summer 2011 king s news the king s school ely learning adventurously doing porridge a bowl of porridge has become the break-time favourite with hereward boarders since house matron michelle parr introduced a healthier eating campaign she buys six kilos of oats every week and although sweet treats are still available demand for tuck has fallen by 70 per cent the boarding experience at king s ely has been hailed as `outstanding ­ the top rating which is awarded for providing exceptionally high quality ­ following an official inspection by ofsted the office for standards in education king s ensures that all boarders `live in a caring and very supportive boarding and educational environment reported the ofsted inspectors who visited the school in march to examine the level of care and services provided for boarders their report rated the school as outstanding and good in all areas the school encourages boarding pupils of all abilities and cultures to adopt active and healthy lifestyles stated the report there are numerous opportunities for them to take part in a wide range of different physical and cultural activities and overseas boarding pupils are well supported and encouraged to actively participate in these important aspects of school life there was praise for the school s policies on health-related matters boarding pupils receive excellent healthcare and guidance from a well qualified and experienced staff team which is ensuring their health care needs are promoted and identified boarding at king s rated `outstanding excellent advice is available on matters such as substance misuse smoking cessation and relationships teaching and non-teaching staff help students make a positive contribution and there was praise for the way boarders are helped to achieve well and enjoy what they do said the report which also highlighted the comprehensive menu available for boarders to choose from each day `boarding pupils were complimentary about the food and the number of choices available the catering manager and the picture liz sayers food committee meet regularly and develop menu options that take account of specialist dietary and cultural requirements the leadership and management of the school are outstanding and the senior management team is offering strong leadership to both boarding pupils and boarding staff thereby ensuring the outcomes for boarding pupils are excellent the full report is available on the ofsted website and on the school website www.kingsschoolely.co.uk minister visits schools minister nick gibb mp plans to visit king s in september to hear about the success of the government-funded chemistry network a partnership between king s and three local state schools india baynes won triple jump gold at the national prep schools championships clearing 9.86 metres in the under-14 girls event and breaking her own school record by 61cm a truly impressive performance said king s head of athletics richard powell not bad for someone who only really started training seriously for triple jump nine weeks ago golden day for india enquiries@kings-ely.cambs.sch.uk 1 www.kingsschoolely.co.uk

king s news scaling heights for great ormond street king s junior pupils and staff aimed high when they set out to raise £1,000 for great ormond street children s hospital but they smashed their target and the charity will benefit by £1,300 thanks to the generosity of families and friends who supported charity action day a gigantic portable climbing wall set up outside the main entrance to the school was a popular attraction plenty of parents took up the offer of a car wash from a willing team of pupils in the courtyard crowds gathered to watch a succession of sporting teachers who agreed to be soaked by wet sponges nails were painted second hand books tea coffee and cakes were sold and plenty took a guess at the number of sweets in a jar outside attractions included a coconut sky and beat the keeper soaking the teacher dr nigel tetley was one of the good sports who was pelted with wet sponges alice crofts left and lucy openshaw sold bead bracelets they had made and raised over £200 on their stall face painting was popular kitty bowles gets to work on customer lydia hamilton-bing tackling the gigantic climbing wall car cleaning willing hands helped by a jet wash manned by neil-porter-thaw osmen prove they re smooth fund-raisers waiting for wax ben nicholas jonathan east grayson de villiers nick bates and alex muffett watch while pink-wigged auctioneer miraj joshi takes a bid from fergus snell osfest is now established as an endof-summer term tradition this year s event drew the crowds to new field where osmond house had laid on a feast of fun which raised nearly £500 for the teenage cancer trust king s senior s chosen charity a village fete would have been hard pressed to stage as many sideshows with a coconut shy fortune telling beat the goalie a keepy-uppy challenge face painting a bungee run apple bobbing pitch and put barbecue crepes stall a `hug and compliment booth and live music all aimed at persuading pupils and parents to part with cash for tct a group of osmen volunteers joined by jonathan east and grayson de villiers from hereward agreed to undergo `live waxing and bidders paid to help them become smoother fund-raisers 2

