in our industry it s not uncommon to hear about a husband and wife corvette restoration involving hundreds of painstaking hours and much research we recently learned this type of passion also exists in the aviation world featured on our cover along with gerald childs s 1970 daytona yellow corvette is steve and deborah lund s kinner powered hatz custom built biplane when we say custom built we mean built by the kinner s from plans they purchased the inspiration for the project came at eaa oshkosh in 1980 for those not familiar there is an annual aviation convention in oshkosh wisconsin considered by many as the world s greatest aviation celebration the lund s project started in november of 1980 with the wings and ailerons the wings utilize a clark y airfoil and a 50 inch chord the plane was equipped with an 18 gallon fuel tank in the wing center section and a 5 gallon tank behind the firewall it took about a year to have the wings and ailerons ready to cover in november of 1981 steve began welding the steel tube fuselage as a millwright constructing the fuselage was second nature to him at the two year point the fuselage was setting on its tail wheel and main gear giving the lund s a false impression of being 90 complete after all how long could it take to complete all the detail work try 9 years kind of sounds like a corvette restoration one thing that extended the construction time was the addition of a radial engine giving the plane a vintage look they utilized a 540 cubic inch 5 cylinder-5 bore and 5 1/2 stroke 160 hp kinner r-55 steve equipped the engine with an 84 inch propeller with 85 inches of pitch the airframe was covered with stits hs90x and finished with dallas yellow and corvette gray stits aerothane the seats are covered in leather and deb did all the cockpit coaming leather work with deb s knack for running the numbers she handled all the calculations throughout the project when calculating the balance steve found he needed to place extra ballast in the tail to compensate for the radial engine steve made his first flight in september 1990 and all went well with only a few strut and landing gear modifications the kinner hatz cruises 100 mph at 1,700rpm and stalls at about 55 it has a wing span of 25 ft-4 in and a length of 19 ft the gross weight comes in at 1,650 lbs at the 1991 oshkosh event the lund s kinner hatz received the reserve grand champion in the plans category not satisfied with 2nd place they went back to work from replacing the fabric to the fuel lines they refined their hatz a year later they went back to oshkosh to seek the coveted prize in 1992 it was their turn to take home the grand champion lindy trophy on the cover c-1 c-2 c-3 c-4 1953-62 1963-67 1968-82 1984-96 catalog catalog catalog catalog 1959 1965 1970 1984 frost blue richard dunham silver pearl sherry keith fruchey daytona yellow gerald childs bright red paragon corvette www.facebook.com/paragoncorvette www.twitter.com/paragoncorvette www.myspace.com/paragoncorvette www.youtube.com/paragoncorvette follow paragon online v.36 2011 catalog production steven childs dave jones jay kincer josh langley ken bond anthony youngs neil wendt maria meyer kim nicol nicole tallman amber childs printing the john henry company distribution innovative computer services
