three new teachers are welcomed into the o gorman family although the muller duo debate coach ms moeller and lunch lady norma jean timmerman will be missed change is inevitable while mrs fauteck is on maternity leave sdsu spanish teacher margarita margie hanson has taught spanish i and ii although she will only be teaching for six weeks hanson will be a cultured addition to our school a native of costa rica hanson moved to the united states in 1971 she has been teaching spanish at sdsu for four years i have been teaching at the college level for my professional career said hanson i am looking forward to teaching younger students at a catholic high school classroom management is a big difference from college another change from sdsu is the unique catholic high school atmosphere there is a friendly atmosphere and the kids respect each other said hanson hopefully some of hanson s costa rican heritage will rub off on the o gorman student body instructing biology class is 2006 o gorman frankie maxwell prices for many necessities have been on the rise and many students that have to pay for their gas and miscellaneous items are having trouble the economy has been really tough said junior alex shields i feel that my pockets are always empty many students having to deal with economic problems are forced to get jobs to keep up with the expenses they have to pay for i have to pay for many things on my own including my gas car insurance and some of my clothing said senior joey bezenek as the prices have been rising over the last year it makes it harder to have to pay for these necessities ten years ago gas prices were $1.51 now it is at $3.69 and that has risen 93 cents in the last year having to pay for this as a student is even harder at times because of school and activities in their life one way to come up with this money is through working in the summer i work 40 hours a week but in the school year i am only able to work 20 said shields along with struggling to pay for expenses many students have to pay for their own social cafeteria s new signs complete renovation frankie maxwell entertainment co-editor along with the many renovations happening around o gorman the cafeteria has also seen changes the o gorman cafeteria is a place where the students get to take a break for the school day with the new signs and better food the students can relax in style this year the lunch room has put up new signs to display not only the school name and logo but also what the students will be having for lunch the new signs are very helpful said junior shelby bloomer if i don t remember what s for lunch i just look up and-bam the menu is right there many students have noted that the lunch room is more organized than it has been for the past few years students get into every line instead of piling into one line creating chaos everything seems balanced which also keeps the lines moving with the new signage and facility the lunchroom is able to work to its fullest potential it seems like they are pushing for healthier food said junior haley maxwell there is a lot more fruit and the salad bar is very popular ellen nelson knight scroll after three years of construction the new performing arts center officially opened in september after being blessed by bishop paul swain performing arts center completes construction veronica fritsch miranda masek if o gorman was not visible by the rest of sioux falls before the building of the performing arts center it is now the highly anticipated tom and penny lorang theatre has officially opened its doors the $9.7 million project has produced a state-of-the-art facility that seats 1,000 ­ a significant number compared to the old auditorium of 600 seats the pac is world class you probably won t find this on most college campuses said assistant principal mrs joan mahoney boasting a fly system exceptional sound quality and broadway­inspired dressing areas the pac will not only be utilized for o gorman functions but also for community events in need of a significant space see pac page 2 school sees overall increase in enrollment miranda masek opinion editor even in the midst of an economic recession o gorman high school s enrollment continues to rise and school pride is as strong as ever the reasons for this can be traced to the foundation of the o gorman community i think you have to look at our mission said mrs joan mahoney it s about academic excellence with faith as the only school that offers superior academics and athletics mixed with the faith component enrollment hasn t suffered very much over the past few years we continue to offer what you can t find anywhere else said mahoney financial aid and scholarships help families afford the tuition the special needs grant helps families hit by the recession this grant is awarded to families in a state of financial emergency due to job loss health conditions or a change in marital status work study is also an opportunity for students to work to lessen their tuition in addition to the many scholarship opportunities offered many students at the high school take advantage of this opportunity and can be found 2 october 7 2011 news catholic schools web site updated for academic year shae krimmelbein activities co-editor many aspects of o gorman high school have changed over the summer just as the appearance of the high school has changed so has the sioux falls catholic schools web site the web site was redesigned to fit the needs of our visitors and users better said computer science teacher nathan hofflander the previous sfcs site was only about three to four years old however it could be difficult to work with we re just trying to keep up with the dominant paradigm which is an adapted `common framework or system of thought that is widely accepted in our society said hofflander with the new web site renovations sfcss.org is much easier to navigate the teachers have new pages to put assignments on as well there were several people who helped to upgrade the web site new site designers included the web site administrator hofflander principal mr kyle groos superintendent dr tom lorang and henkin-schultz a company that deals with advertising marketing and interactive design henkin-schultz created the actual web site and functionality