tuesday september 6 2011 beach metro news 5 taking the glitter out of gold by bill maclean price of gold hitting record highs as of this writing it was more than $1,800 an ounce one might think that this would be a good time to be in the jewelry business but as i found out recently for all but one of the beach s local jewelers it has had the complete opposite effect it has all but destroyed the sale of gold jewelry items such as bracelets chains and earrings said gord edwards of edwards davies jewellers 2834 danforth ave 416-6987880 cathy kwok who runs perfect jewelry in shoppers world danforth told me business is going down the jewelry business is in big trouble all over canada admitted fred jakob of form craft fine jewellery 1885 queen st e 416-691-1253 only brothers enrique and sergio morguet who own and operate morguet jewelers 1918 queen st e 416-416-6988404 said that they see their business actually pick up during recessionary times we re selling our label said enrique morguet who with his brother has run morguet for 27 years the store does most of its work in sterling silver but enrique said that 50 of their custom work incorporates gold usually gold supplied by the customers in the form of old jewelry edwards also contends that current styles are as much to blame as the skyrocketting price of gold for the downturn in gold jewelry buying it s not fashionable to wear layers of gold chains à la mr t anymore he said people are keeping their adornments more simple a wedding band a watch maybe a fine pendant but that s it jakob says it s the continual pounding of television and radio spots telling people that now is not the time to be spending money that is to blame he told a story of a woman who had picked out a beautiful necklace in his shop but her husband vetoed the purchase claiming that he had been told not to spend on luxury items morguet agrees when he said that his customers like to be careful what they spend their money on these days jewelry is for when you re happy said jakob recalling a customer who would come in and buy his wife a piece of jewelry just because he had been having a good day and wanted his wife to share it with him in some way not many people are buying these days said kwok both edwards and jakob were quick to say however that it is the bridal business that is keeping jewelers like themselves in business these days the bridal industry is the industry edwards said emphatically it s what s keeping this industry viable bridal jewelry consists mostly of diamond rings and their settings edwards said that people will often have their diamonds reset when styles change it s made up for everything a recent story in the moneyville section of the toronto star highlighted the risks and benefits of selling your old gold jewelry as gold soars what s your jewellery worth aug 23 mentioning high-powered television ads by such personalities as russell oliver and harold the jewellery buyer we don t buy used jewelry said cathy kwok neither does fred jakob they bring in everything from home and 80 of it s costume jewelry he said edwards doesn t either but did recommend that people interested in selling should go to two or three places and not take the first offer do any of these local jewelers think that gold has reached its peak i was telling people to sell when it hit $1,100/oz said edwards but look what happened enrique morguet said that the price of silver although not as high as gold has nonetheless increased more in value percentage-wise silver has more than quadrupled in price in the last few years he said it has gone from $8/oz to $48/oz does anyone foresee a time in the near future when the price of gold will go down enough to get people back in the stores buying jewelry again as soon as the us gets its financial house in order and the stock market recovers we may see the price of gold come down said edwards everything is complicated there are no simple answers fred jakob has a different take on the problem this is a consumer society he says if we don t spend money the economy stagnates and stagnant the jewelry business in the beach has become said jakob you re the first person to come through those doors in four days advertisement toronto ey this industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today s market the fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers dont get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and worse financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market as this report uncovers most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars the good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable in answer to this issue industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled the 9 step system to get your home sold fast and for top dollar to hear a brief ·06 sept 6 2011 9/2/11 12:33 pm page 1 6 beach metro news tuesday september 6 2011 in my opinion with or without jack we must hope and love in the corner of my bedroom is my father s cane in the final months of his battle with cancer it became necessary but it was also used with such an ease and often to great comic effect it became an extension of him so i have kept his cane near i think this is why my favourite images of jack layton are those with his cane jack in some respects reminded me of my father they were vigorous proud and handsome men but when the cancer stripped them of that and left them leaning on canes it exposed to any who had not yet seen them matthew kellway mp beaches/east york spirits so sweet and strong that our sympathies were awakened and we were made to love them everybody