thinking way before the existing lucrative yet mindbogglingly thoughtless development took place there i m thinking way back circa 1893 chicago world s fair period might have been right helpful police i attended the wonderful little farmers market at queen and woodward avenue on sunday there were loads of neighbours there buying fresh food and chatting and generally everyone had a good time by now you like mr daniel burnham in chicago then would have long ago achieved your spectacular goals and everyone d still be singing your praises as dear old muddy york/toronto would have grown and prospered due to your innovative for then ideas there d be a statue of you in the harbour looking jolly like you do and giving a wave and a wink to lady liberty over the way there and but for that statue it would all be history i wish it were your plan speaking of plans we have some please remember this these plans and the decision-making that brought them about are really when you think about it not yours to mess with i hear the spoon in the gravy pot or some rich related sauce stirring and it is an annoying sound as you know/knew for liberty s sake if new plans are going to made you need to consult k ching if you got together with some other bright lights i know we would get some interesting and achievable plans to make the best of this warm disregarding some days in winter and lively would like to take this opportunity to say a few words in support of tassels which the dictionary describes as a tuft of loosely hanging threads or cords attached to various items such as scarves in the days of my youth they were also attached to the woollen caps worn by young girls in the school i attended and many s the time my young buddies and i would snatch the caps off their heads and throw them into the nearest snowbank the irate young ladies would retrieve the items and then proceed to throw us into the snowbanks but this is a fact that is never discussed at school reunions now you may be wondering where this is heading and indeed on many occasions so do i but after rummaging about in my notes here is the connector just about the only place one sees tassels nowadays is on the corn sold at food stores near the family home on queen street imagine my dismay when i discovered on a recent shopping trip in the queen and lee area two food stores with bins of de-tasseled corn for sale i m not sure if de-tasseled is a word but i kind of like the look of it one does not shear the flow ing mane of a horse one does not shave the flowing beards of our ancestors and i say one does not shear the tassels from corn and subject them to ridicule from customers as they pass by the bins in the food section corn helped build this country and the least we can do is leave it properly clad when it is seen in public if this trend continues are shopkeepers going to paint our good canadian red cherries different colors in a bid to lure passersby onto their premises will celery stalks be tricked up with circles and dots or will carrots be made to look like barber poles these are questions that need to be addressed and by ginger mrs cochrane s little boy is just the guy to ask them meanwhile as i wait for answers to bubble to the surface other matters have arisen and it is time to focus my attention on them in a move that i am sure will positively transfix music lovers everywhere i am pleased to announce that i am learning to play the ukulele or ukelele take your pick but leave me out of the argument that is all i ask there doesn t seem much to the actual playing you just sit there and strum near as i can tell but what do you call the person who is playing the instrument ukeleleist ukelelezer somehow don t sound quite right but i am willing to consider any suggestions i would like to point out however that submissions such as throw the thing out of the window and take up knitting will not be seriously considered and besides the wife has already put that one forward speaking of wife-related matters i wish to point out that a man is not fully assembled until he is married there are rough spots to be knocked off and we must be trained to respond to specific commands such as get your head out of the fridge you re spoiling your dinner and that leads me to one of the truly great mysteries of life how can a wife who is toiling away in the attic know with absolute certainty the very moment that the husband has in truth just stuck his head in the fridge if your circle of friends happens to include a behavioral scientist don t bother asking him that one because he doesn t know either the fact is chaps we will never understand our wives and other opponents and when everything is considered it is probably just as well.

beach gta and beyond for 10 years bottoms up pisco national drink of peru if you ve ever been to south america i m sure you ve come across pisco this pure brandy-like spirit made from grape product through the distillation process packs quite a punch my first introduction to it in the southern hemisphere many many years ago resulted in my doing the lambada on a coffee table with a lampshade on my head need i say more about its potency at around 40 alcohol by volume this elixir can sneak up on you before realization gets anywhere close to kicking in both chile and peru produce this spirit however peru seems to have perfected the art instead of utilizing a continuous or column still like chile peru uses a copper pot or lambic still similar to how cognac and armagnac are made resulting in a product with more character the peruvian model is produced only in ica lima arequipa moquegua and tacna the name comes from the port of pisco in southern peru from which it was exported during the spanish colonial period beginning in the 16th century allowable grapes include quebranta torontel moscatel italia albilla uvina and negra criolla common black after fermenting for 18 days the resulting wine is distilled and then rests for a minimum of three months in glass copper or ceramic jars it is then bottled without any additions in peru four different kinds of pisco exist some are made from non-aromatic grape varieties such as quebranta common black mollar and uvina these tend to be focused with varietal character es specializing in hors d oeuvres and party platters edward finstein a.k.a the wine doctor wine writer educator judge consultant 416-269-7963 winedoctor@sympatico.ca www.winedoctor.ca pecially if made from one variety if you re not used to drinking spirits the alcohol can come across a tad aggressive those made from aromatic varietals like italia muscat