t hey say even cowgirls get the blues and if ever one had a reason it would be billi-jo murray terri said she would do anything to make her daughter better you get into this mindset all you want to do is make your baby better the 28-year-old said it has been horrible but i would go to the end of the earth to make her well after her daughter s third relapse doctors decided to do a stem cell transplant while in sydney for the collection her temperature soared to 41.3 degrees and she was rushed to the sydney children s hospital emergency ward where she had litres of fluid and two blood transfusions to help keep her alive we were told she might not come out of hospital but being the battler she is she did terri said after a couple of weeks to fully recover we would again attempt the stem cell collection i really don t know how my baby survived that week i have never been so scared and so able to stay awake for days on end to just watch her sleep and try to recover for me she is stronger than anyone i have ever met after the transplant billi-jo was in complete isolation for four weeks before being moved to john hunter for a further four weeks before being allowed home because of the treatment she would not eat and was on a lot of supplements at one stage terri said her little girl was down to 17 kilograms as she would only manage to drink water for weeks at a time despite being given a 10 per cent chance of survival after her most recent relapse this at just seven years old billi-jo has visited hospital more times than she can remember gone without food for more than two weeks and fought her way back from death twice the brave beechwood cowgirl is determined to beat the hand life has dealt her despite being diagnosed with bilateral wilms tumour a cancer of the kidneys the discovery of a tiny lump on her 10-monthold belly at a routine doctor s appointment six years ago landed billi-jo in hospital 12 hours later after eight days of tests the doctors at john hunter hospital in newcastle confirmed it was cancer at the time of her diagnosis her mum terri murray was shell shocked then came the feelings of helplessness as she watched her previously perfectly healthy baby battle through chemotherapy followed by surgery to remove her left kidney and 20 per cent of the right one after a year of chemotherapy billi-jo was in remission but the fight was far from over she relapsed two-and-a-half years later in 2007 after more surgery to remove tumours in her kidney she went into remission again however six months later scans revealed the worst news there was more cancer bill is just amazing and so resilient terri said from her 10-hectare beechwood property about 30km west of port macquarie she does everything a normal kid would do even though the many trips to the hospital and awful treatments have been difficult photos by kylie biltris 4 lifestyle magazine

music aficionado sheriden sommerly started her dream choir in january but used what some may consider a controversial method she held auditions the 57-year-old hastings music teacher said telling people they were not suitable for the choir she envisaged was difficult but necessary it was quite problematic to have auditions and say no you can t be part of this choir the mother-ofthree explained but i had to have the courage to do that twenty-one people auditioned for the outfit and from that six women were selected to form quintessence sheriden s aim for the handpicked group is to create peaceful meditative music an opportunity to transport people from their busy lives to a place the everyday does not take them i wanted the choir members to be able to read music relatively well and i wanted the group to be able to perform sacred music sheriden said to date the seven-member group which includes sheriden has only had one performance and it was invite-only until the relevant red tape has been worked through their beautiful sounds will only be heard by friends and family however within the year the group plans on public performances at weddings funerals and whatever functions it may be invited to perform sheriden has loved music since her childhood she remembers filling up milk bottles to make instruments and admiring her musical mum she has taught music in a variety of schools since 1977 and started a choir in just about every one of them a bit of tough love was needed to start one of port macquarie s newest choirs sheriden spent most of her early years in sydney and later studied languages at the university of sydney she said she rarely thought about what career she would have similar to many in her generation she went to work with the department of education and has continued working with young people ever since while in sydney she met and married conrad and they had three children however after 14 years together the pair made the painful decision to part ways i used to play two pieces of music pretty much every day but now i don t listen to them anymore sheriden said that part of my life is over and music really helped me through that as well as starting choirs and teaching music sheriden has worked in a music shop and also plays the piano and flute some of her favourite pieces of music include the symphony of sorrowful songs and music which really builds which is something quintessence specialises in we performed nonnobis which is a latin round which means not to our glory but to thy glory oh lord sheriden said it goes `round and `round in a circle the other pieces include a celtic tune and a simple piece from a latin mass the group specialises in madrigals which is a secular part song without instrumental accompaniment and antiphonals which is a verse or song chanted or sung in response it takes a great deal of commitment and time to learn the pieces which involve learning a new language the group practices at least two hours a week something it needs for the difficult or unusual melodies it often sings two hours of practice is a big commitment and the choir members have been great sheriden said when they did the audition i showed them a set of rules so that no one coming in would think they could come and go as they please she said the choir had worked hard with the unusual pieces she had selected and hoped one day they would put together a cd however she also doesn t want to rush things they have done such a great job in the six months we ve been together and i m happy to wait a while for the cd she said a decision to return to university last year was the catalyst she needed to form quintessence going back to university in melbourne with people in their 20s and 30s brought me face to face with the fact that i m not 30 even though i think i am sheriden said it made me realise that i have to do what i want to do now and not put it off alison kennedy joanne kerr yolanda sanders sylvia scott betty starr and anna veres are very glad sheriden did not put off her dream for any longer the six women have enjoyed the challenges she has set them and hope they can soon share their unique musical talents with the wider hastings community by terri thomson www.lifestylepublications.com.au 11