king s news cathy coxes royal marine commandos cathy rule cathy and the royal marine commandos during training cathy rule was key to the success of the arduous journey undertaken by four royal marine commandos recovering from wounds injury or illness mostly sustained on operations with 40 commando in afghanistan last year they rowed the length of the thames 150 miles and 45 locks ­ in five days from 10-14 july cathy was chosen as lead cox on the stretch from lechlade in the cotswolds to teddington in west london she is a keen member of the champion of the thames rowing club in cambridge where she is acknowledged as a `natural cox plucky able to keep a cool head and confident with mechanical controls a family friend who has links with the military put her name forward for the challenge her father drove her to somerset where the men are based for training sessions which had to be fitted around her gcse exams the thames challenge is part of the men s recovery programme and they cannot be sponsored directly so the hope is that it will provide a platform to raise funds for the royal marines charitable trust fund find out more at www.rmctf.org.uk old elean george eddy one of 15 oxford students who make up the acapella group out of the blue failed to progress to the final of itv s britain s got talent their semi-final performance did not attract sufficient votes to put them in the top three and the chance of reaching the final but judge amanda holden told viewers out of the blue they should have been there george 22 who sings bass has just completed a real estate management degree at oxford brookes interest in out of the blue has rocketed since their exposure on britain s got talent listen to them on their website www.ootb.org.uk out of the blue get judge s vote george eddy during his sixth form years at king s when he won cambridge singer of the year and went on to be cambridge musician of the year when talented musician luke cave auditioned for three top music colleges he was spoilt for choice ­ because all three offered him a place the 16-year-old has accepted the offer from the royal academy of music where he will study clarinet and composition he was also offered a place by the junior royal college of music and the junior trinity and guildhall schools of music ­ both offers were given on the day of his audition luke will study biology chemistry maths further maths and physics at aslevel when he moves up into king s sixth form and will take the train to the royal academy on saturdays he is a former member of the national children s orchestra and plans to audition for a place with the national youth orchestra clarinet player spoilt for choice luke cave combining studies at king s and at the royal academy of music 3

king s news tv presenter is prize-giving guest the head sue freestone flanked by adrienne lawler and chairman of governors richard slogrove pictured with year 13 prize winners television presenter broadcaster and journalist adrienne lawler was guest speaker at king s senior prize-giving in ely cathedral a regular face on the bbc s world service she co-presents of itv s antiques and collectables programme everything must go and also runs her own consultancy business covering a range of issues from customer service sales and marketing communication to pr and media relations jonathan east and charlotte bain with their poticary medals which have been presented to heads of school since 1870 the first medals were made of gold the mayor of ely cllr brian ashton presented the city of ely local community contribution prize to ruth scott hugo daniel was the first recipient of a new fokse prize awarded for a major charitable effort sixth former harlan kohll has won an award in the 2010-2011 corpus christi essay competitions the cambridge university college invites entries in one of three competition categories classics and politics philosophy and psychology and sociology harlan s entry in the philosophy competition was highly commended he received his certificate during a ceremony at the college open day on 8 july and is awaiting as-levels in religious studies philosophy and ethics english maths and physics award winner harlan kohll corpus christi commends harlan sixth formers had the chance to quiz a c grayling when the acclaimed philosopher came to the hayward theatre to talk about his newly-published `secular bible the good book which offers a thoughtful non-religious alternative for those who do not follow one of the world s major religions the visit was organised by head of religious studies and director of sixth sixth formers quiz philosopher form gill smith in conjunction with topping s the ely booksellers whose literary events attract such a wide variety of authors to ely professor grayling has offered to return to king s next term as a sixth form enrichment programme speaker topping s autumn programme includes sir roy strong on 20 september and claire tomalin on 27 october king s sixth formers with a.c grayling from left juan girones hugo daniel florence wynn bethany poole robert west and matthew collier before the final match of their sri lankan tour during the summer holidays a group of cricketers in years 8 9 and 10 will present £2,000 to the shelton trust helping rebuild schools in sri lanka founded to rebuild schools devastated by the 2004 tsunami the match will be played at the galle test ground against a team of tsunami orphans coached by arjuna ranatunga who led sri lanka to victory in the 1996 cricket world cup the day will end with a gala dinner attended by ranatunga now an mp and current sri lankan players 4

