welcome to 2nd grade at sheridan elementary this will be an exciting year for your child as they learn many new skills and concepts and begin to transition into more independent learners we are both committed to providing your child with a quality education as well as a fun and safe learning environment parents play a huge part in a child s education making communication between parents and teachers crucial we will be sending notes and newsletters home periodically to help keep you updated on what s going on in our classrooms please feel free to contact us at the school with any questions suggestions or concerns that you have 717-4670 or e-mail us at laurastrahm@usd475.org kimcady@usd475.org attendance it is very important for your child to be here first bell rings promptly at 8:15 and the tardy bell will ring at 8:20 other students depend on the valuable contributions of your student at this time in addition your child s daily routine will be upset if they are not on time for school please call the school if your child will be absent or tardy if your child will be coming to school late because of an appointment please let us know by 8:45 so we can order a lunch for your child notes

notes snack students may bring a small snack which will be eaten mid morning during reading it must be something they can consume quickly and should not be junk food birthdays if students wish they may bring treats on their birthdays please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly and get those treats distributed discipline students are expected to follow all school and district rules as described in the student handbook in the event of rules being broken students will have consequences for their actions ranging from a warning to a discipline referral to the office and suspension toys and objects please remember that there is no show and tell in second grade so toys and other objects not necessary for school should be left at home in the event that there is a need for your child to bring something to class that may add to the day s lesson a note will be sent home with the student if you have any further questions regarding this issue please refer to the student handbook.

cooperative learning and life skills throughout this year students will be expected to perform tasks by working together in small groups during these tasks and throughout their day they will be expected to practice their life skills these skills are important at sheridan elementary and will be stressed to students as we develop them with the development of these skills it is our hope the students will grow into responsible caring members of society volunteering this year we are in need of a room mother for our halloween and christmas parties we also encourage all of you to be a part of the various activities that your child will be involved in throughout the school year if any of you are ever interested in helping out please let us know and don t forget to check in at the office upon arriving at school olweus program sheridan elementary uses the olweus [pronounced ol-vey-us bullying prevention program the program is a comprehensive school-wide program designed for use in elementary middle or junior high schools its goals are to reduce and prevent bullying problems among school children and to improve peer relations at school the program has been found to reduce bullying among children improve the social climate of classrooms and reduce related antisocial behaviors such as vandalism and truancy the olweus program has been implemented in more than one dozen countries around the world important things to know snack time mid morning healthy foods only recess/lunch room 8 11:40 room 7 11:45 students have recess for 20 minutes followed by a 20 minute lunch time second grade school supply list 2 boxes kleenex 2 glue sticks 16 crayons 16 #2 pencils 1 fiskars scissors supply bag w zipper 8x6 or smaller 4 2 pocket folders for homework 1 pkg dry erase markers 1 pkg pencil top erasers 1 spiral notebook wide rule 1 baggie w 20 pennies 5 nickels 10 dimes 4 quarters 10 dimes 4 quarters please no trapper keepers or 3 ring binders we also ask that only yellow #2 pencils be brought to school because pencils will be shared pencil top erasers will also be shared.

2nd grade math number and numeration strand understand the meanings uses and representations of numbers understand equivalent names for numbers understand common numerical relations data and chance strand select and create appropriate graphical representations of collected or given data analyze and interpret data understand and apply basic concepts of probability geometry strand investigate characteristics and properties of two-and threedimensional geometric shapes apply transformations and symmetry in geometric situations operations and computation strand compute accurately make reasonable estimates understand meanings of operations measurement and reference frames strand understand the systems and processes of measurement use appropriate techniques tools units and formulas in making measurements use and understand reference frames 2nd grade language arts reading miss strahm and mrs cady will be using the success for all reading program they will incorporate cooperative learning as new skills are taught and old skills are reviewed students will be divided into 2 3 leveled reading groups depending on their individual needs therefore students will not necessarily stay with their homeroom teacher for reading instruction the four main comprehension strategies that we will focus on are clarifying summarizing questioning and predicting we will also be working on skills such as prefixes suffixes synonyms/antonyms homonyms and fluency spelling spelling will begin with a review of various phonics patterns and then focus on more complex word building exercises such as base words and word endings and contractions we will also work on handwriting using the d nealian handwriting workbook a little later in the year we will begin to learn cursive writing patterns functions and algebra strand understand patterns and functions use algebraic notation to represent and analyze situations and structure

d nealian handwriting accelerated reader accelerated reader all second graders will participate in the accelerated reader program at the beginning of each quarter your child will be given a goal to reach by the end of the 9 weeks we will start off with 6 books and increase the goal as the year progresses there will be a halfway goal in the middle of each quarter for students that have received 80 or better on half of the number of total books there will also be a halfway and full ar party for the students that meet their goals with 80 or better on all ar tests your child s reading level will be determined at the beginning of the year by the star test we will test again in january and then again at the end of the year to monitor student progress throughout the year students will be given the opportunity to ar test almost every day please have your child bring their ar books to school every day so they can have the opportunity to read them during silent reading time they may take their books home at night but make sure they are back to school every day when your child reads at home please have them read out loud to you or an older sibling book it program we will be participating in the book it program october through march signatures on the monthly calendar will help reach the goal each student should read at least 15 minutes each night aa bb cc dd ee ff gg hh ii jj kk ll mm nn oo pp qq rr ss tt uu vv ww xx yy zz
