volume 1 issue 1 page 3 close to the counters surviving cooking in a 20 sq ft rv kitchen transitioning to life in a 31ft class c motor home requires a lot of compromise and a healthy dose of learning about what constitutes a need versus a want that`s a challenging enough task for most people personally but throw in trying to accommodate the varying viewpoints of kids teens as well as mom dad and you can imagine the marathon negotiations that can result except when it comes to the kitchen since for better or worse the kitchen usually remains under the absolute authority of mom you only have to negotiate with yourself but you will have to decide just how many wooden spoons you really need and you probably won`t have room for both of your crock pots or the fancy fluted cake pan that you use once every couple of years but don`t forget that you are expected to be able to create meals just like at home but with a heck of a lot less room and fewer cooking gadgets multi-use appliances become your best friend and if they are collapsible or unbreakable you may find yourself dreaming about them i believe it is possible to cook healthy most of the time meals that your family will want to eat in the typical rv galley the challenge is to find recipes that a don`t need more mixing bowls or cooking gadgets than you have in the whole rv and b don`t require ingredients that you have to buy in a specialty grocery store whole wheat cake flour anyone so that`s the goal of this column to share shortcuts recipes and unexpected gizmo finds that will make life easier in the kitchen this month i`ve been exploring different uses for the resealable plastic bag the ultimate in easy cleanup using plastic bags once in a while can be a fun break for everyone below are a couple of recipes to get you started quick easy fudge overs put a pot of water on to heat to boiling depending on how many omelets you are cooking this can be a medium saucepan or a large stockpot a medium saucepan will cook 2 omelets a large pot will generally have enough water and room for 68 omelets nothing says you can`t put your saucepan or stockpot on the outdoor grill to boil the water if the weather is cooperating crack 2 eggs large or extralarge into each sandwich-sized ziploc bag not more than 2 smoosh shake to combine them each person adds whatever extra ingredients they want to their bag and continues to mix it up make sure to get as much air out of the bag and zip it up you don`t have to get every last molecule but if a lot of air is left in the bag the possibility exists that it may burst while boiling place the bags into rolling boiling water for approximately 1012 minutes using tongs remove the bags from the boiling water and place on plate cut open the bags watch for steam and the omelet will roll out easily for a pdf file with more resealable plastic bag recipes just send an email to me at the address listed below and i`ll forward it on to you pam her husband mike and teenage daughter sarah recently made the move to full-time living in an rv while exploring the united states and canada they are currently working their way across the southwestern states of arizona nevada and southern california you can contact her at rvkitchen@fulltimefamilies.com prep time 20 minutes ingredients delicious and easy ziplock omelets lets everyone be their own chef 3 oz package of cream cheese 2 to 2-1/2 cups of powdered sugar keep to the lesser amount if you are in a dry climate more if it is humid 1/2 cup of cocoa 3 tablespoons of softened butter 2 resealable storage bags 1 quart size 1 gallon size want a free subscription to fulltime families we are offering the first 100 respondents a free six month subscription go to fulltime families.com for more information hurry while supplies last preparation place all ingredients in the quart ziploc-type bag close and put it inside the gallon zip lock bag alternatively you can use 2 gallon size bags we just found it a bit unwieldy with 2 large bags give everyone a turn at squishing the bags to mix mix until smooth about 10-15 minutes if you want to add nuts or chocolate chips now is the time to add them squeeze mixture into an 8 or 9 inch square pan and spread to desired thickness putting it in the refrigerator will harden it up more quickly enjoy ziploc omelets prep time 15-20 minutes this is a fun way to get the kids involved in putting breakfast together preparation put out a variety of ingredients in bowls such as cheeses ham onion mushrooms salsa whatever your family might like in their omelet this is a great way to use up various left-

page 6 fulltime families the mod man installing a back up camera system on your trailer one of the most challenging aspects of driving a travel trailer or 5th wheel is backing up a camera system comes in handy for day-to-day towing driving backing up into your campsite or even just seeing where other vehicles are on the road with you with a camera on your tow vehicle you can now hook up to your travel trailer or 5th wheel without guidance from another person i personally know this has saved my marriage on numerous occasions this article will detail how to pick a system build a camera box mount the monitor into your tow vehicle mount two cameras one on the tow vehicle and one on the trailer connect the cameras and create a toggle switch to activate each camera when choosing a camera system there are many options to consider such as night vision monitor zooming widescreen color camera display and foot marker lines some high-end radios dvd gps combination head units come with camera outputs if you already have this equipment there is no need to purchase a monitor because the camera will interface directly with this setup i would also suggest that if you plan on purchasing this type of integrated system you may want to have a dealer install this product in your tow vehicle as it can get very involved then come back to this article to install the cameras yourself later for those who are interested in the basic setup here`s how it`s done there are two other kinds of monitors on the market today one is a stand-alone monitor that can mount to your dashboard by velcro two sided tape or screws the other style monitor hangs from the existing rear view mirror in your tow vehicle i recommend the stand-alone because it allows for more placement options not all camera units are created equal i do not recommend the wireless cameras due to the clarity and