albilla and torontel are fragrant elegant products with lots of floral fruity complexity those made from a blend of both non-aromatic and aromatic varietals are known as acholado these can be really interesting combining distinct varietal character with lots of fragrant overtones mosto verde or green must pisco is made from partially fermented fresh grape must unfortunately there s not much opportunity to taste pisco here in north america with this in mind mirems ltd and piscobar of lima peru formed piscobarcorner here in toronto this year to introduce ontario palates to the pleasures of peruvian pisco peru s piscobar is the sole pisco-only bar in lima and is a very popular location founder and chief mixologist ricardo carpio whose passion and enthusiasm for pisco is infec gift certificates are always available private and corporate tastings available upon request tious was on hand at a recent tasting to introduce several piscos to this market the four premium brands he featured were torre de la gala cholo matias tres generaciones and campo de encanto the torre de la gaia acholado was floral pear-like and delicate the italia from the same producer was equally delicate with green pear and apple notes the cholo matias acholado one of my favourites possessed lots of perfume and floral notes while the same producer s torontel was somewhat similar with less aromatics and more nutty corn-like nuances campo de encanto quebranta was spicy and robust the tres generaciones acholado was deliciously harmonious and elegant and the mosto verde from tres generaciones displayed aromatic elements but was a touch hot aside from sipping pisco straight up there are numerous cocktails that highlight its unique character try a pisco sunrise with orange juice and grenadine syrup a pisco collins with lime and club soda a tuna pisquirina with tuna fruit lime juice and cane syrup or la joya cocktail with pinot noir and ice of course there s always the infamous pisco sour with lemon or lime juice egg whites simple syrup and bitters so if you re keen on experiencing the national drink of peru in all its glory give pisco a go just remember to sip cautiously agent in ontario for the abovementioned brands is piscobarcorner contact andrew machalski at ·15 sept 20 2011 child 9/16/11 1:04 pm page 1 tuesday september 20 2011 beach metro news 15 on the child side confessions of a unrepentant techno-mom will confess i am one of those people who spend an insane amount of time on my blackberry every day ask my christine editor i took her out to lunch and she yerrill practically had to pry it out of my hands so i could eat my meal while it started as a business tool i use it now for everything from the grocery list to managing a hockey team to the family calendar and just in case my boss is reading this i definitely use it for work definitely work most of all some nights my thumbs hurt i have become technomom however i think that i am for the most part still able to communicate with my fellow mankind without this aid when the circumstances require it i spent the first 40 years of my life without the ability to text anyone and if necessary could give it all up our kids are not so lucky they have grown up with parents who could reach each other on cell phones from the time they understood what any type of phone was fisher price put the first mock cell phone in their hands and they ve never looked back i recall the horror my husband the rational one showed when i gave our grade seven aged son a cell phone rationalizing that he would be travelling to and from school on the ttc and `needed one what if he needs help i explained to him he ll be able to call us the rational one snorted at me what he can t yell help and run like the rest of us technology in the hands of a kid that age is a bad idea he warned i try not to say this very often but he may be right the teenager s reliance on these devices was never more apparent to me than when in a moment of dr phil-type discipline last week i decided he would have to do without his cell phone for a day it was the consequence or to use old school terminology his punishment for displaying a total lack of respect toward his brother you would think however i had suggested he give up food for a week his eyes reflected the panic of a deer on the opening day of hunting season he sputtered he stammered but but but mom you can t how will i find my friends at lunch hmmm i thought how will he find his friends at lunch then i gave my head a severe shake and got a grip innocently i suggested perhaps you could make your arrangements before classes start as to where you ll be eating today what he screamed apparently in high school it is totally uncool to speak of anything in advance of it happening respect · resourcefulness · responsibility i planning for instance is uncool being in the moment is all that matters one must only do things as they are bbm ed otherwise you might look desperate okay my second suggestion to just wander down to the lunch area and find his friends was greeted with similar outrage there is no wandering around in high school either one must travel with purpose in a pack of identically clothed friends appearing nonchalant and unconcerned while concurrently bbm ing about what else might be happening in other places with other identically clothed friends i tried a third suggestion which i thought was obvious just look around to find your friends i was summarily rejected again and was out of suggestions he would just have to figure it out dr phil and i were standing firm the blackberry was suspended for the day i respectfully submitted that every time he thought about texting that day and discovered his device missing he should remember that he also needed to treat his sibling with respect horrified and defeated he headed out the door to day three of high school techno-naked i m sure he had some choice words about me to share with his pals i felt a little sick about it and marginally hypocritical clearly my own techno-addictions had started him down this path perhaps the rational one had been right all along technology in the hands of teenagers is bad bad bad the good news is the message not a text message got through to him and our teenager did show a great improvement in the days following in his behaviour toward his brother life without his blackberry was painful enough to create behaviour change it turns out dr phil s advice on how to address teenage issues was quite sound i really should text him and tell him so fully accredited montessori program full-day casa 2 years 8 months 5 years
