness is retained for your horse Barley is an energy-rich, low-protein food for horses Oats supply readily digestible energy and have a relatively low protein content The energy provided by barley enters the horse‘s metabolic pathway more gradually than that provided by oats or maize. Barley thus makes horses less prone to skittish behaviour than oats or maize but provides just as much energy. Our various technical processes used to preserve nutrient goodness, such as toasting and crushing, improve digestibility by 15 % in comparison with that of the unprocessed grain. When oats are added whole to the feed, the high spelt content and the size means that they encourage the horse to chew. The saliva that is formed as a result plays an important role in buffering the animal‘s gastric acid. Because oats in their natural form are readily digestible, they do not need to be processed and can be added to feed as they are. Beneficial are the relatively high levels of unsaturated fatty acids and mucins. Maize – well tolerated with easily digested starches Maize contains less protein and fibre than oats, and is thus more energy-rich. It supplies good quality energy over the long term. By using various techniques to process it, such as crushing and popping, we significantly improve the digestibility of maize. Why do we use sugar beet syrup rather than the more usual molasses? Sugar beet syrup enables us to avoid the use of synthetic preservatives. Each grain kernel is given a protective coating of sugar beet syrup that prevents the loss of important nutrients. In addition, the syrup binds fine particles, so that our feeds can also be given to horses that are allergic to dust. Our sugar beet syrup consists of 50 % natural sugars and is very digestible for horses. In addition to the natural sugars, it also contains electrolytes, trace elements and vitamins. The sugar content of syrup is often overestimated and here is a simple illustrative calculation: if a feed contains 3 % syrup and 1 kg feed is given to a horse per day, the animal will ingest some 15 g sugar daily (assuming that the syrup has a sugar content of 50 %). By way of comparison: 700 g carrots has roughly the same sugar content. 7 www.muehldorfer-pferdefutter.de Erwin Wodicka, Fotolia© lily, Fotolia©

Not only sport and leisure horse riders know that this is the case; it is a view shared by many veterinary practices who are among the most regular customers for our 5-Grain Plus. Thanks to its balanced composition, good acceptance, wholesomeness and its excellent performance- and health-promoting effects, 5-Grain Plus oat-free is also ideal for use by large livery stables. No pellets, excellent acceptance and wholesomeness Whole grain, natural muesli without added synthetic nutrients for horses that are hypersensitive or allergic to one or more synthetic compounds. As the differentiated, nutrient-preserving processing of the grains in our 5-grain muesli ensures that organically-bound nutritional elements are retained, we also offer this tried-and-tested muesli product without the standard supplementation with a synthetic nutrient mixture as this can prove to be counterproductive in rare instances. We use only the best quality grains from controlled cultivation that are carefully processed to retain their nutrient value and that promote the enzymatic metabolism of carbohydrates and energy utilisation while not placing stress on digestive organs. The resultant improvement to energy supply means that quantities of high nutrition feeds provided can be reduced in favour of active substance- and fibre-rich roughage. This enhances the digestive process as a whole and helps maintain a balanced intestinal flora. iQ High-Fibre grain-free Country Meadow Struktur+ A structure-rich concentrated feed with a reduced cereal percentage Country Meadow Low Cobs A concentrated feed with reduced sugar and starch Country Meadow Hay The perfect roughagerich and low protein basic feed This structure-rich horse feed is suitable for replacing the previous concentrated feed or for upgrading the feed for a low cereal equine feed. The horse‘s salivation and intensity of mastication are improved by the high proportion of crude fibre; this can have a beneficial effect on the entire digestive process and prevent gastric ulcers. Low Cobs are a nutritious concentrated feed replacement for the customary concentrated feeds containing cereals. They were specially developed for horses, which must be placed on a low starch and sugar diet. They are pelletised, thus preventing segregation of the ingredients and enabling this concentrated feed to be used in automatic feeding systems. The Country Meadow Hay is a nutritious natural product from sustainable and environmentally-friendly cultivation that is ideal for all horses. Thanks to the careful processing, nutrient preserving drying procedure and particularly low dust content, it meets the most stringent quality requirements.
