the inner city weekender friday september 30 2011 lifestyle susan garrad 11 staying healthy q we ve been trying to conceive for over a year and my partner has now been diagnosed with problems with his sperm is there anything he can do to improve his sperm health you re not alone with your problem recent studies show that one in six australian couples are unable to conceive naturally and that one in every 25 men has a low sperm count the good news is that ivf is not the only answer research shows that many natural herbs and vitamins are highly effective in improving sperm health anti-oxidants such as selenium zinc vitamin c lycopene coq 10 and vitamin e play a vital role as do the herbs astragalus ginseng and tribulus sperm is very vulnerable to environmental toxins and so it s important that men clean up their diet and lifestyle to enhance their sperm health · eat a healthy diet high in protein fruit and vegetables · cut back on smoking and alcohol consumption · avoid heat stress keeping fit · keep mobile phones well away from the groin area · be checked for stis · lose some weight if necessary there is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting the use of antioxidants and nutritional supplementation for men with low fertility i treat many men for poor sperm health in my clinic with four months treatment i can make huge improvements in sperm count shape and motility making fertilization more likely david stein i received this question how do i know which trainer to choose while this is ultimately a personal preference here are a few areas worth asking about do they have experience working with people just like you being a competitive bodybuilder or an extreme black ops assassin is great but not much help if your looking for some post natal pelvic strengthening likewise i wouldn t ask my yoga teacher to get me ready for a ufc cage fight but i would ask jamie tehuna who won his ufc fight on the weekend in the usa a good trainer will have the knowledge to design the workout around you to get you to your goals efficiently ask them what they are best at most trainers have some field they`re involved with and have good knowledge in a trainer who specialises in everything may not have great depth of knowledge in the area you most need how do they keep their knowledge up to date fitness is a young and exciting industry and is constantly being updated and improved with new research we have come a long way from the old school footy coach yelling out do 20 laps and 50 pushups to train for everything in australia we need a minimum of the certificate iv in fitness to become a registered personal trainer we then need ongoing training and to re-register every two years asking about this might give you an idea of the trainer s commitment to their field or if it s just a hobby pricing is really variable i ve seen trainers with six weeks experience asking $100 and there can be great trainers with years of experience charging half that because they just love doing it at the end of the day if you re happy with what you re paying then they are worth it so talk to the trainer in my experience most trainers are honest and in the industry because they are passionate about feeling fit vibrant and healthy and love helping others experience it if they can make you feel that passion and get you to want more you will know it s genuine and they should certainly be on your shortlist school holiday cooking and sewing workshops wednesday 4th october balmain town hall meeting room your child will cook and sew a funky bag with artspark and also cook up a storm with little spoons all this while having plenty of fun and learning new cooking and sewing skills 10am 4pm and the price includes all materials and lunch to advertise in our paper 0422 104 652 www.littlespoons.com.au call our sales experts 058icd1116 call toni on 9549 1196 058icd1089