remaining focused on the long term whilst times like these can make investors nervous and rightly so it is also very important at times like this to remain focused on the long term and to understand that volatility is a natural characteristic of the sharemarket history shows us two key learnings firstly the sharemarket usually recovers after experiencing declines and secondly for those who continue to have longer timeframes and are comfortable with volatility it is important to ride out the volatility we understand investors concerns in times of heightened market volatility whilst the risks and volatility inherent in investing may seem to prevail at times losing track of long-term objectives by focusing on the short term poses a far greater risk to achieving longer-term goals than any past or present economic event while times like these may cause investors to question their investment strategies and consider increasing investments in cash and short-term moneymarket products this course of action may result in being worse off in the long run as opposed to staying with a well diversified plan and riding out the volatility history has demonstrated that a large proportion of investors invest near market peaks and sell near market lows while investing at market peaks is not the most favourable entry point as markets grow over the long term timing becomes less relevant times like this also remind us of the importance of understanding the risks contained within your portfolio and having a well diversified portfolio across and within asset classes diversification and a focus on the long term will continue to remain vital ingredients in the achievement of your goals it is important you consult with your financial adviser and notify them of any material changes to your situation needs or objectives so the advice given continues to remain appropriate it is also important you remain comfortable with your asset allocation if you would like to arrange an appointment to discuss your situation please call carol round on 6583 9748 for a complimentary first consultation 4/157 gordon street port macquarie p 02 6583 9748 f 02 6584 4972 admin@allroundfinancial.com.au 12 lifestyle magazine this advice may not be suitable to you because it contains general advice that has not been tailored to your personal circumstances please contact your financial adviser prior to acting on this information

did you know known as settlement farm it was located along the hastings river between the area of the hibbard ferry and settlement point and was established in the latter part of 1821 governor lachlan macquarie had named the area allman s plains after the settlement s first commandant and had recommended cultivation t what s on eric bogle 21 august 8.00pm eric s small pension optimisation tour guarantees to be an unforgettable night of melody sharp wit and outrageous fun tickets $37 members $34 hat port macquarie once had an agricultural garden winter orchid bromeliad show 27-28 august from 9.00am presented by port macquarie orchid bromeliad society adults $2 children $1 with mitch mckay be undertaken while not particularly successful it is believed that it remained in use until the late 1820s in november 1837 the farm was auctioned off divided into twelve allotments one of the allotments was sold to john terry hughes and another to william manners clarke these two allotments were subsequently purchased by dr william bell carlyle and it was to this estate he gave the name hamilton and it was from here that he operated a vineyard in 1844 carlyle died but not before his estate had been mortgaged to sarah maria hamilton from 1850 the property changed hands several times but still remained a vineyard eventually the property was purchased by john hibbard snr and phillip haines hibbard and haines were established sawmillers who had operated for many years in the shoalhaven on the new south wales south coast haines was born at trevethin wales in 1834 and hibbard was born at bath england also in 1834 it is thought that they had met in 1855 on their way to the colony of new south wales on the ship `gloriana which had left from london the journey took 106 days and both were listed as sawyers in 1857 haines was joined by his sister maria who had arrived on the ship `glen isla and in 1858 maria married hibbard how hibbard and maria met is uncertain but we do know that hibbard and haines remained in the shoalhaven until 1877 when they relocated their business to the camden haven however in 1878 owing to difficulties experienced in getting teams to draw logs they moved their mill to the hastings river their new mill was established initially on leasehold land belonging to j.h young and company of sydney and on 6 july 1887 they purchased the site from the trustees and the executors of the estate of john macdonald ebenezer macdonald and james henry young and also francis jenkins macdonald for £900 this would suggest that their mill operated for some time on the leased land the mill stood where the edgewater holiday park now stands to be continued next month ladies day 29 august 10.00am spring is in the air three s company entertain fashion parade special guest tickets $7 members $5 includes morning tea mcalister kemp 3 september 8.00pm winner of `best new talent 2011 country music awards of australia tickets $22 members $18 4 september from 8.00am special 5 course buffet breakfast guests $21.50 members $18.50 children u/12 $14.50 bookings essential plus jumping castle 11.00am-3.00pm father s day raffle from 12 noon father s day 4 september 1.00pm with piano man ken bennett a musical tribute to the greatest hits of the golden era tickets $11 members $8 jon doyle thirsty merc 9 september 8.00pm star fm presents one of australia s most loved bands over 18 s only tickets $30 members $27.50 hibbard s mill c1929 photograph courtesy of june fowler 1 bay street port macquarie nsw 2444 www.panthers.com.au ph 6580 2300 www.lifestylepublications.com.au 13