knew jack of course so much of his life was public and so it seems over these past months that every canadian came to know his spirit as he lived out his life so beautifully courageously valiantly propped up by his cane and so it seems every canadian has wept over his loss ever since jack announced that he had prostate cancer i wanted to share with him my father s story cancer killed my father but my father triumphed in the only battle as it turns out in which he had a fighting chance the battle within over how he would live for the time he had left in the terms that jack left us my father chose love over anger hope over fear optimism over despair it was a faith that always threatened to slip from his grasp as it is bound to do in the face of death but that rested firmly within his embrace when death came it was a beautiful life he lived and a noble death as was jack s but into the mystic went jack and my father too and we are left without them but it doesn t didn t end there of course what follows such lives is a restoration for those who witnessed how they lived and died we are strengthened in the knowledge that if others can go to their deaths with such a faith then we at least can live by it so as i once pressed on with my father in my heart so it seems now that all of canada me included will do the same with jack i believe that the measure of us as a country and certainly of me as an mp will be to what purpose we use our new strength if we are not to despair and how can we now with jack in our hearts then we are confronted with the most fundamental of political questions what do we do how do we organize ourselves for the common benefit in his letter to us jack pointed the way we must organize our collective life around love and hope we must be generous beach metro community news published by ward 9 community news inc is a non-profit non-partisan community newspaper founded in 1972 and published 22 times a year it is issn #0838-2956 letters to the editor when the black stallion galloped past her window i am dropping you this note with regard to the photo on page 11 of the may 17th issue this photo taken during the filming of the black stallion practically jumped off the page at me in 1979 i was a teller at the td bank which is now lion on the beach with the seaway meat market on the other corner my teller wicket faced kenilworth which was all windows allowing me to watch all the excitement while i attempted to work it was definitely a challenge to keep my mind on the job when you have a horse running by the window every now and again until they got it just right a moment in beach history thanks for the memory marlene noble school bus was parked on windsor avenue to take advantage of the shade offered by two large trees on a day the temperature reached 33 degrees a note suggesting that the bus was not welcome on the street would have been enough to have it located elsewhere as the driver is aware of such hostility and does attempt to park it at different locations each day however a hero came forward with a more immediate solution he removed the valve from a front tire which deflated the tire and rendered the vehicle unable to move as some residents may be misinformed here is a fact small school buses like this may legally park on residential streets including windsor avenue check it out with the police or a parking enforcement officer while this incident was a minor inconvenience the hero in his impatience didn t think of the possible consequences of his actions had he not been strong enough to pull the valve out all the way he might have only weakened it or otherwise damaged it and it could have failed on the highway and caused major injuries or worse to a substantial number of campers these are children of good people like the people of windsor avenue parents take their kids to work with them and they are picked up at a location downtown and taken to camp via highways like 401 and 404 tampering with any vehicle s ability to operate properly is dangerous and is an extremely stupid thing to do as far as the police are concerned no need to worry for now the young male officer at the front desk was more interested in two skimpily clad blondes who were dropping off some new kind of refreshment drink samples but who can blame him it was only a flat tire he did say however that if there was surveillance or witnesses the police could do something especially since the valve is still wrapped in the green duct tape that he used and probably has his fingerprints on it however the likely scenario is that nobody saw or heard anything like the code of silence in some other toronto neighbourhoods the overnight parking ticket was a nice touch too this bus is never parked overnight on residential streets except on this occasion when it had been disabled by the hero well done hero well done your neighbours must be very proud of you name withheld by request kingswood road i was wondering what that meant well on the morning of july 28 i found out i got pulled over to the side an officer came over and told me in an authoritative voice there are no right hand turns off victoria park ave before 9:30 a.m slightly shocked i politely told the officer i did not come down victoria park and turn right i came up victoria park stopped at the stop sign and then crossed over to bracken however the officer kept repeating that he definitely saw me turning right coming down from victoria park i guess in his opinion i was lying the police officer did not relent and thus i became an innocent victim of one officer s careless work i was given my yellow ticket hopefully i will be cleared but the whole incident was frustratingly humiliating do i now have to change my route to avoid this happening again livia thoeny queen street east ticket for not turning i am a retired teacher and a grandmother who taught here in the beach area for some 29 years when i retired 17 years ago i took up quilting as one of my favourite hobbies so every thursday and friday morning i drive up victoria park from queen where i live cross over to bracken avenue to reach kingston road via scarborough road in the last few weeks i have noticed that the police were regularly pulling cars over at bracken and hero of windsor avenue the recent parking of a small school bus on windsor avenue seems to have offended someone s sense of importance on july 12 during the day a small

