ohaupo school is big on speeches our principal sue has always fostered a culture which values the teaching and learning of how to write and present a speech in fact over the years our school has become well known as a school that produces quality speech makers which is great from a marketing and `pride in your school point of view more importantly it is essential to speak well to take away the terrible phobia many people have about public speaking to feel capable and confident is good for a child s self esteem and to be able to express an opinion in an articulate manner is empowering in interpersonal relationships there are many times in life where we are required to speak well job interviews committee meetings giving presentations speaking at weddings and funerals and in so many career fields we have found that children who have been at our school since they were 5 years of age and began their speech-making journey then do not have the same fear and nervousness as say a child who gives their first speech at 12 or 13 years of age last year whilst sue mclocklan was away i might add kerry and i took on the organization for the waikato full primary school s speech competitions as well as the lower waipa speech competitions therefore we have four speech nights at our school two weeks ago we had the ohaupo school speech competition 9th september this week we have the waikato full primary regionals 22nd september the finals of the waikato full primary speech competition 29th september and then the lower waipa speech competition on 1st november it is a huge investment of energy by our school but one that i think has a life-long positive impact on our children the winning is not the only the only goal it is the changing of confidence for life a card from the overall winner of ohaupo school competition dayna george summed up her journey beautifully `from an f grade to a and i hope she will not mind me sharing her comment a few minutes after winning i never thought a kid like me would win a competition like that thank you so much to the judges from te awamutu toastmasters and indeed toastmasters from all over the region as well as others who helped prior to and on the night your time and expertise was much appreciated if you do want your child to improve their public speaking why not come along to one of the winners nights on the dates mentioned above this
