what an exciting year for piedmont arts we brought five thrilling performances to martinsville high school as part of our on stage series and over twelve exhibits filled our galleries in celebration of black history month piedmont arts presented crowns portraits of black women in church hats and legacy for the generations as our januaryfebruary exhibits with the diligent help of board and community members these exhibits became some of the year s best attended by offering the opportunity to showcase the crowns of local ladies in conjunction with these exhibits piedmont arts created a oneofakind display that was a true highlight in the galleries in 2008 piedmont arts became one of 208 organizations to receive a grant to host the big read an initiative of the national endowment for the arts in partnership with the institute of museum and library services and arts midwest the big read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read discuss and celebrate one of 23 selections from american and world literature the big read in martinsville and henry county focused on to kill a mockingbird by harper lee over 15 big read activities took place in our area from march 1 31 2009 the program was a great success which saw fantastic community support piedmont arts hopes to participate in the big read again in october of 2010 focusing on the works of edgar allen poe 1 interim executive director joe williams poses with a guest at the piedmont arts special event performance of the paschall brothers on february 15 2009 as i look forward to the upcoming year i anticipate the fantastic exhibits and events we have planned make sure to watch for our mailings and enews to find out more about what s happening in the months to come at piedmont arts we strive to bring highquality affordable programming to martinsville and henry county and we hope that you will continue to support our mission remember piedmont arts and many of our events remain admission free through the membership support of people like you joe williams interim executive director from the director

2 nature s survey and the tree was happy · lynwood artists gallery july 11 august 23 2008 throughout history artists have been drawn to the natural world for inspiration attracted as much to its beauty as to its awesome power artists have also sought to capture the complexity of nature attempting to render objects in perfectly detailed forms contemporary artists still draw upon the natural world for materials and many reflect interests similar to those of their predecessors in turn the artists in nature s survey focus on elements from bones to animals seeds to leaves found in nature and like many they convey a sense of beauty and wonder animal human spirit dreaming of the stone country no artificial ingredients by sam davis · lynwood artists gallery september 5 october 25 2008 animal human spirit showcased a selection of pottery and other works from the uva art museum s precolumbian collection uva s collection includes works from a wide range of precolumbian cultures including the maya the viscus culture of peru and those of western mexico dreaming of the stone country featured eight paintings by kunwinjku artists from oenpelli in the northern territory of australia exhibited on loan from the klugeruhe collection the paintings depict ancestral stories from western arnhem land the works were commissioned by john kluge in 1991 this style of painting resembles rock art that was produced in the region and dates back thousands of years visitors examine work by suzanne stryk at the opening reception for nature s survey the art of the quilt works by the virginia foothills quilters guild · lynwood artists gallery november 7 december 27 2008 quilt artists from all over the southeast are invited biannually to display their work in the piedmont arts galleries curated by linda fiedler works exhibited in this colorful aweinspiring show represent all aspects of quilting during each exhibit visitors enjoy the creative side of quilting and discover how quilts are not only practical textiles they re art crowns portraits of black women in church hats legacy for the generations veiled series works by brian counihan · lynwood artists gallery january 9 february 21 2009 spurred from the book crowns by photographer michael cunningham and journalist craig marberry this exhibit examines the africanamerican custom of church hats cunningham s photographs beautifully capture the selfexpressions of women of all ages using stories marberry provides an intimate look at the women and their lives together they ve captured a captivating custom this wearing of church hats a peculiar convergence of faith and fashion that keeps the sabbath both holy and glamorous exhibitions

in 1941 while living in new orleans jacob lawrence began a series of gouache paintings focused on the life of the abolitionist john brown more than 35 years later the artist revisited the series to produce a limited edition portfolio of 22 handprinted screenprints this historic set of prints was featured on loan to piedmont arts through the virginia museum of fine arts by richmond virginia collector derrick johnson its travel is supported by the jessie ball dupont fund theatre of the sky close to home · lynwood artists gallery march 6 april 18 2009 twentytwo contemporary japanese kites flew high over the piedmont arts galleries during theatre of the sky created by contemporary kitemaster mikio toki each kite depicts the face of famous kabuki actors f rom a 19th century woodblock print renowned kite and print collector scott skinner commissioned toki to recreate this classic print on a collection of traditional tokyo kites theatre of the sky was organized by the drachen foundation of seattle washington a private educational nonprofit study center devoted to the increase and diffusion of knowledge about kites worldwide 3 david spear a 1992 recipient of a guggenheim fellowship has photographs in the permanent collections of museums across the nation including the museum of modern art in new york the new kabuki kites fly high over the piedmont arts galleries during theatre of the sky orleans museum of art and the museum of fine art in houston his exhibit t h e neugents close to home features black and white photographs chronicling the lives of spear s tobaccofarming neighbors the neugents in madison north carolina expressions 2009 may 8 june 27 2009 offering an eclectic mix of styles and media expressions is one of the most popular events in piedmont arts exhibition schedule presented by the lynwood artists and piedmont arts this open-entry juried art exhibit features work by local and regional artists last year over 120 artists participated and 35 awards were given.