said hofflander since the new web site is filled with new material new instruction to work with it was required before the school year was in full swing our technology committee received training here at the high school said hofflander renovations to the web site took up a majority of the summer months and the early weeks of august the new additions to the web site make it easier for students parents and teachers to navigate the site also the teachers and faculty can now add to their individual pages without compromising space on the school s internet servers you have to have updates to keep things running smoothly and provide the best online experience to our audience said hofflander the site is now accessible from all browsers including firefox and google chrome with the new renovations the site should be much easier to navigate and prove to be a bit more pleasing to the eye mrs margarita margie hanson ms caitlin werner mr alex anderson new teachers look forward to school year teachers continued from page 1 estelline high school additionally at sdsu werner majored in second education and biology much has changed at o gorman from five years ago when werner donned the graduation cap and gown although i reminisce about times in the old school it is awesome to be back said werner the building is much improved and i love my brand new science classroom in terms of the school faculty werner feels that almost nothing has changed i love o gorman i think that the teachers are fantastic and the students are a lot different from the public school kids said werner i love the catholic school atmosphere not wanting to hurt any ones feelings werner recalls that beloved band teacher smitty was her favorite faculty member doubling as both an academic service coordinator and an o gorman junior high football and basketball coach mr alex anderson has plenty of responsibilities at horace mann elementary anderson student taught in the fourth and fifth grade bridges program he also worked at whittier middle school where he taught in the tier ii behavior classroom in addition to the previous credentials anderson interacts with special needs children at the minnehaha juvenile detention center where he provides educational help to students a football player at usf anderson is eager to coach junior high football and basketball it s really fun i love working with younger athletes because they are easier to mold said anderson they are always excited to come to practice my goal is to coach varsity someday and i need to start somewhere anderson a roosevelt high school alum is impressed by o community continues to be proud to be called knights this year s seniors look like a group with a lot of school spirit said mahoney it has taken time for the seniors to obtain so much school spirit but with a mission unique to o gorman financial aid and scholarships and senior leadership for school spirit no other school offers the same experience o gorman high school has to offer this year s student body has around 750 students a number that has remained consistent the last few years economy continued from page 1 expenses these include food which for a family of four over the last year has risen by more than $400 on average per month prices at restaurants and fast food eateries have been on the rise as well making it harder for students to afford going out i can t always go to the movies or out to eat with my friends said bezenek however they have been pretty accommodating having a job during the school year is a tough thing to do because of homework and balancing activities it is also a positive because it allows working teenagers to appreciate their hard earned cash and with prices rising as much as they are every teen needs to save their money recognition even through an economic recession the community was dedicated to the project whole-heartedly we were lucky enough to start before the first recession said principal mr kyle groos despite the huge sum required by this project o gorman spared no expense in order to build the auditorium dr lorang noted how the success celebrated today and in the future would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the sfcs community it truly was a blessed effort pac continued from page 1 the arts department will also be able to perform in a facility worthy of the students talent congestion backstage will cease to be a problem due to the ample space for storage dressing and gatherings i am very excited to know that all of our school liturgies will be in an air-conditioned attractive facility more fitting to celebrate our coming together around the eucharistic table instead of a gymnasium said superintendent dr tom lorang whom the performing arts center is named after when asked what it feels like to have the theatre named after it truly was a blessed effort dr tom lorang him and his wife dr lorang said how much of an honor it is but to remember that the effort for this project was faith ellen nelson editor-in-chief every school year o gorman s campus ministry seeks to help students stay involved with their faith whether it s by attending daily mass participating in various events or working on christian service hours there is something for everyone in campus ministry the goals of campus ministry are to invigorate the faith community at o gorman said campus minister jonathan konz in a lot of ways it s taking what you re learning in your theology classes and putting it into action campus ministry really wants to get the students of o gorman more involved with the activities we will set up said junior haley maxwell a member of campus ministry s core team along with the annual events campus ministry sponsors such as empty bowls and serving at the banquet the core team and the theology department is working on new projects one such project is a retreat for the freshmen which will take place on november 2 in the past freshman unity day was both a spiritual retreat as well as an orientation retreat and in the past few years it s kind of gotten away from the spiritual component said konz so what we re doing is creating a freshman retreat for them so that they can get their orientation stuff done and then we can focus on their spirituality a freshman retreat is not the