this area s storied athletic history it doesn t have the smash-mouth reputation of three-down football or six-person hockey but on the other hand participants need clear eyes steady hands and a willingness to take a gamble i am talking generally about the sport of lawn croquet and specifically about the tournament which is being held sept 17 on the landscaped grounds surrounding the gardener s cottage which is located at the foot of lee avenue the setting is appropriate because all profits created by the event will be directed to a fund established to raise money for the general upkeep of the building more information on this wonderful event is available on page 24 so keep that date open because it promises to be a fun happening for the entire family a load of baloney and speaking of fun happenings sturdy gert mccurdy is back in town with her latest love interest a man of confused countenance named baloney bob pickersgill baloney bob was not at his best during the visit mainly because i sturdy had rendered him unconscious with a blow to the forehead during the course of a friendly game of whist at the local legion hall as a result he was quite content to sit quietly in the corner while sturdy regaled us with details of her latest foray to the far north where she had been invited to adjudicate an icicle-throwing contest in the town of knuckles she arrived smack in the middle of a scandal involving the mysterious disappearance of 500 pounds of blubber from the town freezer and naturally she was invited to spearhead the investigation it was the easiest case i ever solved she told us later i took the principal suspect into a secluded part of the forest and pummelled him with a series of left and rights to the rib cage and i got a confession in no time at all this set off a wild celebration and sturdy was guest of honor at a bonfire held in the town square unfortunately the bonfire was set next to the pile of icicles intended for use in the icicles-throwing contest and this led to another dust-up the icicles melted of course and organizers told sturdy there was no money to pay her and she was free to go home whenever she wanted she was vexed no end by this turn of events but she solved her problem by taking the treasurer into a secluded area and launching a series of rights and lefts to his abdomen this caused the poor man to see the error of his ways and as a result she received her money plus a handsome performance bonus which he paid out of his own pocket sturdy always did have a convincing way about her once back in town sturdy took baloney bob on a tour of the town showing him architectural highlights such as the horse trough and bailey s saloon where the town council meets very second wednesday rain or shine she also introduced him to her many local friends and he does seem like a pleasant fellow although you can t make much sense of what he says until his jaw heals it seems it was broken during the course of a discussion with sturdy he also seems to be missing a tooth to two which has left him with a slight lisp which the townsfolk find quite appealing so i guess everything works out for the best sturdy and her new best friend are embarking on a world tour soon and i hope to have some great stories to pass along when they return parts of glen stewart ravine to close by phil lameira the city of toronto along with the toronto and region conservation authority has commenced a project aimed to restore many areas of the glen stewart ravine some of the things to be accomplished over the fall 2c or email to admin@beachmetro.com bottoms up the skinny on wine competitions i think most people would agree that if a bottle of wine one is considering purchasing wears a decal saying it won a gold medal in a competition one would be more inclined to buy it and why not since our school days we have been hung up on grades the higher the grade or in wine s case the score or medal supposedly the better for producers medals won in competition and displayed on labels are great marketing tools all wine competitions cover one or both of the following categories varietals cabernet sauvignon chardonnay etc and wine styles bubbly sweet wines blends etc some are regional product from a specific region within a country national product from an entire country or international product from around the world the odd one focuses on value for the dollar like within a certain price range or occasionally on food-friendliness most competitions are judged by a group of folks in the wine industry usually from different areas winemakers wine journalists wine retailers wine educators wine scientists etc this way different perspectives of wine all play a part in the final analysis sometimes these judges come from different parts of the world especially important in international competitions where wines