P rophetic prayer is a type of prayer that most of us engage often without realizing it. It is a very effective way to tap into the heart of the Father and see His Kingdom and will manifested in the earth realm. This prayer is God centered and directed. You pray what you hear or see from the Lord or what you know from the word; in essence you become God’s mouthpiece on the earth on that topic for prayer. God is all-powerful and can do anything He desires without the help of man, however when Adam was created, he was given a mandate to have dominion and rule the earth (Genesis 1: 26-28). Thus, the Lord invited man to partner with Him so He can demonstrate His sovereign work on the earth. And with this partnership comes man’s ability to take the word of God and declare God’s will over themselves, others and the earth at large. When focused (targeted) prayer points are prophetically declared, dynamic power is released. When focused (targeted) prayer points are prophetically declared, dynamic power is released. In the last Olympics, I watched the sport called Archery and I was intrigued at how precise the archers (bowmen) played this sport. With their bow and arrow, they must ensure that they hit the center of the target with every shot. The more arrows that hit the center, the more points they incurred. Prophetic prayer is much like focusing on the target. The person involved in this type of prayer does not just throw prayers into the atmosphere hoping that the Lord could hear one of these prayers. On the contrary, they know God’s word concerning the 10 prayer matter and sometimes see and hear instructions concerning how to pray very specifically. Such a person is praying what is in the heart of the Father (prophetically praying) and confidant that, that prayer will be answered. Prophecy is simply hearing from the Lord and then proclaiming His word individually or corporately. Prophecy is simply hearing from the Lord and then proclaiming His word individually or corporately. In Revelation 19:10, we read that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. What this means is that when we proclaim the Lordship of Jesus Christ, either in prayer, a message, prophetic word, songs, and etc, we are testifying about His person - this is the simplest form of prophecy. This type of prophetic declarations should be a lifestyle for all believers. It is true that there are the gifts of prophecy and the office of the prophets, which are operated by certain believers in the Body of Christ, yet you can pray prophetically whether or not you have the prophetic gift or are called as a prophet. Prayer as we are all aware in its basic simplicity is communication with the Lord; therefore it is the responsibility of all believers to pray as led by the Holy Spirit. The bible is full of examples of men and women who prayed prophetically. The word of the Lord (the bible) is written for our examples (Romans 15: 4), so that we can learn and grow in the Lord. Daniel is an example of a man who prayed prophetically. Daniel was a young Jewish man that was exiled along with other Israelites to Babylon as a result of the rebellion and wickedness of the people of Israel. The Lord had to

judge them having warned them several times through His prophets, but they continued to disobey His laws. After Daniel had served faithfully for several years in the Babylonian government, scripture tells us in Daniel 9:2 that he “understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem”. He was a student of the Word of God, so after recognizing the promise of the Lord to return the Israelites back to their promised land, he positioned himself to prophetically pray God’s promises into existence. Rather than saying, oh well, I guess because the Lord had said He would deliver His people back to the land of Israel, I don’t have to seek God or pray concerning this, because what God says, He will bring to pass. Nay!! He set himself to seek after the Lord (Daniel 9: 3). His prayers and supplication were heard and answered because he prayed into reality that which God had already determined to accomplish for His people. What had the Lord spoken over your life, family, community, or nation? The responsibility now rests on us to bring to remembrance His promises to us. The Lord says in Isaiah 43: 26 “Put me in remembrance; let us plead together; state your cause, that you may be justified”. The Lord says in Isaiah 43: 26 “Put me in remembrance; let us plead together; state your cause, that you may be justified”. The Lord is not saying here that He has forgotten what He had declared over you. On the contrary: it is for our own benefits to remind Him of His word, because it keeps His promises before our eyes and hearts so that those days that we might get discouraged, 11 His word would encourage us. What would have become the outcome of the children of Israel if Daniel had not studied the word to know the prophetic calendar of the Israelites at that time? The Lord may have had to raise someone else to pray, but what an awesome testimony Daniel had obtained by partnering with heaven in other to see and experience God’s prophetic word come to pass. The question now becomes how can we position ourselves to engage in prophetic prayer? The question now becomes how can we position ourselves to engage in prophetic prayer? First, we need to become students of the word of God. We learned earlier that because Daniel knew the word of the Lord spoken through the prophet Jeremiah, He was able to discern the time and season of Israel’s deliverance. The surest and fastest way of knowing God’s will is via His word. As you declare His word in prayer, the angels are released to bring forth that which you prayed (Psalms 103: 20). The more you study the word of God the more it becomes easier to remember and thereby incorporate His word during prayer. You cannot go wrong when you pray God’s word. Secondly, we are to pray always in the spirit. The Lord gave us a lethal spiritual weapon that causes confusion in the camp of the enemy. When we pray in the spirit (praying in tongues), we are speaking mysteries that only God and sometimes we (through the gift of interpretation of tongues) can understand. I have noticed that when I pray in tongues for a long time, I begin to have su-

pernatural insights and knowledge about certain things. When you pray much in the spirit, your spiritual senses become more activated, at this juncture you are more able to hear what the Father is saying and see what He is doing. We are admonished in Ephesians 6: 18a to pray always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit. For those who currently do not speak in tongues, ask your Father in faith for this wonderful gift and I encourage those who do to continue to increase using their heavenly language to communicate with the Lord. Thirdly, we have to learn to listen for His voice and see what He in- tends during prayer Thirdly, we have to learn to listen for His voice and see what He intends during prayer. Habakkuk understood this because in chapter 2 he say that “I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what He will say unto me, and what I will answer when I am reproved”. He was not only communing with the Lord in prayer, but was anticipating hearing and seeing what the Lord will speak and reveal respectively. Prayer becomes more dynamic when we are active participants. God communicates with us in various ways, including but not limited to dreams, visions, trances, voice of the Holy Spirit, other believers, and nature. To be effective in prophetic prayer, we need to yield to Him in prayer, be expectant to receive His directions, and quick to obey His instructions. Doing these things increases our sensitivity to the Lord and His Holy Spirit. Few years ago when I was in the Caribbean, there were several meteorologists warning about a coming major storm that would affect the country where I stayed and other sur- 12 rounding nations. I began to pray and speak prophetically to the weather commanding it to seize. I knew that it was not the will of the Lord for devastations that would negatively impact the lives of the people. As I prayed, I believe other saints were praying as well, I perceived that the Lord had heard and answered. Subsequently, we began to hear favorable reports that the storm has changed direction. Praise God. As you grow in your walk with the Lord, do not push aside subtle nudges that He places in your heart because it could just be that He wanted you to pray in other that He might advert certain life changing situations that the enemy wants to release. As noted earlier, you do not have to operate the gift of prophecy or be called as a prophet in other to pray prophetically. What qualifies us to engage in this type of prayer is that we are God’s children and we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. The Lord indeed reveals to redeem; He is the revealer of secrets and hidden things (Deuteronomy 29: 29). So the next time when you feel the need to pray for someone, please do not hesitate. Pray as the Holy Spirit leads you, pray in the spirit, declare the word of the Lord, listen and obey when He speaks. He wants to partner with each of us so that we can make an impact on this earth for His glory. Hallelujah. God bless you! Dr. Oluchi Nwanajuobi is a pharmacist by profession.
