a joy for the city by caterina miraglia president fondazione campania dei festival the launch of this fourth edition of the napoli teatro festival italia has caused me not a little first night stage fright many difficulties have been overcome in getting this edition off the ground the installation of the new board of directors just a few months before the start of this edition passing the baton from the former to the present artistic director with luca de fusco having to face understandable dif culties in substituting in an on-going project a renowned and very demanding predecessor such as renato quaglia we have also had to deal with the rigorous accounting of the european authorities which have become very in exible indeed with the campania region the inheritance of a nancial loss which the new management has had to take charge of and which caused a real risk of bringing this initiative to an end the unfailing and predictable political bickering by those who for their own petty reasons have not hesitated to jeopardise the most important object of all and last but not least the latest in a long list of waste emergencies which put naples in a very dif cult situation indeed having to double its efforts to be taken into consideration as being a viable international cultural and tourist venue instead of hampering the project these seemingly insurmountable difficulties in getting this project off the ground have represented stimulating and challenging hurdles to overcome for both myself and the team of collaborators in creating this wonderful fourth edition of the festival aside from the indisputable cultural and artistic value of this event i believe that where we have got to today is already a very positive sign indeed the re-launch of the napoli teatro festival italia is vital in contrasting the image of both naples and the campania region as a place where ugliness is ingrained a closed and inward-looking territory unable to pull itself out of its present state and only capable of creating munnezza to use the local synonym for trash this edition of the festival is tangible even if redundant proof of the importance that the regional authorities under the guide of its president caldoro rst of all have attributed to the theatre and cultural sectors not by chance the inaugural event of the second part of the festival le maschere del teatro italiano will be the occasion to award a special prize to graziella lonardi buontempo the neapolitan patron of the arts and personal friend of andy warhol who recently passed away 6 www.napoliteatrofestival.it

as i have mentioned in other occasions this edition of the festival which is about to commence is the ideal occasion to bring joy to this sick and suffering city yes the sickness is there with its signs patently visible but there is no intention whatsoever to hide them we have to start from somewhere we need a catalyst to spark off a positive train of events which can bring together all those positive resources of our territory and its people vitality good sense optimism creativity and generosity with the risk of being considered a little presumptuous i believe that just for the fact that it has become a reality despite everything and everyone and with its organisation in place this edition of the festival can be the bearer of an often forgotten and obfuscated message with honesty effort and determination hard work can produce excellent results indeed www.napoliteatrofestival.it 7

a move towards an impure theatre by luca de fusco artistic director napoli teatro festival italia i have never liked classifying theatre into categories third theatre research theatre traditional theatre and so on on the contrary i would prefer to see a trend towards removing barriers in the performing arts sector my personal experience of this was with pina bausch s performances which still remain unforgettable memories for me as a spectator even in my current role as a director of prose theatre i trained in the north american school of visual theatre but even after this i don t think i could tell you if einstein on the beach by bob wilson which i saw in 1976 at the venice biennial was a prose dance or some other form of performance when you are placed at the helm of a festival four months before its opening you have to start piecing together a creative programme which cannot be anything else but impure due to the sheer work load of these past months i can t even remember some of the performances that we have included in this fourth edition of the festival what titles were chosen by myself and those chosen by my predecessor to whom i thank for his precious contribution the current festival team did this calculation and the breakdown is about half and half when looking at this year s programme i don t think that it is dif cult to identify the main theme which runs through the programme we shift from the sheer magic of lepage s theatrical cinema to the fantasy-like grotesque theatre of chouinard from the anglo-russian prose of the tempest we move over to the cinematographic theatre of pasqual this festival could be considered as a display of artistic contamination or perhaps it would be better to use the word cross-fertilization thus avoiding any negative connotation in which one artistic genre crosses over into another not by chance the performance l opera da tre soldi directed by myself is an example from the early 1900 s of music contaminating theatre and now presented in a traditional neapolitan sung style artists such as massimo ranieri or lina sastri already some years ago have taken this step in their careers by continually crossing barriers in their creative works if the italian performing arts sector had considered music cinema television as interconnected creative spaces like massimo and lina then we would all have bene ted much more even our environment performances set in innovative venues such as the underground ambience of the tunnel borbonico and the catacombs of san gennaro to the marine landscape of otello e iago and ferito a morte are ideal examples of theatre trespassing beyond its usual artistic boundaries and moving into new and hitherto little know realms i think that this crossing of barriers has the advantageous effect of revitalising the written word in all its forms from the classical literature of variazioni sul mito and the more surreal contemporary language of la tana by kafka or even shakespearean drama this innovative approach has also being applied to the great neapolitan novels of the post-second world war period of which we are celebrating the 50th anniversary and helps discover or even rediscover long-forgotten views of naples 8 www.napoliteatrofestival.it