are entered from all over the globe once the judges are chosen they are usually divided into panels so not every panel/judge will taste every wine entered a tedious and unrealistic concept at the best of times each panel edward finstein a.k.a the wine doctor wine writer educator judge consultant 416-269-7963 winedoctor@sympatico.ca www.winedoctor.ca is set up to include a judge from different areas of the industry to bring their unique perspective to the analysis all wines are served blind the only information provided the judge is generally the wine style/grape variety and vintage all marks of a panel are averaged out and a corresponding medal awarded in some instances before a panel s final overall mark is awarded a wine the members will discuss the wine so that if any one judge is out in left field with it an adjustment can be made plain and simple a wine competition is only as good as the judges doing the evaluation because someone is in the wine business doesn t necessarily make him or her a good judge a solid understanding of wine much experience with tasting all grape varieties/wine styles a good palate and consistency are essential many competitions invite judges based strictly on their reputation position public persona or celebrity status certain competitions actually test their gift certificates are always available private and corporate tastings available upon request judges beforehand to make sure they have what it takes to do the job there s even the odd competition that continuously tests their judges throughout the competition by giving them the exact same wine at different points throughout the judging to see how consistent their analysis are in international competitions where wines come from all over the globe representing varying winemaking styles a judge s global tasting experience is especially important most new world not europe judges usually have access to wines from all over the world on a regular basis so they are very familiar with international and regional styles and varietals just look at all the choices available to you from all over the globe at your local lcbo european judges are not as fortunate in most european countries you d be hard pressed to find any other countries wine available other than the country you re in unless judges from these countries travel a lot one would have to wonder how adept they are in evaluating international styles and varietals as they are rarely exposed to them this is one reason why international judging panels are set up to include a combination of old and new world tasters a final aspect of wine competitions to note is the number of wines entered in a specific category a gold medal won in a competition where only 10 wines were in the running in a specific category may not carry the panache of one obtained where there were hundreds.

worth of groceries the penny but end up paying only $5.47 i watched one re saver cently and was absolutely blown away but realistically i m not turning my basement into a storeroom or giving up my day job in order to do the organization required to assemble all the needed coupons for that kind of savings but i do count my pennies at the grocery store in less dramatic but still effective ways every saturday morning i get my coffee and the bag of flyers that is delivered to my doorstep on thursday night see what s on sale and in which store i pay more attention to sale items for the stores that i regularly visit it has to be a really good deal for me to bother driving all over to different stores gas and time for `running around shopping needs be assessed one good example is when we go to a chinese grocers to buy pure pomegranate juice for $2.50 a litre instead of $10 when we make that trip we buy a case of 12 and also pick up a few other things that are on sale that makes the trip well worth it the coupons i use are offered at the entrance to the grocery store i frequent this stop is also a good time to put on the eye glasses needed for shopping depending on what deals are offered i might alter my shopping list this particular nation-wide store chain loblaws takes coupons from its gas bar the gas is generally two cents less than everywhere else plus it gives back two cents on every litre pumped that can be applied towards your groceries effectually that makes your gas four cents cheaper than everywhere else with my store coupons in hand and a very flexible shopping list basically `something to eat i keep my eyes open for those pink stickers that signify markdowns i used to be afraid to buy the reduced meat until a farmer/butcher friend told me that the aged cuts were the tastiest so now when we visit the store i purposely look for the 30 off stickers on meat if we are not eating it that night it goes directly into the freezer friday night is our steak night and my husband always picks out a tasty 30 off rib eye for us on friday morning produce usually located on a separate rack in the produce department can be bought at 50 off use the produce quickly or save it for making soup and while you are saving money don t forget that baked goods are often discounted by 50 as well if only they were 50 calorie reduced too this is our friday morning treat at my work i pick up danishes or muffins depending what is available for half price not one person has ever said they weren t fresh enough for them when discussing saving money grocery shopping costco must be mentioned it is famous for offering good deals and great quantities of food you do have to pay for a membership but the people who go there swear by it i am not a costco member because i know i
