COVER STORY Beauty & The (PMS) Beast Louise Duffy was thrilled to discover Cleanmarine For Women completely alleviated the effects of PMS.The fact they’ve made her look more beautiful? Well, that’s just an added bonus. Just like 90% of Irish women who believe that PMS is a normal part of a woman’s monthly cycle, Louise Duffy had been suffering the painful, exhausting effects of PMS since she was a teenager. However, when it started to get much worse a couple of years ago, she decided enough was enough and listened to her friends’ advice: to take Cleanmarine For Women. She hasn’t looked back. When did you first begin to suffer from PMS? As soon as I hit my teens, I started to suffer from cramps every month; they would really knock me for a day or two. But I really began to experience the emotional effects of PMS a couple of years ago when I was working on an early morning breakfast show. My alarm went off at 4am every day, so I was constantly exhausted. This really heightened my experience of PMS.    What kind of symptoms did you have to endure each month? I would find myself feeling anxious and tense for one or two days every month. I wouldn’t have the same energy or enthusiasm as usual; instead I would feel completely listless.  What made you want to try Cleanmarine For Women? In my job, it’s really important that I’m upbeat and enthusiastic every day. I absolutely hated feeling off or out-of-sorts every month, and trying to conceal it. So I was looking for a natural supplement to counter the effects of PMS. Some of my friends had been taking Cleanmarine for Women and raved about the effects, so I decided to give it a try and I’m very glad that I did.     How has Cleanmarine For Women changed your life? It has made a massive difference for me; it has completely alleviated the effects of PMS. But in addition to this, it has improved my overall wellbeing; my hair looks shinier and my skin is much clearer. I wasn’t overly concerned about either, so that’s a happy bonus.    Do you do anything else to keep PMS at bay? Yes, I’ve incorporated some foods into my diet that are known to improve the effects of PMS, like avocados and berries… oh, and dark chocolate! I also ensure that I exercise at least four times a week; I think this really helps. No.1 tune on your PMS playlist? My PMS playlist is my favourite! Music has such an incredible effect on our emotions; it can really pick you up when you need it. My favourite track on my PMS playlist is Robyn’s, Dancing on My Own, but I had so much fun creating a PMS playlist with my listeners, with some brilliant suggestions like If I Were a Boy and Everybody Hurts. (Check out the Spotify link here http://bit.ly/2ocTARM – Ed)   You’re looking fab – is keeping healthy important to you? Thank you! Yes, I really think it’s so important to look after yourself, and as I get older, I’m a lot more mindful of this. I can’t eat the same food I would get away with when I was younger, and if I fall out of my exercise routine, I notice it very quickly. Eating well, exercising, and caring for your skin all lends itself to you feeling better emotionally too.   When do you like to exercise? I like to exercise first thing in the morning, so I’m free for the day! 4 NaturalLife / Summer 2017

COVER STORY I used to go to the gym, but about two years ago I started practicing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) sessions at home, and now I’m hooked. They take just 20 minutes and you can incorporate any variety of exercise, so no matter how I try, I really can’t find any excuse not to fit a session in most days!    What’s your daily diet like? I follow the ‘breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like  a pauper’ regime. Breakfast has always been my favourite meal; I usually make avocado toast with eggs or wholewheat pancakes with berries. For lunch I’ll make a vegetable stir-fry or chicken dish, and since I work until 9pm, dinner is usually a sad salad at my desk. I try not to snack when I get home as it’s so late; instead I’ll have some nuts and fruit throughout the day.    How do you stay motivated? During the week, I eat well and exercise as much as possible, so that when the weekend rolls around, I don’t feel so bad about eating what I want or skipping a HIIT session. This balance definitely motivates me.   Do you have any health and fitness tips you’d like to share? I’m a big fan of The Body Coach, Joe Wicks, both for exercise and diet. He has a wonderful variety of HIIT sessions on YouTube, and his cookbooks have so many easy, healthy recipes.     