4 opinion friday september 23 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk troy dodds guard this week at penrith city council with greg davies taking the mayoral robes after things got very interesting in relation to the so-called secret deal that was left in tatters following marko malkoc s expulsion from the liberal party greg is a knockabout bloke who has quite often placed himself above the party politics that can sometimes dominate one s thinking more importantly greg has always been so proud of this city and so keen to see penrith shine in his previous tilts as mayor he s proven himself as penrith to the core there s nothing to suggest anything will change this time around troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au 1021wwd3527 a 9.30am family service 6pm night service 1021wwd7422 police and over-the-top political correctness before but at some stage you have to show some sort of respect for the office ms gillard holds the show seems to think it s extremely funny that tim mathieson used to be a hair dresser it s not in a society that constantly complains that our politicians are not living in the real world it s somewhat extraordinary how quickly we criticise someone who has experienced day-to-day suburban life pauline hanson and her fish and chip shop days is another example of obsessing with a politician s `normal background the drama earlier this week over an intimate scene in the show involving julia and tim draped in the australian flag again brings into question the credibility of the abc the decision to produce the show in the fi rst place and what overall point the program is trying to make history will most likely show that ms gillard was a weak prime minister who was at the helm when some extraordinarily bad decisions muddled policy and gamechanging decisions were made but a dumbed-down unfunny tv show is not helping the cause whether you love her or hate her changing of the guard we saw an interesting change of the a dumbed-down unfunny tv show is not helping the cause whether you love her or hate her is this a movie sport can sometimes be so remarkable that you would think it is scripted the amazing fairytale of darren lockyer continues with his field goal against the dragons in extra time last week adding to the remarkable run of special moments in his fi nal year in rugby league but at the high point of the movie lockyer went down injured cue the dramatic music the whole thing could not have been scripted better and as much as the sydneysider inside of me would much rather see the manly colours flying high i think every league fan would like to see lockyer go out a winner let s hope the broncos win tonight to give lockyer a shot at a premiership farewell brisbane do it so well still on sport and how remarkable is it that queenslanders keep turning up to major events time and time again there was almost 50,000 at the semi fi nal last weekend and crowds like that have been consistent all year for the broncos the origin crowds were incredible and the city also turned out to support the triumphant queensland reds in their rugby union premiership success as well as brisbane in the a-league soccer it just wouldn t happen in sydney and let s finish with some fun the press release of the week award goes to this beauty an australia wide survey by popular social dating community zoosk.com has found about the noise the festival also continues to have a bigger issue that being one of drugs the fact that all festivals of this kind have some drug issues shouldn t be an excuse to accept that it just happens some would question why we as a city should continue to agree to be the playground for this event 81 people were issued court attendance notices for drug possession six people were arrested and charged with supplying a prohibited drug 275 people were treated for drug and heat related illnesses there is a huge economic benefit to this event and opinions will always be split but at the end the western weekender friday september 23 2011 news local 5 1021wwd7468 uitar factory penrith store owners gary monger and mike mitchell are warning retailers to keep an eye on their stock following an incident where two men tried to steal a $2,500 guitar from their shop around 11am on monday september 12 two young guys walked into the shop together and one struck up a conversation with one of our staff members explained mr mitchell the other went into one of the rooms at the opposite end of the store and picked a guitar off the storage racks and sat down to play it looking at the security cameras it is obvious the two were trying to distract staff so they could steal a guitar the man playing the guitar waited for a clear moment and then bolted out of the store with the guitar he was playing in tow fortunately the store has an alarm every time someone enters or exits the store and the staff quickly caught on to what was happening the staff member who was working at the time saw the thief turn into lethbridge street and ran after him there were people working on the side of the road who pointed in the direction the g man had run in mr mitchell said the thief had dropped the guitar in long grass and was hiding behind a car when he was approached the man denied knowing anything about the guitar and then fled the scene mr monger said it was fortunate that the guitar had not been damaged and that police are continuing their inquiries into the