king s news king s has received an award from the good schools guide for the best results at a-level achieved by girls taking art and design textiles at an english school a-level textiles students have consistently achieved among the top five marks nationally editor of the good schools guide ralph lucas said the aim of the publication s awards was `to highlight excellent teaching in individual subjects awards were decided on a-level result over the last three years director of art alison rhodes a textiles specialist said i am absolutely thrilled with the award it s also a recognition of our talented students enthusiasm hard work and dedication the head sue freestone said the arts have always been high on the agenda at `excellent teaching earns award director of art alison rhodes with the good schools guide award king s and the standards achieved in the school are exceptional this award is a fitting tribute to the quality of teaching in our textiles department the £3.5m arts complex was opened last year by former pupil lord browne of madingley in his capacity as chairman of the tate gallery music festival finalists concert silversmith forges glittering career a new generation studying design and technology enjoyed a masterclass from old elean rebecca hill who is making a name for herself as a silversmith she has just won the best newcomer award at the british silver week festival she worked with year 10 pupils on a metal forging project and visitors were able to see the results of their work ­ stylistically designed cutlery ­ at the design and technology department s end of term exhibition an oak chaise longue made by lewis porto and a black american walnut silver plated cutlery designed and storage cabinet by fergus forged by year 10 was on show at snell both attracted the design and technology plenty of attention exhibition winning performances pictured with their awards at the end of king s junior music festival finalists concert are from left katie diss voice years 5 6 section bedford school director of music andrew morris adjudicator saskia porter-thaw cello years 7 8 victoria davis flute years 3 4 and king s junior director of music neil porter-thaw actor-in-residence has star credentials benjamin o mahony has been appointed king s ely s new actor-in-residence he trained as a dancer before deciding to pursue a career as a professional actor before beginning his training at drama centre london he worked with the royal shakespeare company and the national theatre and made his film debut alongside natalie portman and scarlett johannson in the other boleyn girl since graduating in 2010 he has worked extensively in the theatre both in the west end and on broadway and has just finished filming a new series called hurst for sky television he is benjamin o mahony currently appearing in the world premiere of mark ravenhill s new play the mother in 2010 he won the hobsons prize an annual award made to discover new actors with a natural distinctive voice quality and an aptitude for voice-over work nick huntington who came to king s four years ago as the school s second actor-inresidence has since qualified as a teacher and left ely at the end of the summer term to take up the post of head of drama at lansdowne college an independent sixth form college in kensington 5

king s news royal wedding celebrations the royal wedding was celebrated at king s acremont with a `street party the play area outside the hall was decked with red white and blue bunting and balloons lunch was an outdoor picnic on tables decorated in a royal theme each child wore a crown they had made during the morning out and about in the summer sun wicken wonder cerys jones william alvarez-garmon sophia garrard jack hammond and catherine raynes at wicken fen year 2 enjoy the view at lackford lakes beside the seaside at hunstanton the nursery s outing to wicken fen and year 2 s trip to lackford lakes took place on the hottest day of the year nursery children and their parents enjoyed discovering `mini beasts and distinguishing between moths and butterflies everyone walked on the board walk around the fen lackford lakes in suffolk is a nature reserve which has been created by flooding disused gravel pits the children went pond dipping and bird watching from hides overlooking the six lakes on another sunny day year 1 set off by coach for hunstanton where they enjoyed a visit to the sealife sanctuary and were captivated by walking through the shark tunnel after lunch time on the beach was spent collecting shells and making sandcastles year 2 went by train to cambridge where they visited the fitzwilliam museum exploring the egyptian rooms and walked to the botanical gardens where they were fascinated by the cacti and plants in the tropical greenhouse 6