What’s the best health advice you’ve ever been given? Get plenty of sleep. For about six years my alarm went off before dawn, and towards the end it took its toll; I looked about 10 years older and I was perpetually exhausted. Now, I never underestimate the benefits of a good night’s sleep.     What’s the best beauty tip you’ve ever received? Invest in skincare as opposed to make-up. I always make sure I cleanse, tone, use a good serum and moisturiser. The more I look after my skin, the less make-up I actually need.    Have your friends and family noticed a difference in you since taking Cleanmarine For Women? Yes, definitely, especially the physical improvements. My friends keep asking me about this mysterious, new skincare regime! Summer 2017 / NaturalLife 5

Summer Fitness Made Simple All-Ireland Champion, Alan Brogan, reveals his top five tips for sticking to your fitness regime this summer. Alan Brogan 1 Use the bright mornings to exercise before the kids are up. While it can be difficult getting up at 6am to do an hour’s exercise before work, it will give you a great start to the day. I’ve always found it easier in the summer months and it can be a peaceful time of the day to get your workout done. 2 Up your water intake; the extra bit of heat in the summer time can lead to a greater need for hydration. Training in more humid conditions can lead to extra perspiration, so it’s important to make sure this water is replaced. 3 Keep up your training regime on your holidays. There’s nothing better than an early morning jog in sunny Spain or Portugal. It will keep you energised on your holiday and it’s important not to break good training habits built up during the year. 4 Recover well. A favourite tip of mine is to always have a recovery sea swim. It’s difficult during the winter, but during the summer a quick evening recovery dip is amazing and something the whole family can participate in. All provided you live close to the sea or are on holidays by the beach. And if not, why not visit your local pool? It works just as well. 5 Eat seasonal fresh food and make the most of our summer fruit and veg. Life can get hectic, so I always top up my diet with two capsules of Cleanmarine For Men before my breakfast. There’s no fishy aftertaste; I notice a definite energy boost, and my joints ache less too.   MEN’S HEALTH Summer 2017 / NaturalLife 7

Hot & BotheredROADTORECOVERY Keep your cool during menopause with this advice from Nutritionist Susie Perry Debice. A s the warmer weather starts to creep in, common menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes can start to build in intensity and become more frequent as we head into the summer months. Some women simply experience a warm sensation that rises through the body, whereas others have a more extreme reaction resulting in them breaking out in a sweat. So why do hot flushes happen during the menopause? A gland in your brain called the hypothalamus is in charge of your internal thermostat and it’s thought that when you go through the menopause, fluctuating levels of oestrogen and progesterone cause the hypothalamus to become confused and unable to gauge your correct body temperature. Every now and again the hypothalamus thinks that your body temperature is too high, so it initiates a hot flush and sweating in an attempt to bring you back to the right temperature. Ditch the caffeine Tea, coffee and energy drinks containing caffeine can all increase the severity of a hot flush. Cut back slowly to avoid a headache by swapping out tea and coffee for herbal teas. Cooling cotton There’s nothing quite like synthetic or nylon-based fabrics to make you feel sweaty. If you are prone to hot flushes, stick to clothes made from natural fibres such as cotton or linen as these allow your body to ‘breathe’. Stress busters Being stressed and running around chasing your tail just notches up the frequency and severity of hot flushes! Clear your diary and make space each day to relax in the summer sun. Call in the support of family and friends and take steps to heal any troublesome relationships as this can have a profound effect on your hormones. Multi-nutrient support Menopause is a phase of life when your body can do with some extra nutritional support to help it cope with all the internal changes that are taking place. Vitamin D is essential to help your mood and also your bones. Next up are soy isoflavones, which contain