only new aspect of prayer life campus ministry has established in years past the chapel has been closed whenever daily mass or reconciliation is not offered this year however during the lunch hours there is always something to do in the chapel students can still go into the chapel to pray or sometimes hear konz play his guitar we re trying to make it more of a standard that the chapel will always be open said konz campus ministry wants to help students be invigorated with their faith not only this school year but also in the future faith speaks to so much more than just what you know it s how you live konz students should get involved because not only are our projects super fun they help others said maxwell though it is maxwell s first year on october 7 2011 3 campus ministry searches for fresh involvement lauren bird knight scroll mr konz enlightens members of the campus ministry core team about upcoming events the campus ministry s core team she s already enjoying her choice to participate and lead i m very excited about it she said i love the extra opportunities that i get to get more involved in my faith and to get other students involved as well catholic culture has a theme of laugh when others are watching as to promote the fun and entertainment campus minis try activities can be for students with all of the different kinds of events and retreats the campus ministry plays throughout the school year there is something for every student to enjoy and grow in his or her faith we cater to you we want to find ways to help you as an individual experience your faith and get involved in your faith and desire your faith said konz went to mass each sunday and prayed every day this summer or not the beginning of the school year is a chance to start anew in your relationship with god how just as you would take your books to class your instrument to band practice your uniform and shoes to a game don t forget that god s presence is with you wherever you go two simple ways to be reminded of god s presence with you are to pray and hall drive to school and so many other times throughout the day watch:things ennan hospital an example of praying and watching this past week took place as i met two women whom i had never met before mary and marion were women who i would only meet once as their lives were coming to an end with mary my presence in her life was important as she spent her last days here on earth because she had no family or friends to accompany her with marion it was just the opposite when they called me at 1:30 a.m sunday i walked into the emergency room to find it full of family members of all ages having never met marion or any of her family members they wanted me come so that i could share with her god s presence through the prayers and sacraments necessary for her to experience a happy and holy 4 october 7 2011 activities pac museum come alive with new show knight scroll knight scroll students rehearse a scene for the new fall show night at the wax museum the show is set to premiere october 21 the show will be the first play held in the new performing arts center mr nelson gives notes during a recent rehearsal interp team hopes national success translates to positive `11 12 season shae krimmelbein activities co-editor the o gorman high school oral interpretation team has added another champion shilpa chandran a 2011 graduate won the national championship in original oratory at the national catholic forensic league tournament held in washington d.c with school starting again the oral interpretation team has many high expectations to live up to with the successes from both national tournaments along with chandran steven schaeffer and caitlin woodard won second place in the nation in duo interpretation joey bezenek and genevieve fuller followed close behind them as quarterfinalists last year s team came home with the team excellence award it is only awarded to five schools in the nation the award is based on how well the entries perform the new team captains fuller frankie maxwell haley maxwell and charlie solomon have a reputation to uphold this year solomon along with 2011 graduate joey johnson placed seventh in the nation in duo interpretation at the nfl tournament in dallas they competed against 220 duos from across the nation submitted photo seniors tailgate in the howard wood parking lot before the 2011 bob burns dakota bowl fans share techniques for fall sport tailgating with six helpful tips cassie wilka veronica fritsch decorations pull out all your royal blue gold and white to decorate the site with pennants flags and streamers food light that grill make sure to load up on the burgers hot dogs chips cookies and all the junk food you can possibly imagine you don t want to go hungry during an intense game especially if it goes into overtime mark your territory make sure to arrive early and claim your space if you are a senior that means the night before the game music make sure to bring your ipod loaded with all the hottest pre-game jams don t forget that sub woofer to get your party rockin on entertainment for the simple tailgate bean bags ping pongs and cards will suffice but for the extreme tailgate fanatics flat screens rvs garbage truck pools golf carts mopeds and scooters are necessary to keep occupied all day attire anything other than decked-out blue and gold from head to toe is unacceptable paint those faces and pull out those jerseys submitted photo o gorman students finished in seventh place at the nfl tournament in dallas the tournament took place in june 2011 the freshmen and new students to the team are looking very promising and are a joy to work with said oral interpretation coach teresa fester i expect them to do their best and practice hard interp is subjective so each tournament stands alone and they can only do their best and wait to see what the judges for that day think numbers for interp remain high as nearly 110 students are participating in the activity this year interpers begin practicing in september and they continue on until february where they compete in the national qualifying tournament the first competition will be held at lincoln high school october 15 the first novice tournament will be at o gorman october 4 o gorman will also host its annual speech criterion november 4.

