the western weekender friday september 30 2011 news local 3 as greg davies settles into his third term as mayor in the last decade he says he ll work in the role full time and believes that creating local jobs is a key for penrith s growth and longterm future reg davies has declared he will be a full time mayor but it s unlikely you ll see him wearing the traditional mayoral robes cr davies said he ll wear the robes for citizenship ceremonies but outside of that the robes can stay behind the door for the next year in a one-on-one interview with the western weekender on tuesday just a week after being returned to the job he has held twice before cr davies said the role of mayor had changed significantly since he was fi rst elected to council in 1995 when i fi rst got elected in 1995 the mayor was a day a week job plenty of functions to go to but it wasn t that busy he said the bar was really lifted when john bateman took over during the olympics and i think successive mayors have tried to lift that bar even higher every new thing you bring up is a legacy for the following year looking fresh faced and ready for the challenges that are ahead cr davies again pushed his desire for council to move away from focusing on broader state and federal issues i think we should be lobbying governments for things that we need but i don t want us to be in a position where we are taking positions on political views that are obviously going to go along party lines he said i just think that s a waste of time we are 15 equally elected councillors supposed to be looking after penrith federal politics has a representative state politics has representatives i really don t think it s the role of council to buy into g penrith mayor greg davies says council has been bogged down with issues it shouldn t have been concerned with [photo melinda jenkins those things certainly we should have an opinion and we should be pushing for stuff for penrith but we should be doing what we were elected to do which is to look after penrith cr davies is keen to see more jobs created locally believing there is something of a disconnect between locals and the community itself given so many have to travel long distances to work i think the greatest thing you can do to create a community is to create local jobs he said that means you have to go out and work your hardest to attract investment infrastructure transport solutions and traffic solutions he said if governments plan to put more people in regions such as penrith they need to follow it up with appropriate infrastructure and work opportunities cr davies said in-fighting at council needed to stop and declared penrith must get back on the map as a success story we had a position where our council was recognised as one of the leading councils in australia he said i think we ve lost a bit of that over the last three years and that s really disappointing i think we ve been bogged down on issues we shouldn t have been really concerned with online first see what greg davies has to say about `super councils at www westernweekender.com.au laser hair removal sale shops 151-152 585 high st open 7 days till late underarms bikini brazilian $19 $19 $29 australia s largest most experienced clinics laserclinics.com.au 02 4749 4902 1022wwd8111

4 opinion friday september 30 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk friday 30th sept 7pm sunday 2nd oct 9.30am no night service this weekend services troy dodds 3 we hate manly sure the silvertail days may be over but don t we all still hate manly just a little bit i mean they ll never be accepted as a battling team to have manly flying the flag for sydney in the grand final is akin to going on a date with your sister s best friend who just had her braces installed and is battling a serious pimple problem sure it s a date but not a very good one we know manly s history in the days before the salary cap silvertails or not they ll always be the rich boys from the north shore to us troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au 1022wwd3537 for kids see page 18 in fyi magazine cnr northern rd m4 orchard hills ph 4736 3000 inchurchpenrith.com 1022wwd7422 t word is plenty of manly fans have been at the passport office this week in an effort to ensure they can fi nd their way to anz stadium at homebush legally and without issues 5 manly beat us 70-7 it takes us panthers fans a long time to get over things we re still not happy about the 70-7 shellacking we got at the hands of manly back in 1973 the fact that it still ranks as penrith s worst ever loss gives us the right to still hold a grudge the warriors have no major records against us so they deserve some support 6 the kiwis are our friends we love to share a joke about new zealand folk most involving sheep but in the true aussie way that means we love them when the earthquakes happened in new zealand we chipped in like they were our next door neighbours we ve got plenty of kiwi friends living here in penrith in fact there s ex-pat galore and a few great players for penrith over the years have been from new zealand including tony puletua and current prop sam mckendry manly are not our friends very few people move from dee why to st marys very few people in dee why have even heard of st marys did i mention they beat us 70-7 once the warriors have never beaten us by that many points and hence remain good friends and hey they let us have their man ivan too enjoy your grand final day and your long weekend stay safe and keep your head screwed on while driving here s nothing quite like grand final day even if your team isn t involved it s always special when the season reaches its conclusion after six months of blood sweat and tears today we ve compiled the top six reasons why the weekender is backing the warriors to beat manly on sunday 1 ivan cleary is coming to penrith there is little doubt that phil gould s decision to leave steve georgallis in limbo and hire ivan cleary for the 2012 season at penrith has been vindicated cleary is proving himself as a master coach and gould a master decision maker after guiding the warriors into the season decider from sixth spot how good would it be to have a premiership winning coach coming to the new-look panthers next year also one should note the success of the warriors in the lower grades their toyota cup team has torn up their opposition all season and last week qualified for the grand final with a 64-0 shellacking of the bulldogs the nsw cup side the vulcans are also into the grand final clearly cleary s influence on the warriors at all levels is huge and he will be a great leveller for the panthers 2 they ve never won it there was a time when the warriors were the easybeats of the competition it was a time when some commentators actually called for the warriors to be dumped from the competition these days the warriors are proving themselves as a sensational sporting franchise in a country so often dedicated to rugby union the warriors are yet to win a grand fi nal and it is always special when you win your fi rst manly has already won six competitions tanya davies mp member for mulgoa can i help you how good would it be to have a premiershipwinning coach coming to the new-look panthers phone 02 9833 2913 address shop 1/159 queen st st whether it be for work sport or our entertainment yet we tend to be the ones who are criticised and maligned more than most i reckon we re more aware more in tune and more in touch than most realise 6 opinion friday september 30 2011 the western weekender dear weekender email penritheditorial@mediaview.com.au post suite 2 42-44 abel street jamisontown 2750 are we seems not given the opportunity to nominate the penrith regional gallery and lewers bequest for the state heritage register sharing more widely the wealth we have in abstract expressionism a unique property by a beautiful river and a garden that was once glorious most councillors voted not to support the nomination with this lack of support the heritage buildings the collection and the gardens are at risk adding an unnecessary layer of administration seems a small price to pay to have time stand still in one small beautiful place where birds used to sing artists worked and played and life was sweet judy burrett winmalee with more energy than the last but whenever mum complained about us little terriers playing up we always had the trump card bringing up her childhood she was a farm girl and with her brother one day she tried smoking for the fi rst time in secret in the shearing shed they coughed and spluttered put the cigarettes out and snuck out it was the perfect crime until the shed burned down mum said she was only smacked once by her dad as a child it was then and he made up for lost time the best i could manage during my childhood was breaking one of my brother s legs and another of my brothers breaking my arm we weren t a violent family we just loved footy and played it from brought to you by not good enough i refer to the article in the western weekender on september 9 concerning the penrith regional gallery lewers bequest it is disappointing and unbelievable that most penrith councillors have chosen not to support a nomination to list it on the state heritage register i understand this whole property was generously `given to the people of penrith with the understanding it would be managed and maintained by council not only would nsw state heritage listing bring prestige to the penrith area but also to the state of nsw i do not understand the reluctance by some council members to nominate this property for state heritage listing supposedly according to a spokeswoman penrith council take their responsibility as to heritage property seriously if that is the case they should stop being influenced by individuals who seem to have their own agenda and do not give any thought to the future generations judy joyce glenmore park missed opportunity it s all very sad isn t it once you re dead you re dead margo and gerald lewers visionary pioneers in the