a natural source of oestrogen to help settle those hormone highs and lows. B vitamins such as B1, B2, B6, folic acid and biotin help combat feelings of fatigue and tiredness. The good news is you can get all of these nutrients in Cleanmarine MenoMin – think of it as your all-inone menopause supplement. Finally, studies using Cleanmarine MenoMin have shown fantastic results helping reduce the frequency and severity of hot flushes. No matter how hot the weather gets outside, you now have a tool box of tips and techniques to help keep you cool on the inside, making your menopause more manageable whatever the weather! Don’t forget to talk to you friends as they are likely to be experiencing similar symptoms and you can support each other through this phase of life. For more information, visit cleanmarine.ie or ask in your local health food store or pharmacy. Susie Perry Debice is the author of Premenstrual Syndrome: The Essential Guide available from nurturingspring.co.uk and has over 18 years experience as a nutritional therapist helping women find their way back to hormone balance through diet and lifestyle changes. 12 NaturalLife / Summer 2017

SUMMER BODY Summer BodySimpleStepsToA From eating protein to taking Apple CiderVinegar, Nutritionist Kerry O’Connor reveals how you can get your body bikini-ready. A pple Cider Vinegar is longestablished as a natural remedy for so many conditions, from arthritis to diabetes. At this time of year though, with the longer stretch in the evenings, and the taste of summer in the air, we tend to look to Apple Cider Vinegar for its weight-loss benefits and the promise of helping us feel comfortable in our bikini bodies.  Apple Cider Vinegar has been shown to act as a natural appetite suppressant, thereby reducing our daily intake of calories. It controls our blood sugar levels, making it easier to stick to healthy eating, and makes us less inclined to reach for the sugary snacks. It also stimulates metabolism which can make you burn fat faster due to its high concentrations of organic acids and enzymes.  For those of us who find it hard to swallow Apple Cider Vinegar liquid, Apple Cider Vinegar Mega from New Nordic is the easy solution to this dilemma. One tablet a day gives us a healthy dose of fermented Apple Cider Vinegar which, when combined with the extra ingredients of dandelion and globe artichoke, will help reduce bloating and remove excess fluid and toxins from the body: exactly what we need on those sunny days.  Apple Cider Vinegar Mega has introduced the addition of chromium into each tablet. Chromium plays a big part in controlling our sugar cravings and balancing our blood sugar levels which is an added benefit in maintaining a healthy eating plan.  As we all know, there is no such thing as a quick fix. However, with Apple Cider Vinegar, the fact that our cravings are reduced, we feel fuller, we’re burning abdominal fat, reducing our waist circumference and our triglycerides naturally just by taking one tablet a day, helps make it that bit easier to keep up the good work.  We can also help ourselves to lose weight by adding a few extra habits into our day.  • T he latest guidelines for greater health now involves eating up to 10 fruit and veg portions a day instead of the previously recommended five. When you think about it, you wouldn’t have time to snack or overeat if you were eating 10 portions a day. • D rinking water half an hour before eating and getting rid of sugar from our diets are two of the best ways to lose weight. • E ating protein (beans, pulses, nuts and seeds, spirulina, eggs and meat) with every meal keeps you feeling fuller for longer and reduces snacking.  • L ifting weights three times a week encourages the body to burn fat and stops your metabolism from slowing down as well as keeping you toned.  As always, a combination of exercise and a healthy diet are the cornerstones for weight loss, but the addition of Apple Cider Vinegar Mega helps support the body to maximise fat burning and minimise the cravings that can sometimes make it hard to stick to a new healthy eating plan.  Try these great tips alongside Apple Cider Vinegar. What have you got to lose? 8 Summer 2017 / NaturalLife 13

