message from brother james kelly my dear alumni recently i received a newsletter from xavier high school in connecticut where i was stationed from 1974 until 1991 the magazine had a picture of the seniors and their fathers who were also graduates of xavier i taught perhaps three quarters of the men pictured yet i could not recognize one it was a study in mortality i knew them when they were sixteen they are all now in their late forties and early fifties and have lost that boyish glow that made me think of our own graduation and the picture which we take of the newest alumni with their fathers it s all about tradition a golden gael of the class of 1961 stopped by recently to tell me how much he and his classmates had enjoyed attending our graduation ceremony he had produced daughters and no sons but he had great hope that his grandson would attend the mount and become part of the generational tradition of the school which is so important to us he also mentioned that his classmates from the mount are among his best friends these are friendships that have lasted for fifty-four years tradition again our capital campaign building men who matter to refurbish memorial gymnasium and to build a new gymnasium is now up to $15.05 million that is more money than the mount has ever raised in its history yet we still have ten million to go to reach the twenty-five million we need to complete the project when i first came here in 2001 i never thought i would see a million dollar gift at the mount and now we have five of them thanks to the alumni association three alumni and an anonymous benefactor you will note that the mount won the league championship in rugby rugby it s the perfect sport for boys since it appears to be ungoverned chaos for the life of me i can t figure out what the rules are although they tell me there are rules with no protective equipment we have more broken bones and sprained muscles in rugby than perhaps in any other sport two years ago mr james doherty of our english department was taking pictures during a rugby game things moved a little too quickly and he ended up in the hospital with surgery on his knee that was just from watching although rugby does make me nervous i was glad to have a championship in a spring sport my goal every year is to take more freshmen into the school in august than graduate from the school in june thank god that will happen this year we graduated 265 seniors and we will admit 280 freshmen in august one of the frustrating things about being a school administrator is that you finally get one group trained the way you want them and they leave then you start all over again this summer we continued the tradition of the xaverian wall we have constructed a new wall in the principal s office which we will no doubt take down in about three years in every xaverian brothers school in which i have been stationed i have watched walls go up and come down usually in three-year cycles now we need the wall in three years someone will say why do we have that wall and down it will come that is just one of the minor projects of this summer once again the school is spending a fortune on technology improving our wireless network and upgrading computers i am certain the day will come when the mount will be using electronic text books and when each boy will have an ipad or a laptop or a notepad or whatever they call them now text books are becoming exorbitantly expensive the remote preparation for that day is strong wireless network and good equipment since mr kapusinski and his boys won the state this year in robotics we want to make sure that all those techno-geeks among our student body have all the resources they need yes i m the curmudgeon who still wants to hold a book in my hand to read it but if technology will help my students to read more efficiently i am all for it this summer four xaverian brothers associated with the mount celebrated jubilees of their entrance into our congregation brother charles of our math and athletic departments celebrated his golden jubilee and brother charles warthen brother dean brother labré dillon and brother lawrence nyhan brother martel celebrated their diamond jubilees the mount congratulates these four brothers and thanks them for their service to the school in the main foyer of ryken hall is a listing of all deceased xaverian brothers who have served at the mount there are 246 names on the list which represents thousands of years of service on the part of the xaverian brothers to this school as the older alumni might remember from 1917 until the 1970s the principal of the mount was also the superior of the brothers community canon law required that he could only serve for six years entering my eleventh year as the head of the school i am one of the longest serving heads since brother joseph died in 1903 he did twenty years so i will never match him if you look on the school s website msjnet.edu and go to the president s letter for the month of august you will find a prayer to saint joseph for the mount which we now say every day at the beginning of school i would very much appreciate it if you would take time every day to say that prayer to saint joseph for the mount we need your prayers even more than your money please remember that you are always most welcome at the mount sincerely themount the f or many seniors each year graduation is bittersweet a time for them to leave high school and anticipate the joys and wonders of college life yet eight members of the class of 2011 had to leave their high school behind before their senior year even began last spring the archdiocese of baltimore announced that it would be closing 13 of its 64 schools at the end of the academic year the only high school on that list was cardinal gibbons brendan sarver reflects on how he felt when he heard the news i was extremely surprised devastated really i didn t know how or why it was happening it put me in somewhat of a state of shock another senior charles cephas echoed sarver s sentiments it was like a rug was pulled out from under us he said we were told that there was no way the school would be closing and then the next minute we were told it was parents and students rushed to make decisions as to where they would or even could attend school in the fall my cousin ben alston 10 had attended mount saint joe and i knew some people here who i ran track with over the summer commented cephas my parents knew it was a good school and it was right around the corner from gibbons making transportation easier than going somewhere else mount saint joseph held interviews with many of the cardinal gibbons students and thirty-five enrolled as part of the classes of 2011 2012 and 2013 a special orientation was held for these students at the beginning of the year while mount saint joseph could never replace the memories that cardinal gibbons gave to its students the community welcomed them with open arms i had attended our lady of perpetual help and a lot of my classmates came to mount saint joseph so when the time came to decide on a new school i came here because i already knew i had friends that were at st joe stated sarver after the first two months i felt right at home everyone was so welcoming here it s a similar atmosphere to gibbons and the students faculty and administration treated me like i had been attending msj for the past three years little by little the students became a part of mount saint joseph however in the spring the memories sprung back to life with the seniors as graduation approached it was hard