what s in the newsletter this week parkland logo parkland hub stars of the week pta purchases property improvements parkland pride puzzler icas spelling results swimming programme writing competitions pta update second-hand uniforms friday lunches parent helpers footloose ladies night dear parents we are about to launch a new logo for parkland school the board of trustees has been developing and considering a wide range of concepts over the past eight months and we now have agreed on the final version our school s environment is a vibrant exciting and `colourful place for our students and staff the logo is eye catching and lifts parkland school s profile because it stands out it will attract future families to our school community and is something current students and staff can be proud of we believe that in an age where our children and their parents are used to only looking at colourful visual images it was timely that we update our school s image as well we have quite a lengthy explanation that goes with the image see next page but it was important that we retain our historical links and that it also related closely to our current vision and values consideration ourselves others environment will remain our core value and will continue to be a key part of everyday life at parkland school parents will be interested to know that no changes will be made to our uniform at the present time the first visual changes you might notice will be on stationery and possibly signage when the time comes to include the new logo on uniforms it will simply be phased in over a number of years so that there is no additional cost to parents peter barnett principal phil hildred chairman

the combination of hands reaching upwards is a clear link to the vision statement `rise to the challenge children at parkland school put their hands up they participate in a partnership of learning and they rise to the challenge the hands represent the ideas of growth progression and the learning partnerships between students teachers and parents the hands also represent consideration one of our core values one hand represents consideration for ourselves many hands represent consideration for others the sun like shape formed when the hands come together represent consideration for the different sized hands represent the range of partnerships our environment throughout the school adults supporting children and as a community we consider and support each other a vibrant colour palette ranging from blue through to gold and pink adds a sense of fun and represents the spectrum of exciting and challenging learning opportunities available to students the combination of the hands in this identity and the curve at the base of the arms hints at and links to the image of the sun present in our current logo and our `r.i.s.e inquiry model the four main colours represent the four areas of the `rise acronym with blue for `ready green for `i wonder gold for `searching and pink for `effect the tall typeface of parkland reiterates the idea of rising up and standing tall while the bolder typeface selected for `rise to the challenge contributes strength and confidence which goes hand in hand with learning at parkland school.

swimming programme our schoolwide swimming programme will begin on monday september 5th the first two weeks will involve rooms 11 2 9 10 1 3 4 from september 19th swimming will involve rooms 13 12 5 6 14 7 the total cost of the swimming programme is approx $11,000 per year this cost is made up of $8000 for the use of the pool and for the swimming instructors the balance is the bus cost to and from the pool for the past few years parents have benefitted as the swimming programme has been subsidised from our kiwisport funding but this no longer happens this year the full cost has had to be met through parent funding the parkland pta however has very kindly agreed to cover the costs of the bus transport which means that the cost to you is still subsidised this year the fee will be held at $30 per child so this works out to be very economical at $3 per lesson to help with the smooth running of swimming it is very important that children have their togs everyday swimming is compulsory unless there are special circumstances they need to bring their goggles too if they have them it is a huge help if junior children have learnt to dress themselves most junior children are very capable of doing this independently but they do need to be given the opportunity at home to learn those skills writing competitions there are two writing competitions currently available to interested students the bronwyn tate memorial short story and poetry competition is open to under 18 s and the fairfax media nie personal experience writing competition is for year 5 6 for more information please see the learning literacy page on the hub or contact sonia mudgway in room 6.