signal loss you will encounter from the rear of your tow vehicle to the cab where the monitor is installed i have also found that the license plate cameras have a tendency to capture moisture and yield poor video quality i suggest using a name brand product such as pyle audiovox or sanyo these systems generally come with the monitor cutting tool for the camera mount and one camera although they do sell cameras that are already installed in sealed boxes this article details how to build your own enclosure for added piece of mind all of these items can be purchased from your local radio shack or equivalent store supplies wire cutters butt connector crimpers philip head screw driver 50 ft of 18 gauge power wire 2 2 position 12 volt switches only one needed if not installing second camera butt connectors blue in color butt connector rings blue in color self taping screws bolts and wing nuts optional see step 3 under preparing the cameras washers electrical tape wire ties electric or cordless drill drill cut out tool size varies depending on camera some of them come with the tool when you purchase the camera 1 composite video splitter not needed if only installing 1 camera 2 composite video to video extenders female to female only 1 needed if installing 1 camera 1 50 ft composite video cable yellow plug 2 project enclosure boxes 6x4x2 only one needed if not installing second camera 4 small l brackets only two needed if not installing second camera clear calking the first thing to remember before installing this system is that it is not difficult there are a lot of parts involved but they all plug together and no real modification is needed to your trailer or tow vehicle in these instructions assume you are installing 2 cameras preparing the cameras 1 take the 2 project boxes and cut a hole with your drill through center of the box cut both the front cover and the back of the box for perfect alignment keep the cover on the box while drilling through both sides 2 insert the camera into cover of the project box through the hole tighten the camera holding screw that was supplied with the camera so the camera is secured in the box feed the camera wires through the back of the box and add some caulking to the edges of the cover for the project box this will help keep moisture out put most diesel pushers and class c motor homes come with these handy gadgets so why should 5th wheeler and travel trailer owners have to sacrifice this convenience now you don t installation is not difficult and should only take about three hours from start to finish install some eyes in the back of your head for greater piece of mind.

volume 1 issue 1 page 7 camera installation continued the cover on the box and tighten the screws down repeat steps 1 and 2 for the second camera 3 using the l brackets mount them with 1 screw on each side of the project boxes this will provide an up and down swivel motion used to aim your camera you can substitute screws with wing nuts and bolts for this part so you can easily tighten or loosen the brackets on the side of the boxes for ease of adjustment trailer camera wiring 1 from the back of the trailer run the single 18 gauge power wire to the trailer battery run the 50 component cable at the same time but this wire will need to run to the front of the trailer find a good spot to hide the wires attaching to the under frame with wire ties stay away from the trailer brake wires so you do not interfere with their use by accidently disconnecting or cutting them 2 crimp on a ring butt connector to the wire on the end near the battery but do not connect to the battery yet 3 run the ground wire from the camera to the frame of the trailer try not to extend this ground if you can a better ground is a shorter ground crimp on a ring butt connector to the ground wire use self-tapping screws and a washer to connect the ground to the frame drill a small pilot hole in the frame so that you can get more leverage on the screw 4 use one of the 2 position toggle switches and cut the power wire you ran to the switch the switch cannot be exposed to weather so install this in either the battery box or in the trailer just remember that both ends of the wire will be connected to the posts on the switch it doesn`t matter what wire connects to what post just as long as each of the two wires are on separate posts the switch will be used to turn the camera off when your trailer is parked you can leave it on all the time but it does draw minimum power from the battery if left in the on position mounting and connecting the camera to the trailer 1 now that all the wires are run connect the camera mount the camera on the trailer with self-tapping screws use the calking and calk the screw holes on the trailer 2 connect the composite video cable to the camera by plugging the male end of the cable to the female end of the camera video lead 3 connect the power wire to the camera using the blue butt connectors and then connect the ring butt connector to the battery on the trailer by using the screw from the battery terminal that holds the terminal down to the battery 4 go back to all of your butt connectors and use electrical tape to wrap the connectors this helps to keep moisture and dirt out of the connectors tow vehicle monitor wiring 1 mount the monitor in the tow vehicle using the provided hardware this would include velcro screws or two-sided tape 2 run the wires from the monitor to power and ground of the tow vehicle you will need to take the power wire and connect it to a switched power in the tow vehicle i suggest using the radio remote turn on feature or radio switched power on wire cut the wire and using the blue butt connector crimp the two wires together 3 locate a ground for the monitor and mount that by crimping it to the radio ground or to a ground directly on the vehicle chassis if you choose to mount on the chassis crimp on the end a ring butt connector using a small drill bit start a pilot hole and then using the self-tapping screw mount the ground wire 4 run the composite video cable from the monitor to the rear of the tow vehicle this will connect to where you mount the camera run the cable out of the vehicle via the firewall grommet and down the engine compartment then run the wire under the vehicle using wire ties to tack the wire in place again avoid the break lines and this time the fuel lines 5 connect the composite wire splitter to the composite video cable to