knowing that i would be attending a different graduation than the one i had envisioned said cephas who became involved in track and the black awareness club during his time at the mount gibbons will always be a part of who i am but mount saint joseph is now a part of me too during the senior awards assembly members of the cardinal gibbons faculty in conjunction with mount saint joseph s principal barry fitzpatrick presented each of the eight seniors with a pin of the cardinal gibbons seal the students were asked to wear it on their tuxedo at graduation as a reminder of their true alma mater while these students had become mount men the community understood that the mount was only their home for a year and that they were still in mourning over the closing of their high school cephas notes it was great to see the teachers and to know that the archdiocese was recognizing the struggle we had overcome in the past year having that pin allowed us to pay tribute to gibbons during graduation the cardinal gibbons class of 2011 was recognized by the school in a separate ceremony held on june 15th seniors received a letter inducting them into the cardinal gibbons alumni association and a plaque with a photo of the school the event while no replacement for a graduation ceremony helped ease the pain a bit sarver says it was good to see everyone to reconnect trade stories and recount memories the people who spoke at the ceremony were very impactful and really captured the moment perfectly brendan sarver will be attending stevenson university this fall and plans on majoring in psychology he received an army/rotc scholarship and plans on participating in that program as well as play lacrosse during college charles cephas will be attending hampton university in virginia this fall and plans on majoring in computer science he has no plans to run track at the university level but anticipates getting involved in other areas summer 2011 7

moses hubbard 11 wins the written word contest for second year to encourage excellent writing among the students of mount saint joseph the class of 1947 has endowed an annual writing contest entitled the written word contest moses hubbard 11 earned the $1,500 first prize for his work which is featured below mano a mano m ile 68 for a few seconds i was able to watch the marker grow in the windshield its neat white numbers coming closer and closer until they swelled in the side window then shot out behind us and were gone one more down my dad was beside me eyes forward and hands set firm around the steering wheel i looked at him and wondered whether we weren t thinking the same thing only a couple hours left three in traffic i can do that i hope it was just the two of us on our way to north carolina where we d reconnect with my mom and brother and sister when i was about ten and these drives first started i came up with a term for them mano a mano 1 1 my family would take two cars to wherever we were going so my dad and i could talk in private he d use the alone time to lecture me about guy stuff drinking drugs the terrors and glories of sex more recently guy stuff meant sats and now it s college and taxes these are cumbersome often awkward topics but i understood early on that my dad was only doing what every father has to educate his son about life in all its bulk and inelegance in many ways fathers are their sons most important teachers in the immediate sense they may be helping with math homework or showing us how to throw a ball or talking us through girl problems but these instructions add up and form something bigger aggregate lessons much greater than the sum of their parts these lessons about integrity or devotion or love the sorts of words you see chiseled into stone or mounted on archways are ones we will never forget for better or as is too often the case for worse it s ultimately from our fathers that we learn what it means to be men hours of driving and hundreds of miles on his odometer are a testament to how well my dad knows this and how hard he has tried to rise to the occasion but despite this despite the lectures and all the things he s taught me i still have no idea who my dad is it wasn t long into our car ride before my dad had filled his guy-stuff quota for the drive and silence crept into the air it was unattractive pained silence the sort that disquiets your mind if it had been visible i imagine it would ve looked like smog really though to call it silence isn t quite accurate it was more a mutual lack of words his speechlessness amplifying my own and pained isn t right either i didn t feel that so much as a dull longing to be for just a few seconds somewhere else someone else later in the drive around 85 as the mile markers went he began talking to me about the wall a screenplay he was 11 though working on since he retired and finally has the time the title pretty much sums the story up it s about barriers between people the barriers of time of circumstance of fear or of conviction i looked at my dad and for a moment it felt as though i could reach out and rap my knuckles against the barrier that divided us even then alone in the car there was a wall between us the wall of years the wall of masculinity and the almost pathological kindness he finds so hard to break free from eventually the conversation dwindled and like a fading echo made a few last bounces between us until it was gone completely but before the speechlessness could grab him again he turned and did something that i ve since had a great deal of difficulty forgetting he looked at me and with almost palpable weariness said i wish i wish i could find a better way to communicate with you son we ve never really connected and i d like to i wished that too i still wish it and more than that i wish that i could ve told him so that the two of us both want the same thing that we ve been pounding against the same wall all along just on opposite sides but words seemed so inadequate and i knew the second they came out something in the oxygen would wring out all their feeling and they d mean even less than if they d never been said i might as well have shouted it after the little markers in the rearview mirror so instead i just laughed a little and turned away and that s the way i stayed little has changed since the car ride my dad and i continue to talk continue to miss each other s marks and then turn away and laugh i still don t know him which has made it difficult for guy stuff to translate into larger lessons and even more complicated for me to figure out what the hell people mean by being a man it s also i think why i distinguish so strongly between the words dad and father i wish i could find some value in this or a reason or a justification for why things are the way they are but i haven t it d be nice even to be able to blame someone for this him for not teaching right or me for not listening but what more could either of us have done sometimes there is nothing intelligent that can be said or done about these sorts of things and like so many others they go on in quiet desperation but even as i sit and write this and worry about being a man i look at my dad bent over his keyboard typing up the wall i wonder if maybe i haven t learned from him something else a first lesson about life about its tenuousness and thousand heartbreaks what it can mean to love but never adequately communicate that love maybe this is what they call being human i ve since learned that this actually translates into hand-to-hand not man-to-man as i had originally thought summer 2011 9
