piedmont arts annual report 2009 ­ 2010 exhibits the 2009 ­ 2010 season brought the vivid colors of nature into the galleries with a traveling exhibit from the smithsonian institute called transitions photographer robert creamer blended technology nature and art in a unique exhibit of large scale images taken by arranging specimens above or on top of a scanner in the box mezzanine gallery technology architecture and memory were the stars in inscribed spaces a collection of computer generated images by kim beckmann in september piedmont arts celebrated mardi gras across the globe with a multi-media exhibit called ¡carnival that dazzled students and visitors of all ages to ring in the holiday season piedmont arts offered an extensive array of ceramics wood glass baskets and metal in classic crafts curated by john and judy matthews this exhibit featured works from master craftsmen and artists from across nation in honor of black history month imogene and isadore draper generously shared their impressive collection of african american art with museum visitors and students these exceptional works on paper by notable artists including jacob lawrence faith ringgold martin puryear and elizabeth catlett inspired thoughtful exchanges about culture education history and humanity when spring arrived piedmont arts participated in minds wide open virginia celebrates women in the arts with art jam an exhibit featuring six artists from blacksburg virginia this exhibit included fiber jewelry sculpture painting and mixed media works curated by director of exhibitions tina sell to end the season piedmont arts and the lynwood artists presented expressions 2010 this judged exhibit awards 33 cash prizes annually to local students and artists and is a favorite event for community members and visitors the lynwood artist gallery which is curated by the lynwood artists showcased local and regional artists jan atkins from mt airy randy sweatt from martinsville the artists at studio 107 art studios for piedmont arts iris gillispie from collinsville and daniel robertson from reidsville nc the foster gallery formerly the young artist gallery featured student works from every city and county school the works were collected and installed by volunteers from the charity league of martinsville and henry county during expressions the healing arts exhibit showcases work created by artists enrolled in art therapy programming with piedmont community services classic crafts on stage for nearly two decades piedmont arts on stage has brought entertainment from around the world to southern virginia and this celebratory year was no exception international bluegrass music awards entertainers of the year cherryholmes opened the season with their hard-driving sound and explosive vocal harmonies followed by the harper lee s classic tale of dignity tolerance to kill a mockingbird this performance is a part of piedmont arts the big read a project sponsored by the national endowment for the arts and the institute of museum and library science in may motown legends cornell gunter s coasters the platters and the marvelettes offered a blast from the past students tour transitions with classic hits like smoke gets in you eyes and please mr postman then came the annual holiday hijinks of david wiley and the roanoke symphony orchestra and chorus this performance again helped grace network to collect canned goods for those less fortunate finally the season came to a toe-tapping end with the lively irisih jigs and step dancing of cherish the ladies celtic celebration a

performance held in conjunction with minds wide open virginia celebrates women in the arts education from carnaval to fairy tales piedmont arts brought a host of fun-filled educational events to the galleries and local schools ¡carnaval family day took kids and parents on a treasure hunt through the galleries to learn how different cultures celebrate carnaval kids decorated cookies ate delicious king cake and made colorful masks to take home ¡carnaval family day was held in conjunction with the child and nature initiative s outdoor fun festival at j frank wilson park a short walk from the park and the virginia museum of natural history guests were free to walk between these great events brass 5 a musical quintet from roanoke va visited rich acres elementary albert harris elementary axton elementary irisburg elementary carver elementary and campbell court elementary in october as part of piedmont arts educational outreach programming the group performed why music a program that explored the role of music in everyday life kid pan alley singer­songwriters kathy hussey and paddy dougherty returned to martinsville to host workshops for ten classes at patrick henry elementary school in january students learned to write original songs which they performed in concerts for the school and community theatre iv a professional nonprofit theatre group from richmond performed the play snow white and the seven dwarfs for students at local schools in november over 1,200 students from stanleytown elementary collinsville primary sanville elementary and mt olivet elementary were treated to theatre students create scanner photographs inspired by the work of robert creamer in transitions cherish the ladies iv s performance of this classic fairy tale theatre iv s musical adaptation of grimm s classic featured a script with lovable characters portrayed by an ensemble of live actors and wonderful puppets students followed along as snow white met her pint­sized friends took the apple from the evil queen received a kiss from the prince and lived happily ever after this faithful rendition of the fairy tale was designed to inspire young audiences to read the original tale special events a yearly staple savory september again brought the the area s finest cooks to piedmont arts for a tasting of delicious foods from countries that celebrate carnaval over 125 guests attended with mardi gras beads and masks in tow word­beat performed a multidisciplinary salute to langston hughes in the piedmont arts galleries in april the free performance featured popular collaborators charles williams and tom teasley s homage to hughes lyrical mastery kids sport freshly painted masks at ¡carnaval family day

in february piedmont arts announced participation in minds wide open virginia celebrates women in the arts a statewide initiative honoring contributions by women to arts and culture the program included thousands of special events and programs offered between march and june of 2010 exhibits and on stage events were planned to honor this initiative as was a special performance by the richmond ballet choreographed and performed by women a rainy april didn t keep a crowd of over 450 people from attending a concert featuring the waybacks at shining star farm the californiasavory september ¡carnaval before it hit the national stage the piedmont arts audience was treated to a sneak peek at the ballet s newest repertoire which included dances based group brought an eclectic mix of bluegrass jazz classical and soul to the stage they performed covers of old favorites and original songs americana duo doug and telisha williams opened the show accompanied drummer pedro vasquez and local surgeon tom berry on organ and accordion they performed songs from their album ghost of the knoxville girl which was recorded locally in berry s studio the group s blend of heartache ballads and hard-driving honky tonk tunes quickly had guests on their feet word-beat financials where we get the money contributions membership corporate gifts grants/foundations city and county program revenue fundraisers investments other 5 3 21 5 21 2 9 8 25 how we spend the money programming 68 management/general 28 fundraising 4%