6 october 7 2011 sports when or who i would go to my dad told me after the game that i went to the oakland a s in the 28th round ks what were some of your motivations to leave wichita when you got drafted dc initially i was not expecting to sign because i wasn t drafted too high and because i was a draft eligible sophomore i had another year of leverage if i went back to school i went and played college summer ball and played well they ended up offering me enough money for me to not go back to school because i felt like it was enough of an investment by the a s to where i would get my chances to move up plus school would be paid for when i wanted to go back ks how did your wrist injury set you back and how did you rebound from that dc my wrist injury set me back because of course all professional sports are businesses dc my faith is always a big part of my life this life is busy and it has a lot of distractions and if you don t stay diligent it is easy to drift luckily through baseball i have met some of the most faithful people i know and i have learned a lot from them baseball players do get a bad rep sometimes and sometimes it is deserved but from my experience there are tons of good christians in this game that are doing great things as witnesses ks this summer you were temporarily moved up to aaa how has this experience motivated you to make that move permanent dc i did get moved up to aaa for 10 games this season but unfortunately it hasn t been a permanent move i have gone up three different times and two of them i knew i was going to fill in for a few games even though it was just to fill in i knew that it was a chance to have a good impression on the coaches and players so they would know that i want to be there and stay there i played well but it s a business and when big leagues get sent down it is a trickledown effect ks your fan base at o gorman is always increasing what advice would you have for all the knights who want to pursue a professional athletic career what kind of mentality does it take what are the key factors in making the dream a reality dc my advice for anybody who wants to play sports professionally is always put in the work because it pays off in the end make sure that you realize there are going to be ups and downs and you have to stay positive and persevere also try to play against the best competition you can because that is where you can really learn and get better then just pray and be prepared so when you get the opportunity you can run with it go knights coleman working way to majors veronica fritsch faith co-editor since graduating in 2006 dusty coleman s name continues to resound throughout the o gorman community as a local legend the three-sport standout high school athlete is currently in transit to a professional baseball career this summer he was temporarily moved up to the aaa level for 10 games in a recent interview the knight scroll had the opportunity to talk with dusty about his career and experiences knight scroll rewind to when you got drafted in 2008 what were you feeling that day what were your hopes and expectations if any dusty coleman actually the day that i was drafted my college team and i were playing florida state in super regionals trying to make it to the college world series i was expecting to get drafted but i really had no idea dusty coleman and each year new players come in missing a year put me behind some guys that were drafted after me i am still rebounding but mostly i just try to stay focused and realize that if i play well eventually i will get opportunities the trick is to take advantage of them it is a long road and i still have a lot of things to work on ks how has your faith been beneficial to you personally in the sports industry has it been a challenge to remain devoted with the high demands of your career knights look for leadership from seniors on way to state jake schreck entertainment co-editor the knights cross country team is beginning their season looking to make another run at state after finishing third last year this year s squad is led by 30-year coach doug lindner this year s group returns nine letter winners including seniors connor branick ben fichter keegan miles and lukas pitzl in addition to the senior leadership there is a talented set of underclassmen we have a great group and they have the opportunity to make some great gains in running said lindner they have shown so far that they are very willing to work hard and stay together the knights are looking to improve on their third place finish last year but they will face some tough competition along the way this is always the tough question said lindner referring to how the team will compete this year against the state competition a lot depends o gorman runs the ball against the washington warriors knight scroll special teams shine as knights avenge championship loss josh jorgensen sports co-editor after allowing an early touchdown against washington the knights scored 24 unanswered points to drop the defending state champions in the 33rd annual bob burns dakota bowl the special teams proved to be the real story in the game as they scored 17 points off of two blocked punts and a blocked field goal we wanted to come out and prove ourselves and make big plays said senior safety weston bednar both teams fell in heartbreakers at presidents bowl the previous week to keep pace with their city rivals ­ and to have any shot at a first-round bye ­ both teams needed a win washington struck first ­ and early ­ on a drive that swung momentum in their favor on a 23 yard pass to split the secondary after that drive we knew our pass rush had to step up and we needed to have better coverage said bednar the knights defense tightened up not allowing washington to get another score late in the second quarter a blocked kick put the game at 21-7 and the knights never looked back the loss dropped washington to 1-2 putting them out of contention for the city championship and putting the knights in second place in the state it was a good feeling said bednar they always act like they re the best and better than everyone and we got to shut them up for once on how we progress as the season moves along we hope for