incident coming up to christmas is a precarious situation for retailers because there are a lot more shoplifting incidents retailers need to keep their eyes on their stock and watch who enters and exits their stores mr monger said the men are described as being in their 30 s 170cm tall and caucasian one was of medium build wearing blue jeans and a white and blue jumper whilst the other was skinnier and wearing jeans and a backpack anyone with information about the two men or who saw suspicious activity in the vicinity of castlereagh and lethbridge streets on the morning of monday september 12 should contact penrith police via crime stoppers on 1800 333 000 if you see a story unfolding make sure you let us know about it call 4722 2998 or email penritheditorial@mediaview com.au gary monger almost had a $2,500 guitar stolen [photo melinda jenkins please contact store for details 1021wwd5275 1021wwd5263

6 opinion friday september 23 2011 the western weekender dear weekender email penritheditorial@mediaview.com.au post suite 2 42-44 abel street jamisontown 2750 mainly for political advantage some very well meaning and patriotic australians have been vilified and called racist for daring to have an opinion about the people that have been allowed into this wonderful country these patriotic australians like myself were not consulted on the issue of which races of people were likely to assimilate more readily and who we would be comfortable living alongside our elected representatives told us that they knew better and multiculturism was wonderful and yes most of the migrants have done well but there are people who have been allowed to come to australia legally or illegally that are here for no other reason than to change what we enjoy and take for granted these people have an agenda that includes introducing ancient laws and forcing restrictions upon us which history has shown brings unrest and confl ict look what is happening in the north of england and most of the european countries multi-culturism is imploding incidentally i have a 1951 oxford english dictionary that has served me very well and it does not have the word racist in it peter townsend penrith we are supposedly an intelligent fi rst world country yet for some reason there is a significantly increasing number of men who think it s okay to bash their wives/partners girlfriends in some cases to the point of death what is wrong with these people in the headlines just this week was another case where wests tigers star robert lui was alleged to have beaten his girlfriend it s the second time in the last 12 months he has been charged with assaulting his partner in the last incident where police were called she was pregnant and he was cleared on the previous charges you also have the likes of actor matt newton who has been convicted of punching a woman he supposedly loved and then there s afl legend wayne carey brought to you by missed opportunity it is indeed a disappointment that penrith city councillors at their september 5 meeting rejected the opportunity to support the listing of the lewers bequest and penrith regional gallery on the state heritage register western weekender september 9 the argument that such listing would introduce another layer of bureaucracy is rather paltry given this is the one and only council owned heritage site in a multimillion dollar enterprise significant benefits accrue from state heritage listing not the least being that the external state heritage council beyond the local politic with its peculiar drivers and priorities can set and monitor heritage preservation and conservation requirements without fear or favour a chance to secure the future of this wonderful and unique site has been lost the current council may well have the guidelines and management plans in place to look after the site but councils come and go and with them their plans and guidelines we must ensure this key heritage site is not only recognised but preserved for future generations by continuing to press for heritage listing peter gilchrist springwood the your say write to the editor hospital praise thank you for printing the praise letter about nepean hospital emergency department on page 4 western weekender september 16 too often praise is put at the back of the paper david jurd via email there are certain things in life that confuse me beyond all comprehension and none more so than domestic violence yet the latest figures in nsw show it is the most rapidly increasing crime in the state and then there is this statistic which just leaves me dumbfounded 40 per cent of homicides in nsw are attributed to domestic disputes th ink about that for a second who on a bender in miami in the us decided to glass his girlfriend wayne carey received a slap on the wrist and is now back to being lauded in the media while matt newton had his conviction quashed only to again allegedly bash another girlfriend an incident over which he s never been charged by police there comes a time when someone has to put the foot down and the nrl has an opportunity to take a very strong lead here if and i stress if robert lui is found guilty on these latest assault charges he should be banned from ever playing in the nrl again some may call that harsh but an example needs to be made we simply cannot have a generation of children growing up and thinking violence of this sort is in any way acceptable peter overton tom steinfort the faces of
