G Discounts for children, teenagers and students G Senior citizens can travel free off-peak G Short hop fares £2 Rail Cycle Each weekend in May, artists in Brighton, Hove, Ditchling and coast, throw open their homes and studios to bring you everything from sculpture and painting to jewellery, ceramics and textiles. More than 1,000 artists exhibit their work in venues citywide and in the surrounding area, providing art lovers with an engaging and inspiring experience and offering the opportunity to buy work and chat directly with the creators. This year over 60 new Open Houses will be taking part for the first time. A majority of Open House venues belong to one of 14 Open House Trails, which cover different areas of the city and beyond; there are also non-trail or independent Open Houses in many areas. Trails are geographically grouped and houses are usually within walking distance of each other. Entry is free – and many Open Houses offer homemade tea and cake. The Artists Open Houses is an inclusive open to all event, welcoming participation from all areas of the community, including community groups, marginalized, school and college student artists. This year, be sure to look out for our children’s competition, devised by AOH headline sponsors ARCH angel Architects: ARCH angel have selected a house from each trail that has some interesting architectural or design feature. Families are invited to visit these houses and children can devise their ‘dream home’ from inspiration acquired there. Look out for houses marked with a purple dot in the trail listings. Winners will receive a prize of a Lego Building Set and Lego Architecture Set for younger and older children respectively (see page 52 for details).