king s news outdoor performances of canterbury tales action king george gilligan widow of bath emma jones old hag laura day and knight henry macdonald pictures mark ewing every one of the 30 year 9 and year 10 pupils who auditioned was rewarded with a speaking role in canterbury tales staged outdoors in the arts courtyard for two nights during the final week of the summer term five directors each adapted one of chaucer s tales drama teacher nick huntington directed the pardoner s tale and head of lamda geoffrey robertson directed the knight s tale the other directors were frank danes head of english the reeve s tale steven merrell head of film and media studies the nun s priest s tale and mack mathod head of photography the franklin s tale master of ceremonies alec prieto top left with some of the cast of canterbury tales steve cunningham who powered to world speed records on land and sea and found international media fame as the world s first blind pilot few people in the audience at king s junior prize giving in ely cathedral will forget guests speaker steve cunningham `the fastest blind man on the planet the world disappeared from his view one sunny day as the green and picturesque malvern hills became shrouded in a sinister creeping grey mist confused and very lonely he found himself totally and irreversibly blind he was 12 years old fastest blind man on the planet but steve is a remarkable person he battled and overcame more barriers than most people will ever face and his deeply-moving story told of his journey from despair to success his core message is that anyone can break barriers that the path to true success is in your mind and not your ability or environment the former captain of the england blind football team does have one handicap in life golf he plays off 24 7

king s news a music lesson inspired asia choudhry and emily james to write a song galaxy which has been played on radio and downloaded from the internet not only have did the 11-year-olds write the music and lyrics but calling themselves originality they designed their own logo made a recording and uploaded the song onto itunes and the amazon website the girls efforts attracted the attention of commercial station star radio and they were invited to record an interview for the breakfast show they plan to give a proportion of the money raised from downloads to great ormond street children s hospital charity music lesson inspires `originality composers asia choudhry left and emily james picture cambridge evening news ely cathedral girls choir gave a world premiere at choral evensong in ely cathedral when composer alexander campkin was there to hear the first performance of his settings of the magnificat and nunc dimittis for upper voices and organ director of the girls choir sarah macdonald said it was a privilege for us all and alexander was delighted that the girls sang his settings so well alexander is rapidly making a girls choir gives world premiere name for himself as a composer and conductor of instrumental and choral music he studied music at the university of oxford where he was choral scholar at st catherine s college assistant organ scholar at trinity college and conductor of the oxford chamber choir and arcadian singers of oxford university he took a masters at the royal academy of music and a postgraduate diploma in vienna at the universität für musik the girl choristers served cream teas in the courtyard of the canonry ­ their boarding house beside the cathedral ­ and made a profit of £450 to be shared between the girls choir funds and teenage cancer trust the girls and their housemistress melody day and matron jane carter prepared plain sultana and cheese scones shortbread victoria sandwich and coffee and chocolate cakes ­ all freshly baked and served with a pot of tea or coffee or soft drinks king s junior pupil lucy green a founder member of ely imps and a member of the national youth choir anna willis from st john s school cambridge and ursule taujanskas from lithuania successfully auditioned for the three available year 9 girls choristerships and join the choir in september and get a taste for baking alexander campkin with ely cathedral girls choir and their director sarah macdonald far right a taste for baking girl choristers from left oona gradwell fiona campbell sophie hudson emma jones annie green maxine eddleston georgia schneider and beth poole with their organist oliver hancock pictured at the cake stall they ran at the etheldreda fair which raised £233 for girls choir funds and teenage cancer trust 9

