4 opinion friday august 26 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk troy dodds the politics so now the police are set to investigate allegations that federal labor mp craig thomson misused his union credit card for those who don t know mr thomson is alleged to have used a credit card issued to him when he was head of the health services union to pay for the services of prostitutes full credit to michael smith from 2ue who has done a fabulous job with his coverage of this story one that threatens to do what carbon tax punting licences education revolutions and pink batts has failed to do and that is bring down the labor government troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au 1017wwd3527 t 9.30am family service 6pm night service 1017wwd7422 his week s column is a bit of a mixed bag somewhat like my brain on most days of the week there s a rap for a local venue a bit of politics and just a touch of footy and i may even throw in the tale of dodds v wasp s nest from last weekend the venue a few weeks ago i had a casual friday after-work beer with two of penrith s best drinkers under 30 in the shape of michael todd and tim williams i was introduced to neel chand the ceo of penrith rsl and since then we ve caught up a couple of times to discuss some of the fabulous improvements being made around the place neel is one of those blokes you instantly like dedicated committed and clearly visionary something that any club needs in times such as these on tuesday he had one of his proudest moments in the job so far when he opened the rsl s new restaurant zacs great night fabulous food and a sensational story about how it all came about with local design students from nepean tafe coming up with the whole look and feel of the new restaurant there s also the story of how one of the blokes pulling beers behind the bar came up with the logo and now works in the rsl s design team club food has come along way since chicken schnitzel and chips though don t worry it s still on the menu and the people at zacs should be commended for a fabulous-looking restaurant there s more to come at the rsl with a special rsl display in the works and a five-level car park set for construction next year if like me you d kind of forgotten about the rsl in recent years pop in and have a look the place is looking stunning tanya davies mp member for mulgoa civoniceva is an employee of panthers the many front page headlines about thomson i get the feeling the general public hasn t quite resonated with this story and one big issue could probably brush it aside pretty quickly tony abbott didn t help the situation with a pretty weak response to a question on jason morrison s 2ue breakfast show last week when he was asked how he would have handled the thomson debacle had it been one of his mps the question has been repeated since then and abbott hasn t been overly strong in his response but why rock the boat julia gillard and co are doing enough of that as it is and abbott s ploy at the moment would simply be to pass them the rope and see what happens th is is a government that remains in crisis and unfortunately the good that exists in the labor party is set to be washed away by badly timed and misjudged policy come the next election the footy i couldn t quite believe the back page story in the daily telegraph on wednesday which revealed the contents of petero civoniceva s column in the panthers match-day newspaper last weekend for those who haven t caught up with the story civoniceva went to extraordinary lengths to ensure that comments about the club s board went to print civoniceva who is walking out on the fi nal year of his contract with penrith believes that the current board should be replaced at elections later this year the chairman of that board don feltis is probably the most dedicated panthers fan you ll fi nd we exchanged a few emails on wednesday and what was obvious was that feltis didn t want to create a war of words between the board and the departing skipper he instead issued a sensible statement truth is he would have had every right to blow up civoniceva has spent four years at penrith and whilst his impact has been stellar his comments in his column this week were in bad taste and ill-timed the bloke is leaving the club and feels a parting swipe is needed and i for one just can t work out why i m loathed to criticise someone who spent four years as a proud panther and he is of course entitled to his opinion but at the end of the day civoniceva is an employee of the panthers organisation and is still getting paid by the place at the moment to put those comments in print in an official panthers product is disappointing to say the least a sour end to a great time at penrith dodds v wasp s nest you can blame 6 opinion friday august 26 2011 the western weekender dear weekender email penritheditorial@mediaview.com.au post suite 2 42-44 abel street jamisontown 2750 weekender i recall a contributor to letters to the editor called zod i also note that his scribblings satisfy the rules of waffle in last week s contribution titled phoney tony one could only conclude that zod is not capable of independent thought he appears to be limited to regurgitating labor propaganda and union rhymes his mention of dr s seuss would appear to be an appropriate abode for one with such disjointed waffle another character called general zod is a fictional character living in superman s smallville one can only speculate why one would not use the name given to him by his parents nor have an address in the nepean region like western weekender readers rather than the email rick putra glenmore park down the street with a sign hanging from his neck saying do not trust me i will steal from you as i am a thief i think that s appalling any issues the young lad had with petty crime are now going to being overtaken by problems with mockery and bullying at school i can understand the desperation for parents to keep their young ones on the straight and narrow but any measure surely has to be about what is in the long term interests of the child when my mum smacked me i didn t particularly care the fact that it happened repeatedly would tend to suggest i didn t really learn my lesson i would never smack my own child my form of discipline would be what used to scare me most when i was a child when brought to you by please explain in reference to the federal government advert western weekender page 18 august 19 david the question you have to ask your good self is if i were prime minister tax on not 500 peter townsend penrith welcome peter it was great to see a wonderful newsman like peter overton joining the weekender team last week i look forward to seeing what he and his colleagues have to say tony via email there are few issues that fi re people up more than how you should discipline your children my mum used to smack me a couple of times she locked me out of the house too i didn t end up a sociopath as a result nor did mum end up on charges of child abuse but they were different times the reason i bring all this up is because of a case that received a lot of attention during the week a 10-year-old boy in queensland being forced by his mum to walk my dad would raise his voice poor mum had to put up with trying to keep five kids in line and used various threats against us but on the rare occasions that my dad would raise his voice it would scare the living daylights out of us troublemakers and surely that s the desired effect a colleague of mine ben fordham said the worst punishment his parents gave him was when his parents would make him telephone his grandparents to tell them what he d done wrong the embarrassment was more painful than any swift hand to the backside could deliver there s no one size fits all answer to these questions but i can pretty safely say that public humiliation isn t the solution peter overton tom steinfort the faces of
