the inner city weekender friday august 26 2011 news local 3 a local artist traded in a federal government arts grant for $20,000 worth of $100 notes but his intention was not to spend the money but create an artwork and then auction it off to the highest bidder p icture this an artist receives a government grant of $20,000 the artist takes that money directly to the reserve bank and trades it for 200 uncirculated $100 notes th is is no difficult equation it s exactly the compromise marrickville conceptual artist denis beaubois made in the name of art the work titled currency will go under the hammer next wednesday at an art auction house in melbourne estimated to go for $15,000 to $20,000 the lower amount would mean the winning bidder could profit on the work before even taking it home but it s equally possible that the controversial sculpture could home a higher price than its economic worth for more than 20 years mr beaubois has established himself as a performance and video artist adding the tate modern art gallery in london to his repertoire the sculpture comprises of the notes stacked as they come from the bank the only change to their form is a slight rise on the corner of the notes from when mr beaubois counted the money there s no story behind it it s just lots of different thoughts mr beaubois said i have come to the realisation that as i get older money is more important to me th is was quite problematic for me as an artist and i wanted to create something that would reflect the internal tension that separates myself from the value of money despite auctioneers predictions of the sculpture selling mr beaubois isn t so convinced i m just interested to see what happens i set out to have the work auctioned off from the beginning that is part of the work s longevity he said however i have come to the conclusion that it may not sell because it poses many moral problems for the buyer under conditions that bind buyers with an artwork in australia an artwork must not be dissected or changed it would be very difficult to police in this case he said conceptual artist denis beaubois at his marrickville home inset the artwork to be auctioned off it s interesting though if someone was to spend the cash the artwork would ultimately be dispersed to potentially 200 people the fact that the cash came from an australia council for the arts grant adds further controversy some might see it as a comment on the funding system while someone else might see it only as a quick way of making some money he said within the realm of an artwork people might get something that contains all of these ideas mr beaubois will travel to melbourne next week to attend the auction and document the sale for the second stage of his project 053icd1010