PARENTING TIPS ParentsATestingTimeFor Keep stress levels to a minimum during exam time with this sound advice from Nutritionist Kevin Doyle. D uring exam time, it’s not only your child who’ll suffer with the dreaded weight of stress – it’ll be you, the parent, as well. My first tip to follow during this time is to stay in the present moment. When we live like this, we make better decisions. This will have a positive ripple effect on those people you love. It’s imperative to pass on good coping skills to your child during stressful times, or it’ll be a house of horrors otherwise. Life’s too short to live like that. So, along with the most important tip of staying in the present moment, I’ve some other guidelines that might help during this demanding time. How about if you batch-cook food and freeze it during this period? Would this take the pressure off at all? Also, maybe pick up a plethora of healthy snacks in your local health food store to help keep your child’s brain sharp and their mood steady. Have you heard of the all-natural ingredient product Melissa Dream? It’s brilliant for a peaceful and restful sleep or, if you like, take it during the day to help with stress. On top of the previous ideas, try five minutes a day of meditation to clear your head of busy thoughts. Attempt only to do things that are a priority, and take out the stuff that doesn’t matter. Watch the stress decrease. For those restless nights, try Irish Botanica Peace and Calm – just a teaspoon half an hour before bed aids sleep. Medical herbalist David Foley, a man with so much integrity and passion for herbs, formulated this fantastic valerian herbal tincture that has taken the country by storm. You can also use this product during the day for symptomatic relief of mild anxiety. My final tip is to be a good listener during the build-up to the exams and during them as well. No matter how much you say to your child that the exams aren’t the end of the world, to them they mean everything. Immerse yourself in your child’s world during this period and give your all to them. This time won’t be easy, but anything worth working for never is. Oh, and when the exams are over, go out and celebrate together! Best of luck to all involved. 14 NaturalLife / Summer 2017

Recipe QUESTION CORNER RICH CHOCOLATE, PISTACHIO AND BLOOD ORANGE TORTE If you love gooey and rich desserts, this delicious gluten-free, veganfriendly chocolate cake will hit the spot, says Maggie Lynch. 225 grams dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) 125 grams coconut oil Zest of 1 blood orange 20ml freshly squeezed orange juice 2 tablespoon VeganEgg replacer (source HF shops or online) 150ml chilled water 200 grams coconut or rapadura sugar or stevia erylite 200ml soya yoghurt 125 grams avocado flesh (1 large avocado) ½ banana 300 grams ground almonds ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom 70 grams chopped pistachio nuts 3-4 slices thinly sliced blood orange (opt*) 8” cake tin with removable base 1. Mix in ground almonds, cardamom and ¾ of the chopped pistachio. 4. Bake at 150c for 1 hour or until baked. Then 10 minutes before it is ready, sprinkle leftover pistachio nuts on top of cake. 5. Remove from oven, leave to cool before removing from tin. 6. Store in an airtight container. Maggie’s Top Tips: Maggie Lynch • Best baked a day ahead of time as it is easier to handle. • Replace pistachio nuts with walnuts or hazelnuts • Be warned! NUTRITIONAL ADVISOR CATHY DOYLE ANSWERS YOUR MOST PRESSING HEALTH QUESTIONS. Q. I dread the spring and summer months as I suffer greatly with hay fever and also sinus. Is there anything you can suggest? A. I completely understand your problem as I used to suffer dreadfully with that myself. The wonderful Irish herbalist David Foley suggested that I take Irish Botanical Reishi Mushroom supplement. Reishi helps the immune system to fight off pollen and other allergens. I was also continually getting strep throat during this time, so I took four capsules every morning. I found that it took six weeks of taking Reishi before it worked, so patience is necessary. I am happy to report that I haven’t suffered since, so it was well worth the wait! Start now before the pollen season arrives. Q. I have to get two wisdom teeth pulled. Is there something I can do to help recovery? A. Yes, not my favourite thing either! Udo’s Choice Super 5 microbiotic is a wonderful lozenge to use before you go to dentist and as soon as you leave the dental surgery. It contains lactobacillas salivarius and other cultures that are specific for gum health. Suck two lozenges every day (keep them on or near where the teeth were extracted), and use for two weeks or more to stop infection and aid healing. Email your questions to editor@ naturalife.ie.
