nown primarily in southeast texas as a former news anchor i ve touched more lives around the world through a hobby i picked up as a young child when i tell people that i love to crochet the process of creating fabric from yarn thread or other material using a crochet hook i m usually met with comments like my grandmother used to do that i first learned to crochet at an early age a self proclaimed `artsy person i lost touch with my craft after not practicing for a while it wasn t until age 22 that i picked up my long-lost hobby while attending college at sam houston state university in hun k stville tx my college roommate loved to crochet she would make hats and scarves for her sorority sisters she helped me hone in on my skills just before we graduated and i ve been doing it ever since after having my son donald iii now four-years-old i turned my hobby into a second income who would ve thought this old school craft would make its way into the new millennium turns out several people admire the craft but few take the time to learn or practice it or so i thought until i learned of a website called etsy.com it s an online market place for all things that are handmade and if you make it-they will come my former roommate and i run a shop on etsy together and i also have one of my own i average about 10 to15 orders a week comprising of mostly baby hats www.bellemichellecrochet.etsy.com is comprised of a host of unique items that cater to babies up to oneyear-old it normally takes me an hour to crochet one item however i occasionally get custom requests for toddler and adult hats now with two children my oneyear-old daughter elyse serves as great advertisement for the boutique she s featured on more than half of the hats i have on the site those are my favorite pictures on my site needless to say using yarn that is primarily 100 cotton most of my customers are photographers who use the hats as photo props although i have quite a bit of moms who frequent the site as well people love handmade things because you know someone took the time to make sure the item is perfect you have a lot more appreciation for things when you know someone s precious time was spent making it etsy has provided an outlet for my designs to be admired all over the world i enjoy seeing orders from singapore canada to florida georgia and minnesota however my favorite is when i m typing the address label and i see the order is from someone in houston a public information coordinator by day i look forward to unwinding with a skein of yarn and a crochet hook at the end of the day my fingers do get tired and my husband has made reference to our home resembling a sweat shop at times but i get a sense of joy when i hear my blackberry going off several times a day or in the middle of the night with requests for more orders i feel good knowing that people love my designs and appreciate my craftsmanship while i feel blessed to be able to use my hands to create such unique products i often feel that i m an older woman trapped in a younger person s body one thing i appreciate about living in the south is that people here know how to put their hands to work they can turn the most simple resources into an extraordinary piece of work and any time you can use your hands to create i believe you should share your gift with the world t
