hello and welcome to the university of northampton as it says on the front this is a guide to the union for international students in the following pages we ll introduce you to the union and tell you a little bit about what we do and how you can get involved the union is here to develop and enhance the academic social and cultural experience of our members we represent every student that comes to the university of northampton that s you to the highest levels within our university come see me steve callum or pankaj in the union if you have any problems if you have course-related issues financial or welfare issues we are here to help or just pop in to say hello and let us know what trips and events you want us to run in the following pages you ll find everything you need to know about your students union and if you have any questions don t be scared to come in and ask us i wish you the very best of luck here at northampton and i m certain you ll love your time here see you soon tim president president bienvenue willkommen benvenuto bienvenido!

here for students what s a students union a union is an organisation that each university is legally required to have it exists to represent the interests of all students at the university what does a students union do simply put it represents students it does this by collecting student opinion on a range of topics for example how students feel about their course accommodation and overall experience at the university it uses this opinion to direct its own services and inform the university about what it provides what s a sabbatical officer a sabbatical officer is a student who has been elected by other students to represent them for a year the position is full time and paid and these officers typically take a year out from their studies to do the job this year the sabbatical officers are tim joaquim president steve durning vice president student experience callum wood vice president engagement and participation what s a part-time officer a part-time officer is also a student who has been elected by other students to represent them for a year the position is unpaid and part time and each part-time officer continues with their studies as they carry out the role this year the international students officer is pankaj lalwani.

hi my name is pankaj lalwani and i am pursuing my mba at the university of northampton as such in the context of the diverse ethnoculture environment of the university the position of international students officer means to me a true representation which will bring a voice to all students such as you and me i intend to help international students get involved in students union activities and arrange events where international students will get the chance to express their opinion on their university experience i would also try to make our students union as global as possible by facilitating integration between all our students i am passionate about student life and i wish that everyone s days at university of northampton should be some of the best days of his or her life the year 2011-12 is going to be exciting time for everyone i wish everyone all the best for an exciting stay at the university looking forward to work with you pankaj pankaj lalwani international students officer bienvenue willkommen benvenuto international students officer bienvenido!

the union at park park campus is the hub of the union s activities on the ground floor there is a welcoming reception where you can buy tickets and sign up for events a shop selling convenience goods and stationery and an office for the sabbatical officers central park also offers a variety of entertainments we show a range of live sport such as the champions league fa cup and cricket matches all sports are shown in high definition where available central park is the place to be between lectures or if you have a free moment we can provide you with free wi-fi and wii and there s also a pool table and games machine to keep you entertained upstairs there is the nn2 nightclub where weekly club nights take place lounge · bar · diner also on the ground floor is central park our daytime bar and catering outlet which has its own cash machine we have a great selection of hot and cold food at lunch times as well as drinks at competitive prices including fair trade tea and coffee tr a l n park ce new the union has also recently taken over the pavilion bar next to the leathersellers centre it s a lovely place to meet up with friends have lunch or take part in union events such as quizzes and karaoke.

the union at the union building on avenue campus is found towards the back of the site just past isham it has undergone major refurbishment this summer to improve the services the union provides there see the plan below a media area has been installed and will become a home to the union s newspaper nu news and radio station nu radio and the bar has been completely redecorated and updated it now includes two 55 inch 3d tvs it still provides the same high-quality food and drink at the same reasonable prices but in a modernised environment a range of entertainments take place at the union on avenue campus including live music and stand-up comedy as well as popular karaoke and open mic nights the sabbatical officers also spend time in the union building at avenue campus to make sure they are available to as many students as possible avenue

sport whether you have played a sport back at home or whether you want to try something completely new we have a sport for you sport is a great way to travel around other universities and represent the university of northampton a `stallions membership will cost you £65 and for this you have access to the following clubs · · · · · · · · · · · · · · american football badminton men s and women s basketball men s and women s cheerleading cricket men s dance football men s and women s hockey men s and women s lacrosse men s and women s netball rugby league rugby union men s and women s tennis trampolining we also have several new clubs for 2011/12 · athletics and cross country · boxing · rowing · squash · table tennis · volleyball each of these sports is individually priced please check out the freshers fair or website for more information did you know the bucs athletics championships are taking place in the olympics stadium in may join the athletics club for your chance to take part in the stadium s first ever competitive event all training is provided for more information about individual clubs and how to join please come to our freshers fair from 11am-3pm on tuesday 27th september at avenue campus students union and then from 11am-3pm on wednesday 28th and thursday 29th september at park campus students union alternatively visit the union website for more information.

trips events the students union runs the international students society.the society is responsible for planning trips and events for international students in the past year we have led a day trip to london and a four day trip to the lake district and scotland we re planning on holding many more events and running many more trips this year and would love for you to join us let us know where you would like to go and we ll see what we can do you can get in touch by emailing any of the officers or by popping into the union the union even has its own minibuses to help make trips happen we ll be attending the information fair at student services on 20th september and you can join the international students society there you can also join the society at the freshers fair 11am-3pm on tuesday 27th september at avenue campus students union and then from 11am-3pm on wednesday 28th and thursday 29th september at park campus students union scheduled events 21st september food and karaoke at the pavilion 23rd september disco at the pavilion 24th september trip to coventry football club for more information see the website or email vpep@northamptonunion.com we have a new member of staff who will focus upon running trips and events for international students they would be delighted to receive your ideas for future activities see www.northamptonunion.com for more details.

make new improve your knowledge of english culture and language friends if you are an international student studying at the university of northampton we offer you a warm welcome to the globe cafe and other activities organised by f.i.s.h northampton the globe cafe is held in the multi-faith chaplaincy every monday evening in term time from 7.15 ­ 9.15pm and is open to all regardless of race or religion.the cafe is free of charge and each week there are refreshments a cultural topic quiz or game and lots of friendly conversation we hope to see you there ­ drop in any time most weeks there is also an opportunity to play table tennis and other sports at the benham sports arena ­ a short walk away during the year we also organise special seasonal events and in the summer term a programme of outings to the local countryside fish northampton is organised by volunteers from local christian churches and our aim is to help you learn more about our culture and traditions make friends with people in the community and have a positive experience of life in the uk to join the fish northampton email list and receive regular invitations to local events and activities for international students email andrea.duncan7@ntlworld.com join us on facebook friendship international students hosts find us in `groups look out for our town centre treasure trail sunday 2nd october 2.30pm a fun quiz in groups introducing the history of our town followed by english afternoon tea free lifts to and from campus sign up via email as above.