4 on stage performances cherryholmes saturday november 8 2008 cherryholmes has become america s new first family of bluegrass the grammy nominated 2005 international bluegrass music awards entertainers of the year thrilled the on stage audience with their harddriving sound and explosive vocal harmonies featuring a mixture of original songs and classics roanoke symphony holiday pops maestro david santa wiley and the roanoke symphony orchestra and chorus returned to martinsville for the third year with their magical holiday pops spectacular over 100 musicians and singers brought the spirit of the season to our community and grace network again collected canned goods before the show to stock their pantry for those less fortunate the spencers theatre of illusion sunday february 8 2009 there s magic and then there s spencer s theatre of illusion by combining original theatrical elements with cuttingedge illusions special effects music and stagecraft the spencer s elevated the age-old art of magic into the realm of inspired awe kevin spencer even defied the laws of gravity to an escape from a water-filled container like the legendary houdini to kill a mockingbird tuesday march 31 2009 montana repertory theatre one of the most outstanding touring companies today presented the stage adaptation of to kill a mockingbird harper lee s classic tale of dignity tolerance and unequal justice this performance was part of the big read a project sponsored by the national endowment for the arts and the institute of museum and library science cornell gunter s coasters the platters and the marvelettes friday may 15 2009 motown legends cornell gunter s coasters the platters and the marvelettes offered a blast from the past that got audience members out of their seats the groups performed classics like smoke gets in you eyes please mr postman searchin twilight time and only you on stage special events

8 the clyde hooker award is given annually in recognition of the significant contributions individuals and businesses make to the arts and culture in martinsville henry county and the region this award is named for local businessman clyde hooker to honor him for his long time support of the arts and for improving the quality of life for the entire community this year piedmont arts honored pat featuerstun for volunteering her time as a gallery hostess and staunch supporter of the arts and arovik signs whose owner rocky cobler graciously donates vinyl signage for every piedmont arts exhibit the arts in education award is given in appreciation of educators who demonstrate outstanding efforts to bring piedmont arts into their classrooms and who bring their classrooms to piedmont arts the 2009 recipients of the clyde hooker award lr pat featherstun and rocky cobler of arovik signs pose with their awards however hard the piedmont arts education staff might work to create programs for the schools in our community we cannot bring these offerings to the students without the cooperation of the administration and faculty of the individual schools we are fortunate to have that support for arts education in our area the harold knowlton work memorial scholarship was established by his wife julia ascough work to continue higher education studies in the visual and performing arts this year s recipient was michael shelton the recipients of the 2009 arts in education award are from left sally rodgers principal at sanville elementary natasha rowell principal at albert harris elementary sherri lewis principal at mt olivet elementary and joan montgomery principal at patrick henry elementary the nicodemus hufford memorial scholarship given in honor of the late portrait artist is awarded annually to applicants who plan to pursue a degree in the arts this marks the 21st year that this scholarship has been awarded to students from martinsville and henry county this year s recipient was demarco king 2009 work scholarship recipient michael shelton left and scholarship presenter kevin lewis awards scholarships

community partners are a vital part of piedmont arts these groups use piedmont arts as a meeting place help to spread positive feedback about our organization around the community and provide valuable input as to what community groups and members would like see in our galleries and on stage 13 lynwood artists lynwood artists is an organization for practicing artists in the piedmont area their members share a desire to stimulate understanding and enjoyment of fine art and the artistic process while providing area artists with opportunities to exhibit and further develop their talents their educational social and instructional activities are many and varied the lynwood artists gallery is curated six times per year by these local artists piedmont arts guild the purpose of the piedmont arts guild is to encourage and develop awareness and appreciation of the arts among the citizens of martinsville and henry county the guild holds regular monthly meetings at piedmont arts that include a luncheon for members and guests the guild also provides volunteers to serve at piedmont arts hostess desk and to serve on the monthly mailing committee which is responsible for all piedmont arts bulk mailings piedmont writer s group the piedmont writer s group is devoted to aspiring writers of the piedmont the focus of the writer s group is to provide a forum for constructive critiquing to offer helpful suggestions and information and to share successes and setbacks all within an atmosphere of encouragement the writer s group holds monthly meetings at piedmont arts and often participates in piedmont arts programming theatreworks theatreworks was created by a group of interested members of the community who recognize the potential of community theatre in our area they offer opportunities for all community members to utilize and develop theater and music skills while working together on a communitywide project virginia foothills quilters guild the virginia foothills quilters guild was formed to stimulate and maintain an interest in all matters pertaining to the making collecting and preservation of quilts and to establish and promote educational endeavors through the art of quilting the quilters hold two meetings per month at piedmont arts and display their works biannually during the exhibit the art of the quilt community partners