i believe that the philosophy of crossing barriers to mix theatre with other art forms is the perfect choice for a festival there are many essential ingredients in the ideal festival a varied public a mix of linguistic styles theatre for niche and for vast audiences classical prose visual and dance performances i think that this year s programme is very appropriate with its mélange of performances held in uncommon locations such as the albergo dei poveri in classical theatrical venues as well as smaller ones and a few more esoteric works such as our environment performances i believe that we should not be afraid of consciously contaminating theatre by renouncing the ideal of purity or a theatrical essence and move more towards cross-fertilization with other art-forms but always with one constant in mind that of quality i believe that it is senseless to strive for an emaciated theatrical genre void of any relationship with other art forms we should consider the function of theatre as being a point of conjunction or locus where various creative pathways meet different languages or artistic genres such as literature and the visual arts are brought together again we have the example of l opera da tre soldi with its post-modern media-oriented scenography by the great fabrizio plessi or the anthological truth residing in the poignant work by ea sola or even the trespass of a pop artist like enzo avitabile into the realms of more serious music it is commonly assumed that a festival should compensate for the excessive normality of the classical winter theatrical programmes our festival does not intend to be an unconventional or alternative festival the current programme can be considered as being more inquisitive its performances are like doors and windows which open onto new horizons wider horizons than a usual theatrical programme this is also evident in the attention which we have given to contemporary dance which occupies a prominent role in this year s festival and which will be continued in next year s programme this year there has not been enough time to commission many new works but we have already made a commitment to give more emphasis to new dramatic works in the 2012 edition one should not be afraid of mixing different theatrical genres or bringing together culture and entertainment or culture and tourism this year we have tried to create a more solar and open-air festival and this will continue into next year in this year s festival we have made signi cant changes in the post-festival party which is no longer to be held in the prestigious but perhaps a little too solemn pan but in the exquisitely neapolitan setting of the borgo marinari our desire is that this venue will become the of cial festival village and contribute to the miracle of transforming a great city like naples into a smaller and more welcoming venue where one can meet spend time together and in general live a festive atmosphere in company www.napoliteatrofestival.it 9

on the subject of miracles i must thank all of those who have contributed in guaranteeing the continuity of the festival which i consider an integral part of the cultural heritage of both naples and of italy it has not been easy task and we are still struggling to plough ahead at a breakneck speed to make up for lost time in assembling a programme of events i believe that what we have done to date is admirable even if the product is different from previous programmes but personally i am proud of the work done so far we have also overcome administrative hurdles which had blocked the entire activity of the foundation and other organisational matters too the staff collaborating in this year s festival is also mixed with some people collaborating both in the present and in previous editions with some new entries to the team they have carried out their work ef ciently with a level of enthusiasm and dedication that only those with experience with working in a festival environment can understand i hope that this same enthusiasm dedication and energy be a clear and unequivocal sign of the end of the troubles that dogged the festival last year the people who have been involved in previous editions of the festival and who continue to be involved in this year s edition must truly believe in the importance of this initiative i think that it is of great importance to our community that the napoli teatro festival italia continue and be considered as an integral part of our local heritage going beyond the destiny of the individual or any single political party that from time to time may have any say in its future sadly the custom of considering the performing arts sector as belonging to one political party only is all too common in italy and brings no bene t whatsoever for the performing arts sector nor for the country nor for the politics of that same country in these past months the regione campania has given its support to the napoli teatro festival italia a tangible sign of its openness and intention to throw those useless barriers to the ground here we have further proof of mixing our slogan for the year 2011 10 www.napoliteatrofestival.it