the rear of the vehicle connect one of the composite video extenders to the splitter tow vehicle camera wiring 1 mount the camera on the tow vehicle i recommend mounting it on the license plate frame or on the bumper so it will be out of the way from the tailgate rear door tow vehicle camera power wiring 1 from inside the tow vehicle route an 18-gauge power wire from the power you choose on the radio to the rear of the vehicle where the camera is installed 2 using the 2-position switch connect the switch in between the power lead for the camera and the power cable that you are splicing into this will be used to turn the power off to the tow vehicle camera and will allow the video to pass to the monitor from the trailer 3 ground the camera on the tow vehicle to the chassis crimp the ground wire with a ring butt connector and mounting using the selftapping screws drill a pilot hole to make it easier to mount the ground connecting the camera s to the monitor 1 connect the composite video cable to the camera by plugging the male end of the cable to the female end of the composite video splitter 2 go back to all of your butt connectors and use electrical tape to wrap the connectors this helps to keep moisture and dirt out of the connectors using your new camera system you are now ready to connect your trailer and get video from the new camera using the camera in the tow vehicle back up using the camera and connect your trailer in your tow vehicle flip the toggle switch that turns off the vehicle camera you should now have a blank screen get out of the vehicle and connect your composite video cable to the extension cable on your tow vehicle turn on the power switch in the trailer to on in the vehicle the monitor should display the image from the rear of the trailer for trailer disconnection just reverse the procedure chris travaglino the mod man is also the fulltime families webmaster if you have any questions about this or other rv modifications send him an email at support@fulltimefamilies.com.

page 8 fulltime families the crafty camper scrappy trails to you a great way to preserve your on the road adventures is with scrapbooks there are two main considerations to scrapbooking on the road space money and did i mention space although scrapbooking bags are available i suggest a black and red rubbermaid collapsible rolling storage cart it can be folded almost flat when not in use this is a great multipurpose gadget and works wonderful for my scrapbooking supply box i operate under the rule if it won t fit in the box i don t need it for scrapbooking the standard size scrapbook is 12 x12 which i found to be too expensive and bulky so i opted to work with regular size paper and a 3 ring binder to create my books to save money and space do you see a trend i do not develop all my pictures instead i transfer them to a flash drive when i m ready to scrapbook i just plug in the flash drive choose the pictures i want to use and print them out on my printer then i plug the flash drive into my digital picture frame and we can enjoy them all the time do you use your computer in scrapbooking i sure do i use the print shop program to create many of my pages and edit pictures i also my own stickers i print out the clipart place it on the double sided sticky foam pieces and i have a truly unique page the campground registration office is a great place to find attraction pamphlets adding portions of these to your scrapbook allows you to cut down on journaling and helps to incorporate great information into your book i use clear cellophane to make my pockets for these leaflets this way if you just slide the leaflet out of the pocket you can still see any picture or background through the cellophane sara thayer is also our campground reviewer sara her husband and daughter travel fulltime if you have any questions or other brilliant ideas you can contact her at cgreview@fulltimefamlies.com are you a crafty camper if so we d love to hear your tips on hobbies on the road send suggestions to info@fulltimefamilies.com check out the happy janssens touring the country powered by veggie oil check out their blog and see when the live lightly tour will be in your area when trouble shooting save time energy and expense by following tom s advice simple to hard ask the expert i ve got power but some things are not working yesterday everything in the rig worked fine unfortunately when we arrived at our next site not everything worked the rear heat pump was working fine but the front just clicked the next morning we didn`t have any hot water odd two failures at the same time unlikely so i looked at our incoming power and noticed we weren`t pulling power on both legs there are a few possibilities when power is only coming in on one leg a poor connection at the post shows voltage but not enough copper to drive the load one leg is dead the transfer switch has a stuck contact a wire is loose somewhere within that leg there are no loads on that leg simple to hard i`m a firm believer in tackling the easiest problems first so i went out and checked the connection at the post the connections were clean no corrosion and the box felt tight i.e the plug didn`t fall out so the post appears fine on the outside as does the post-end of the cable next i checked the connections inside the power bay a couple more plugs to verify and they were fine too suddenly a thought struck me if it`s a stuck contact on the transfer switch maybe forcing it to select another source will free it up hmmm how can i get another power source the generator a.k.a genset with the heat pumps off i started up the genset after a few seconds the transfer switch flipped power to the genset in lieu of shore power after a couple minutes warmup time i turned on the heat pumps viola both worked perfectly i shut off both heat pumps and gave the genset a few minutes to cool then i shut down the genset and tried the heat pumps success not only were the heat pumps working again but our water heater was back in business on electric it was a good morning i hope this helps someone avoid what could be a costly service call for a simple fix our expert tom smythe is an ibm systems administrator who works and travels with his family full time on the road check out this and other articles at www.bizpost.com if you have a question for tom you can email him at expert@fulltimefamilies.com playing with fiber original crochet patterns custom crochet orders.
