what s in the newsletter this week parkland hub naming parkland items stars of the week measles swimming whanau/family support meeting hearing/vision screening technology challenge visiting performer parkland pride puzzler middle team trip scholastic book club daffodil day rise to the challenge dear parents what an exciting week we have had throughout the country certainly for palmerston north the snow has been quite a treat there has been plenty of fantastic writing as a result of all the fun things children have done in the snow like building snowmen and having snow fights in the next few weeks you will receive a survey sheet about parkland school s health pe programme we want to find out what you think the health needs are for our children what should we be including in our health programme that is not already there fantastic to see that on average 60 of our students are involved in sporting activities outside the school there is a huge range of sports activities available to our children and obviously many are taking advantage of what s on offer room 13 have begun their involvement with the very successful `plant to plate programme this week students will be involved in a very practical way with the growing and cooking of healthy foods 2012 term dates a number of people have asked about term dates for next year these will be confirmed at tonight s bot meeting and will then be placed on the hub and will also be included in the next newsletter.

parkland stars of the week judo congratulations to nina kereama-stevenson room 2 who gained a silver medal in the under 28kg weight class at the wellington judo tournament she was part of a team representing the palmerston north judo club based at parkland school manawatu representative football congratulations to aniela jensen and kate watson who have been selected for the <11 years girls manawatu representative football squad room 3 s awesome writer ami petherbridge parent information the measles outbreaks in auckland and waikato are mainly affecting unimmunised school children by 8 august 175 measles cases had been reported this year including 19 who needed hospital treatment most cases were in the auckland region although 24 cases were reported in hawke s bay this year in the past week 12 cases have been reported in the waikato region mainly around te awamutu measles symptoms measles is a highly infectious disease and is more serious than many people realise symptoms include fever cough red eyes and a runny nose and then a rash which develops after about three days complications can include middle ear infections pneumonia and more rarely encephalitis or brain inflammation about one in ten people infected need to be hospitalised the best measles prevention is the measles mumps and rubella mmr vaccine which is free for all new zealand children.

swimming thank you to everyone who returned the swimming slips last week these will be used to group swimmers swimming instructors will then assess those groups and may change one or two to meet their swimming needs swimming costs the cost of the swimming programme is substantial but it is crucial that our children learn these important and at times lifesaving skills the cost of transportation to the pools is $3700 the cost of the freyberg pool and instructors is $8000 the cost to parents will be $30 per child which is an increase on the last two years but still equates to a very reasonable $4 per lesson whanau family support meeting in a new initiative we will be holding a meeting to explore the level of interest from parkland families in establishing a whanau support group all families are welcome to attend this meeting will be held on thursday 25 august in the school library a video will be showing in room 2 for any children who need to attend time 7pm 8pm hearing vision screening the next visit for the vision hearing technician is friday september 9th new entrants and any children who do not have a record will be screened parents can make referrals by phoning the vision hearing service on 0800 153 042 0r 06 350 4560 technology challenge senior team congratulations to the haunted nightmares who won the technology challenge in the senior team there were some very creative responses to the problems presented.
