our relationship with the environment what is formaldehyde in 2006 tumidei spa was awarded uni en iso 14001 certification this a voluntary environmental management standard used by tumidei spa which proves the company s deep respect for the environment and its commitment to protecting natural resources correctly using raw materials and saving energy in order to care for the environment and natural resources within its energy cycle tumidei spa uses wood shavings and production scraps to produce thermal energy which is used inside the company to meet internal needs all these schemes concern issues which are taken on board with increasingly stronger awareness by public opinion and individuals tumidei spa is also sensitive to these issues hence its investment in resources and technologies with an environmental impact involving its products operations and services tumidei spa has manufactured a 700 kwp solar panel system covering a total area of 11,350 square metres which will directly supply solar powered electricity to the production plants in order to meet over 70 of the company energy requirements with zero impact on the environment we work with we work with formaldehyde is a colourless irritant gas with a pungent odour which affects the eyes and the respiratory tract it belongs to the volatile organic compounds voc class and within this class it is one of the more common indoor pollutants formaldehyde is a very versatile compound which explains why it is very widely used it is used in the most diverse industries to produce raw materials such as synthetic resins insulation adhesives paints paper fabrics therefore it can be found both in offices and at home in wallpaper in the plastics contained in furniture in carpets and fabrics health hazards being highly soluble in water formaldehyde can easily cause irritations of soft tissues it comes into contact with it therefore affects the eyes the nose the throat and the respiratory tract eye symptoms include redness conjunctivitis and swelling of the eyelids respiratory tract symptoms include irritation bronchial hyperactivity and asthma acute intoxication occurs when accidentally ingested whilst skin contact can cause dermatitis exposure to formaldehyde can also affect the nervous system causing tiredness anxiety migraines nausea drowsiness or vertigo furthermore the international agency for research on cancer iarc has found formaldehyde to be carcinogenic for humans formaldehyde furnishing during the production of furniture adhesives and other materials are used which contain a significant quantity of formaldehyde to avoid furniture being produced with a high concentration of formaldehyde new laws and regulations have been introduced which specify maximum levels of emission tumidei spa complies with applicable standards on formaldehyde to check formaldehyde emissions we have mounted the arrangement in the picture inside a 22m³ chamber to detect the emissions of harmful substances this chamber suitable to simulate the actual room your child sleeps in has allowed us to ensure that the quantity of formaldehyde released by tumidei spa products is in line with national and international standards and regulations all this relates to laboratory tests carried out in compliance with standard uni en 717-1:2004 wood-based panels determination of formaldehyde release formaldehyde emission with the chamber method water paints with reference to law decree of 10 october 2008 our product datasheet wood-based panels and furniture made with such panels both semi-finished and finished products containing formaldehyde cannot be sold if the formaldehyde balanced concentration that these products release in the surrounding air as specified by the provisions of article 3 paragraph 1 exceeds the value of 0.1 ppm parts per million or 0.124 mg/m3 tumidei spa certifies that the formaldehyde emission value is the product datasheet compliant with law
