program overview this program offered by palazzi florence association for international education traces the development of greek etruscan and roman civilizations with the objective of exploring how their distinct cultures have shaped and continue to affect italy today this program combines lectures visits and on-site research in the locations of rome sicily and tuscany students will explore the cultures that arose in these ancient civilizations compare the three civilizations the relationship between them and the above-mentioned locations students and program leaders will travel together as a community of scholars 24 hours a day seven days a week for the duration of the trip while traveling students will be attending daily classes and work on specific individual assignments program learning objectives the academic context of this program is composed by formal lectures visits guided tours and independent study by the end of the study abroad term students should have a comprehensive understanding of roman greek and etruscan societies and cultures through the study of the art culture mythology history political and military development students will understand how these ancient civilizations have shaped and continue to shape contemporary italy three week option june 24 checkin july 14 checkout classes are held daily in the locations as described below in program details some academic activities and travel may take place over the weekends four week option june 17 checkin july 14 checkout four week session option beginning with a one week cultural introduction to italy consisting of travel research that takes place in tuscany the program continues in the following three weeks as described below in program details 2012 dates credit load 6 credits for three week option 7 credits for four week option with addition of 1 credit one week cultural introduction to italy program details students will explore ancient renaissance and baroque rome in sites such as the coliseum forum vatican pantheon ara pacis trajan s column and the architecturally renown historic piazzas of the city piazza navona campo de fiori piazza farnese piazza spagna and piazza del campidoglio week 1 rome week 2 siciliy visits and lectures on greek civilization will take place in the towns of taormina the amphitheater of syracuse and the fascinating ortigia island and the valley of the temples in agrigento week 3 florence and southern tuscany the final week of the program will consider the strong traces of roman and etruscan cultures throughout tuscany the city of florence and its roman past will be studied in the first portion of this week and will include a visit to the etruscan city of fiesole a day trip to maremma in southern tuscany one of the richest areas of etruscan presence will conclude the program program includes courses and educational activities accommodation in all locations some meals included transportation for all site visits internet services in school facilities student services extracurricular activities use of the palazzi library and gym in florence please note students must double check with their home institutions to make sure that apicius or fua credits will be transferable to their home college/university in the event credits would not be accepted students can obtain us transcripts from both private and public universities at an extra charge for more info and detailed syllabus of this program please contact info@fua.it www.fua.it www.palazzifirenze.com www.palazziflorence.com
