HOMEWOOD - FLOSSMOOR PARK DISTRICT park district Dear Neighbors: The recent election brings reflection on how change is both inevitable and exciting. Current Board President, Bob Haderlein, will be stepping down in May after serving the park district and community for twelve years. Bob has been a great leader, serving as president of the board for eight of his twelve years. The April 4th election saw a terrific response from community members interested in getting involved, with seven people running for three available positions. Election results have incumbents Dallas Collins and Brent Bachus maintaining their seats and Christina Farley-Jackson joining the team. Our residents should feel reassured that they are represented by a group of individuals dedicated to the ongoing success of the park district in every possible way. They work diligently to create a vision for the park district to meet our community’s ever changing needs. We take pride in providing programs, parks and facilities that meet our residents’ needs at a great value. For example, a Lions Club Pool family membership costs $195 for the entire summer. If you break that down over the 13 week season, it’s $15/week for unlimited visits for the entire family. Even at one visit per week that is a fantastic deal; visit three or four times per week and it’s an incredible value. Our Stomping Grounds summer camp is offered at the low cost of $4.30 per hour, the same price as the summer of 2016. Some of our other great values include options to drop in and play for a few hours at a time: Open Gym ($5), Open Table Tennis ($5), Open Climb ($10) and Open Skate ($6); these programs do not require preregistration and are open to all ages. Since we’re talking about value, there are many free programs included in this issue of Choices. We have three Starry Nights Concerts, the Annual Watermelon Eating Contest, Family Fun in the Parks, Community Band Concerts, Movies in the Park, Playground Playdates, a Prairie at Night walk, Story Trails and our new Neighborhood Sandlot Games. As stewards of taxpayer dollars, the park district has always taken pride in the vast variety of offerings available right here in the H-F community. A quick glance at neighboring communities will show that our overall options are second to none. Even with the difficult financial times all local government agencies have faced over the last five years, our team goes the extra mile to try to provide the very best experiences at reasonable rates right here in the H-F community. We hope you find many items in this issue of Choices that pique your interest and we hope to see you often… our mission TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THE HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR PARK DISTRICT COMMUNITY THROUGH EXCEPTIONAL RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, FACILITIES AND PARKS WHILE PRACTICING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP. BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS The Board of Commissioners meets at 7 pm on the third Tuesday of every month at the Goldberg Center. The commissioners are: Brent Bachus, Dallas Collins, Debbie Dennison, Christina L. Farley Jackson and Steve Johnson. LEISURE SERVICES COMMITTEE The Park District is looking for members of the Homewood and Flossmoor communities to serve on the Leisure Services Committee. The committee meets monthly and terms are two years. The Committee discusses items before being presented to the Board of Commissioners. If you are a participant of our programs and facilities and wish to hear more about the committee or wish to volunteer for this committee, please fill out the application that can found at hfparks.com/forms or call Stephanie Simpson at 708.957.0300 or ssimpson@hfparks. com. The following are members of the committee: Carla Porter-White, Shannon Ford, Gerald Torrance, Mary Hughes, Lee Roe, Calvin Harden, Ryan Tracy and Sarah Chavez. SENIOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Senior Advisory Committee is an active group of senior adults interested in activities and programs for the senior community. Its members are as follows: Ron Baker, Helen Biel-Gardner, Joyce Flaws, Mary Anne Henry, Elaine Smith, Clemerstean Wheat. camps summer camps stomping grounds Join us for Stomping Grounds summer camp. The place for fun since 1977! What’s great about our camp? As a park district, we recognize the importance of fun and social play. We know that leisure and recreation is foundational to our development. Because of this, we stack our camp day with plenty of fun at the park, at the pool and around the community. We also know that kids need an element of challenge to keep their minds active. We build activities around learning in a fun environment, regularly incorporating science, technology, engineering, arts and math into the camp week. You’ll find our campers engaged in reading, building, gardening, and exploring. It’s a great opportunity for your camper to enjoy the summer, full of play, swimming, learning and, of course, lots of laughter.