good things in addition to the returning talent another reason for optimism about this year s team is the relatively large group of runners compared to previous years this year s team is the largest group we ve had in about 10 years and one of the largest ever we have a great combination of veteran runners and newcomers said lindner one of the returning veterans senior jonah beacom embraces both the challenge and honor of being a team leader and believes this year s team can do some good things with a strong effort it feels good [to be a team leader said beacom we have a strong group of young kids that could benefit from direction from the upperclassmen if we work hard we will have a good chance at state we run until we cannot run anymore the 2011 state meet will be held in sioux falls on oct 22 girls tennis aiming for five-peat dustin haffeman staff writer with the fifth consecutive state championship in their sights the lady knights will look to young talent to stiffen the competition the new look knights are anxious to see where they will fit in with the rest of the competitors our goal is to obviously win state and play the best we can said senior mary prouse prouse being the only senior in the top six will be looked upon heavily for leadership i feel that i have a role to lead and to keep the spirits on the team up she said the other players in the top six include seventh graders sam czarnecki and sidney brower freshman morgan brower and sophomores mary billion and jenna czarnecki the toughest opponents for the lady knights will be rapid city stevens and st thomas more a loss to stevens earlier this year put the knights record at 12-1 and it also broke the 96 match win streak that the knights had previously held the record is 105 straight wins while putting that match in their rear view mirror the knights had a chance to take their talents to wisconsin to play in the dominican cup the knights have strong team chemistry and look to continue their dominance throughout the year at this point it s anyone s game said prouse i know we can win we just need to play at high level of tennis and play our game

sports jake schreck entertainment co-editor a familiar face has returned to o gorman athletics this year julie kolbeck is back as the lady knights head volleyball coach originally from dell rapids kolbeck grew up in sioux falls and has lived here her entire life except for her two year residence in minneapolis kolbeck s high school years were spent at o gorman where she was a member of back-to-back state championship teams including the knights first state volleyball championship in 1987 and a repeat in 1988 upon graduating from o gorman kolbeck attended south dakota state university where she played volleyball for the jackrabbits kolbeck returned to the knights after college as an assistant volleyball coach until 1996 when the knights had an opening for the head coach position the job was offered to kolbeck and she accepted after the 2002 volleyball season kolbeck and her family moved to minneapolis but two years later the kolbecks returned to sioux falls cassie wilka activities co-editor with a new coach and heightened spirits the volleyball team has a different outlook on their season this year after beating their albatross lincoln it seemed as though the volleyball program changed as a whole the feeling of success after beating lincoln didn t end there the lady knights continue on a winning streak with a record of 5-4 with key losses going to rapid city stevens aberdeen central and washington the volleyball program at o gorman has struggled in recent years but julie kolbeck who has led the lady knights to the state tournament before has returned as the varsity head coach as a coach she has not only changed the way the knights play volleyball but also their attitude she has instilled more confidence in us and is pushing us harder said junior sam foley the extra push has had a positive result as this season has been more successful than previous years beating lincoln who were the state champions in 2010 brought out many different emotions in the team it proved a lot to ourselves and october 7 2011 7 new coach adds fire team gains momentum showed us how far we have come from last year as a team said foley the rest of the season has a high bar set with many goals in mind we have more dedication and a drive to prove people wrong and to show that we have improved and changed said foley the change in mind is their goal to make it to the state tournament for the first time since 2004 we re going to try our best to make it to the state tournament this year and prove to the state that we can do anything we put our minds to said senior defensive left back mikaela schnetter as excited as the team is for being successful a lot of hard work still has to be put forth if they want to accomplish their goal of going to state we still need to come out with focus and believe in ourselves said foley we need to worry about our own game and not our opponents we are our worst enemies sometimes a student section at the games is another improvement seen in the volleyball program we actually have a crowd this year and that helps us get pumped up and have a bigger drive to win said schnetter the knights defeated the patriots 3-2 sioux falls was always home said kolbeck our entire family is here and it was always our goal to move back upon her return to sioux falls kolbeck took the head coach position at roosevelt high school and was there from 2004-2006 although this was her first experience with volleyball outside of o gorman kolbeck had no problem with taking the challenge of coaching at a new school every program i have been associated with has had wonderful and dedicated girls said kolbeck the only differ knight scroll ence is the school size kolbeck takes over for a team that finished 8-15 last year and some would think that there is extra pressure to have success following a disappointing season but kolbeck doesn t see it that way and is confident with the group of athletes that she has been given this year i don t feel any extra pressure we have a good group of girls with positive attitudes that are very dedicated to improving their game [we look to improve with each practice and game the