higher achievement together spotlight on a publication of the brownsburg community school corporation bcsc education volume 26 no 1 back to school 2011 volunteer one hour a week and change lives as an oasis intergenerational tutor adults ages 55 and older tutor students in first through third grade in reading and writing training is free and you ll work with the same student for one hour each week if you re interested please call mrs julie van liew program coordinator oasis bcsc jvanliew@brownsburg.k12.in.us community members will have opportunities to voice their preferences on a school calendar for next year within the next month two options a traditional calendar similar to this year and a balanced calendar are under consideration the balanced calendar concept is gaining traction in area school districts with ips and warren townships already using it wayne planning on it for 2012-2013 and the hendricks county school districts of avon and danville giving their staffs and communities opportunities to consider it often confused with a year-round calendar the balanced calendar allows for eight weeks of summer break with the bcsc public calendar meetings nine-week grading periods being divided by · 9/19 delaware trail at 7 p.m two-week breaks school would typically · 9/20 bems at 7 p.m begin the first week of august with the first · 9/21 eagle at 7 p.m semester divided in mid-october with a two week fall break the second grading period end of semester concludes prior to the traditional two-week winter break the second semester is divided by a two-week spring break and the school year ends at the end of may jim snapp bcsc superintendent has three public meetings planned to answer questions and gather feedback on the calendar options in addition a link will be available on the bcsc website for calendar comments click on the following links to see the two proposed calendars 2012-2013 calendar discussion begins 317 852-5726 traditional calendar balanced calendar the next training session is september 6 8 don t miss out inside 2 3 4 superintendent s message employees honored for service administrative responsibilities school contacts teachers return character education contact us bcsc administration building 444 e tilden dr brownsburg in 46112 317.852.5726 fax 371.852.1015 www.brownsburg.k12.in.us and don t forget that a stopped bus is loading or unloading children indiana law requires traffic in both directions to stop on undivided highways when students are getting on or off a school bus the act of passing a stopped school bus with red lights flashing is illegal and violators will be prosecuted with school back in session it s a good time to take note of a few safety items that will keep our youngsters safe · when picking up your child at dismissal please go through the traffic line · rather than getting out of your car to open the door and put the safety belt on your child practice this habit at home so that your child is able to secure the seatbelt · students walking to school must use public accesses · when a student needs to be picked up for an appointment please 1 be prepared to show identification to office personnel 2 remember that teachers are not allowed to dismiss students to parents from the classroom during the school day students must be called from the office 3 provide the office with permission for someone other the parent/guardian to pick up the child 4 as the custodial parent provide a visitation schedule for your children if a noncustodial parent will be picking up the children back to school let s keep kids safe