king s news charlotte emms has become a martin doyle winner for the second year in a row ­ emulating the success of her elder sister holly the tough annual challenge run under the auspices of ely scheme involves two members of each senior school house in a gruelling test of stamina and fitness a five kilometre run tackling the braham farm assault course canoeing four kilometres to ely scaling the climbing wall shooting and archery completing the local assault course and finishing with four lengths of the school pool named after the founding father of ely family double in the martin doyle challenge scheme it is a great challenge in which to compete let alone complete charlotte year 11 and georgia baynes year 10 claimed victory for withburga following a 2010 success for the house when charlotte partnered flavia kumar holly emms who was also in withburga partnered lizzie east to win in 2008 and maia tanner in 2009 to make 2011 even more of a family event charlotte s twin sophie and milly green came second for etheldreda the house with the smallest number of pupils ­ the 16 girl choristers nearly there charlotte and georgia swim the last few lengths of the pool smiles of success withburga s charlotte emms left and georgia baynes elated kevin yun and david bercow celebrate success for hereward taking aim eltheldreda s milly green left and sophie emms getting creative with chewing gum media challenge winners front from left isla holdsworth jessie sharp and oliver hinton with from left niki howlett david noble and robin howlett the year 10 media studies class enjoyed a `media morning after talks by graphic and corporate designers robin and niki howlett and public relations executive david noble who spoke about campaigns they had worked on ­ everything from lemsip to wonderbra ­ students were set the task of generating names advertising and pr for a variety of products and to present them for judging oliver hinton jessie sharp and isla holdsworth most impressed the professionals with their creative ideas for a new chewing gum biology teacher paul lott and chris pyle deputy head of curriculum at the perse school cambridge paddled 125 miles from devizes in wiltshire to london s westminster bridge in a double kayak and raised over £3,000 to help provide clean water for families in ghana the challenge was in support of the charity international needs and helped build a borehole for a village in the volta region of ghana where contaminated water is a killer contaminated water is the world s largest cause of death in young children and clean water is one of the greatest gifts we can give said mr lott teachers paddle up river for water kayak challenge paul lott back and chris pyle on the water 10

king s news budding entrepreneurs in year 6 have been running four competing enterprise projects selling flowers fruit berries and vegetables the ten and 11-year-olds promoted their products through flyers web pages advertising jingles and posters each group ­ the fruity freaks green team flower power and the berry cups ­ was given a £25 start-up fund key stage 2 maths co-ordinator cate middleton said the children carried out market research worked out unit costs and the percentage of profit per item so there has been a huge amount of maths involved enterprise adds up for mathematicians in the project we have encouraged the pupils to think about the sort of decisions involved in running a business they were amazing out-performing all our expectations one of the groups decided to offer entry into a raffle with every order placed and wrote to tesco who have donated a gift voucher as a prize all profits will be shared between great ormond street hospital and the shelton trust which was set up to rebuild schools in sri lanka which were destroyed by the tsunami orders orders representatives of the groups of king s junior school year 6 pupils who are using their maths skills to make a profit for charities making their debut young drummer theo kennedy young music-makers and actors staged a concert in the recital hall everyone at king s acremont who has music lessons plays in the recorder group or has started speech and drama had the chance to perform senior school s director of music ian sutcliffe was delighted to see so many children are taking music lessons the king s junior concert band and jazz band enjoyed a five day tour to paris their concert at disneyland paris was watched by hundreds of visitors they also played in luxembourg gardens and at a delighting the crowds at disneyland paris retirement home in st denis as well as enjoying performing in glorious locations the children enjoyed a boat trip on the seine a trip up the eiffel tower and a whole day on the rides at disneyland performing at disneyland with king s junior director of music neil porterthaw conducting king s fashion and textiles students are preparing work for a collaborative exhibition at the royal ballet covent garden from 10-14 october nine independent schools will be showcasing excellence quality and diversity in fashion design scores of visitors toured king s summer exhibition and were impressed by displays of as and a2 coursework and work by year 9 and gcse pupils royal ballet exhibition concert band entertains at aquafest visitors to ely aquafest which attracted thousands to watch raft races on 3 july were entertained by king s concert band who gave two halfhour performances in the city s riverside jubilee gardens bandstand economics and business studies students raised £530 for barnardo s after being accepted to join the children s charity s business incentive scheme for schools barnardo s provide £120 start-up capital and ask students to put their business idea into practice with the aim of making £500 net profit king s budding bransons ran an `everything 50p tuck shop from their teacher malcolm ewan s classroom at break-time on fridays selling doughnuts soft drinks chocolate snacks and crisps they presented a cheque for £650 to barnardo s which included the initial £120 start-up capital doing business for barnardo s 11