state tournament in october the knights have battled injuries all year losing starters alex einsel and tony klein we will need some sophomores to step up to overcome these injuries said senior midfielder quaid scheafer last year s returning starters include goalie alex nelson defenders matt haeder and tyler pals midfielders quaid schaefer and matt meisinger and striker ramon gutierrez they gained a recent 2-1 victory against the washington warriors it was a big win said senior midfielder quaid scheafer currently the knights are focusing on the upcoming playoff game anyone can win it awareness games hosted by the football and volleyball teams each team dons pink attire in hopes of spreading cancer awareness throughout the sioux falls community the student athletic trainers led by rochelle lauret were the first to discover and become fans of the pink games the trainers liked the pink theme and we were encouraged by the state and national athletic trainers associations to involve more people said lauret many families are affected by cancer every year the pink themed games bring hope for a cure i have lymphoma and leukemia cancer history in my family said lauret so any type of awareness brings us closer to a cure by coming together as a community this theme brings hope to cancer victims and proves to them that they are not alone students and players alike become very involved with the theme for each game pink pom poms and shirts are sold at a low price it helps unify the students who participate in the theme and helps make a fun game said senior sarah barthel the goal is to have every person present at the game wearing at least one article of pink if the entire crowd is covered in pink no matter which team they are rooting for the goal of the games has been achieved the pink theme not only brings awareness to cancer but helps to show victims and family that the world is rooting for them even though their main focus is on the game football and volleyball players are very involved with the theme preparation of pink items they wear is planned months in advance players wear pink tape in hopes of adding to the awareness the more people who are feature hal wick dick ellenbecker dick english cay johnson guest writers fifty years ago cathedral high school was closed and o gorman high school opened as we look back at the new high school for some of us the memories fade but some will last for much longer some stories like the passing of our football coach lee dolan the summer before the school opened was a difficult loss most people in town probably questioned why anyone would build a high school so far out in the country while 41st street was a hard surface twolane road it was joined at the corner of the school by kiwanis kiwanis was gravel from 26th 28th or oak st after heading toward school it was cornfields south of oak st south of 41st west of the new school and with the exception of a few homes east of the school it was fields all around as the school year approached the city had no sewer line to the school and did not plan on having one at the time the bishop went to the city and said we ll just put all the kids in public schools the line was built quickly to prevent that because the downtown washington high school was so overcrowded that they had double schedules for their students there were no lights in the gym until the week before the basketball season opened the tuition is one thing that went up in the first year your first student from a family was $90 a year and $60 for the second $30 for the third student and if you had more siblings in the school they were free we had several teachers that were nuns both dominican and presentation dick english drove them to school and back to the convent next to the cathedral every day the sisters all wore habits they were never seen in civilian clothing we also had several priests that taught a variety of subjects and all religion courses as the school opened our principal was father howard carroll a younger priest we had a dean of men mr ed mcguire and the dean of women was sister john dominici they were father carroll s enforcers on a daily basis and father carroll only dealt with those of us that he had real issues with like dating or long hair for boys hair could not touch the collar the boys were required to wear brown corduroy blazers a shirt and tie with khaki pants the girls wore brown plaid pleated skirts rollup shortsleeved white blouse with a mandatory brown cardigan sweater or a long-sleeved button-down collar blouse no sweater required some felt the uniform was great the north-enders never had to compete in the fashion area with the students from the south part of town the skirt length was just below the knee but the fashion of the day was shorter skirt lengths some of the girls trying to match the day s new fashion would roll the waistband of the skirt to a shorter length however if one of the nuns thought a skirt was too short girls were asked to kneel on the floor if asked to kneel the girls hoped and prayed that the hem would touch the floor to avoid getting a detention for such an impure act the school had two wings o and g the o wing was the boys wing classes were separated except for classes such as math physics and chemistry october 7 2011 11 alumni reflect on o gorman s first year that were mixed due to lower attendance hall monitors made sure that the boys did not go to the girls wing and vice versa they were also there to make sure that nobody left school or entered any area off-limits it was a tough year for the football team the basketball team was better we could not play in the state tournament and took second place in the state catholic tournament held in the mitchell corn palace in 1962 the girls had no physical education class or choices for sports one group of senior girls went ice skating so they could get a picture in the sports section of the student prints we had no musicals back then but father al krysopolski taught english and directed the first play titled to tell the truth another memorable test for the first year was the february snowfall in three weeks of february we had snowfalls of 32 20 and 14 a total of 66 the senior boys helped shovel the snow off the roof and no sky lights were broken.
