week 6 term 3 wednesday 7th september 2011 www.isleworth.school.nz what s happening 2011 9 sept 12 sept 15 sept 16 sept 28-30 sep 6 oct 7 oct 25 oct 2 nov 4 nov 11 nov 15 dec kia ora koutou waiho ma te tangata e mihi let someone else acknowledge your virtues i appreciated having the opportunity to attend the icp conference in toronto canada it had an impressive line-up of international education experts and provided a forum to examine what is happening in education outside of new zealand there were government ministers of education from many countries not our minister debating educational policy and direction our presentation was well attended with principals from across the world wanting to hear more about new zealand s educational success story they all stated how far we are ahead of what is happening in their countries the direction that new zealand has taken over the last 10 12 years with a progressive teaching philosophy backed up by a world class curriculum along with a focus on high standards and expectations in literacy and numeracy and supported by ict is a direction many countries want to take some asian countries want students to be allowed to be creative and to benefit from personalised learning this is quite a change from their regimented knowledge based learning and exam focus of the recent past they realise that for their future economy to flourish then their future work force needs to be creative and innovative and to do this education needs to be flexible and to allow children to think self-manage reflect and to take risks interestingly some western countries usa and england have been going in the opposite direction over the last 15 years with a regulated curriculum and high stakes testing which in both countries have proven to be a failure it is interesting that we are a part of an education system that is thought of as a world leader by colleagues from across the world but i wish that this was acknowledged more by our government and the media scooter park a reminder that we have a scooter and skateboard park located just behind the senior block this is for all children to use it is locked at 9am and unlocked just before 3pm children often forget their scooters and leave them at school i frequently pick them up after school or in the weekends and store them in the office for safe keeping please encourage your children to use the scooter park and also ensure any bikes in the bike stands are locked recently we had a group of teenagers enter the grounds just after 3 and attempt to steal a scooter this was after they had been to another local primary school and stolen a bike welcome to our university of canterbury teacher trainees for this term amber maclachlan in room 2 reana instone in room 6 charlotte gardner in room 7 zoe gower in room 8 dina brinkman in room 9 michaella luxton in room 10 emma clark in room 11 and tj allison in room 13 welcome to dianne walker who is teacher in charge of our learning centre mini concert in school hall 11.30 am kapa haka and choir cultural concert senior speeches book offer closes year 5/6 camp school photos term 3 ends term 4 begins grandparents day disco school athletics term 4 ends loohcs ht r o w el si taem it l ufr ednowae va huoy epo h .21 moor ot yargrelyt e m o cl ewew next pta fundraiser spring is coming time to have that big clear out and make some money at our school car boot sale which will be held in november sites will cost $15 per car more information to follow principal
