alms 2010-2011 newsletter july 29 2011 dear parents welcome to and welcome back to andrew lewis middle school the newsletter you are receiving contains information necessary for the beginning of the school year the newsletter is a key information source which will help your child be successful at andrew lewis remember one of our goals is to teach your child responsibility as a student and as a citizen with your help this can be accomplished in the three short years they are students at alms wishing you and your child a successful 2011-12 school year i hope you find this information helpful however if we can provide further information please call us at 540 3872513 sincerely dr forest i jones principal important this newsletter contains important information please read it carefully and keep it for reference throughout the school year updated and revised information is included throughout the document 1st period begins at 8:35am 1

student fees/schedules yearbook pta and gym suit fees will be collected on the first day of school a list of fees is included in this newsletter thanks to volunteers thank you to the many volunteers that supported the alms pta the 2011-12 school year from putting names on gym suits to weekly office volunteers we could not have done it without you we appreciate all of your hard work and the many hours that you volunteer school fees make checks payable to andrew lewis middle school gymsuit 10.00optional 5shirt 5 shorts yearbook 30.00optional lewis times subscription free-online pta membership 3.00optional parents joining the pta qualify their student for pta incentives 2

students who are participating in a physical education class are required to dress in appropriate clothing students may purchase a gym suit from the school for $10 wear their gym suit from the previous year or bring a solid gray tee-shirt and maroon or burgundy shorts from home please note that clothing brought from home must not display images or wording of any kind and must comply with the salem city schools dress code please send payment with your student on the first school day insurance forms will be given out the first week of school agenda book in an effort to help students be organized and to plan effectively the school provides an agenda book for each student this book is multi-purpose in it are school regulations the school calendar and other very useful information the book also serves as a hall pass for students to use when they are out of the classroom most importantly the agenda book has a daily planning guide where students can record and keep track of all their grades it is also an effective communication tool between the parent and the classroom teacher students are required to 1 bring their agenda books to class and to take them home daily 2 record assignments and hall pass entries in ink 3 care for their agenda books excessive damage or loss will result in a replacement charge of $6.00 3

fall sports girls volleyball tryouts will be held on august 1st-5th from 8:00-11:00a.m students must have a current vhsl physical in order to try out bring a drink football equipment will be issued july 28th from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m at the salem high school field house equipment must be picked up by players no uniforms will be issued to parents practice starts monday august 1 2011 8:00 -10:00a.m and 10:45-12:15p.m bring a snack and drink you must have a physical in order to try out and be issued a uniform important new sport regulations 1 all students must have a signed vhsl physical before they can try out for a sport 2 all students must have a signed drug pledge card 3 all students have a signed concussion policy card 4

8 be neat and well groomed 9 always come prepared with school materials 10 develop good study habits 11 use correct english at all times and use proper language 12 support all school activities be proud of your school rules of student conduct we believe that pupils of middle school age are capable of exercising self-discipline their responsibilities are continually increasing in the school home and community and their acceptance of these responsibilities should be displayed continually through the school year when students do not exercise acceptable self-control it becomes the duty of the teachers and administrators to impose other methods to insure an effective instructional program and to maintain the well-being of the physical plant for these reasons we wish to state the following policies which must be followed by all students at all times please note the school division publishes a conduct code separately from this newsletter copies of the conduct code will be provided to each student but should a student need one extra copies or reference copies are available in the guidance office and the school division administrative 9

offices select regulations from that code are repeated for emphasis fireworks and dangerous weapons firing displaying or threatening use of firearms explosives knives or other weapons or potential weapons including toys and look alikes on school property is a violation of law and shall not be tolerated fireworks like firecrackers poppers cherry bombs stink bombs etc are also prohibited students possessing them on school property are subject to having these items confiscated and are subject to disciplinary action consequences may include 10 day suspension referral to the assistant superintendent of salem city schools for consideration of possible long term suspension or expulsion and a report to the police with a recommendation to prosecute drugs alcohol as one of its major tasks the school is responsible for providing a safe and healthy environment conducive to wholesome living and effective learning to provide such an environment at a time when drug abuse is a serious social and health problem the school board hereby establishes policies and procedures relative to drug abuse in the schools and on school property this is necessary so that all school personnel students as well as employees local health agencies local law enforcement officials parents and citizens of the community are aware of the role the school will play in any 10

situation involving the use of drugs in school violations of the drug and alcohol policy including paraphernalia and look alikes are dealt with in an appropriately serious manner consequences include 10 day suspension referral to the assistant superintendent of salem city schools for consideration of possible long term suspension or expulsion and a report to the police with a recommendation to prosecute assault violence physical and verbal abuse is not tolerated in salem s schools such acts may be the basis for referral to the assistant superintendent of salem city schools for consideration of possible long term suspension or expulsion from school and prosecution in the courts or civil suit tobacco the use and possession of tobacco by students in all schools is prohibited state law makes it illegal for those under 18 years of age to purchase or possess tobacco products current school board policy prohibits students from possessing smoking or using tobacco products while under school supervision failure to comply with the above will result in disciplinary action display of affection public demonstration of affection at school is not appropriate behavior holding hands hugging caressing or kissing are not permitted in school parents will be notified if students fail to 11

conduct themselves in a proper manner and disciplinary measures will be taken leaving school grounds once a student leaves for school he/she is under the jurisdiction of the school and must abide by school rules a student is not permitted to leave school grounds before school or between classes without written permission failure to follow this rule may result in saturday in-school suspension or out of school suspension dress and grooming andrew lewis middle school exists to provide students with an education not to provide an audience for student fashions appropriate school clothing adds to student morale both in the classroom and in the halls.the dress code is designed to serve as guidelines for our students parents are to assume the basic responsibility for their youngster s grooming the following guidelines prevail 1 clothing and accessories that contain vulgar derogatory violent or suggestive diagrams pictures slogans or words that may be interpreted as offensive and which cause or are likely to cause a disruption within the school environment 2 tank tops tube tops mesh tops sheer tops halters bare midriff tops or tops with shoulder straps less than three inches widethe width of an index card 12

3 tops cannot have necklines that are lower than the straight line from top of underarms across to opposite underarm 4 pants worn low on the hip so as to reveal underwear or skin clothing must cover undergarments at all times 5 dresses skirts skorts and shorts that are shorter than five inchesthe length of an index card above the knee cap 6 head coverings of any kind 7 sunglasses or permanently tinted dark glasses violation may result in disciplinary action socials during the course of the year we will have socials for our students neat dress is required and all other school rules apply students who are suspended out of school oss the week of a social or assigned saturday in-school suspension siss the saturday immediately before or after a social are not permitted to attend socials will be held from 3:30-5:00 students need to be picked up promptly stealing theft is not tolerated parents will be notified and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken theft may be handled with law enforcement agencies 13

cheating cheating will not be tolerated appropriate consequences will be taken and parents will be notified electronic devices portable audio equipment electronic toys/games pagers cell phones laser pointers and other similar electronic devices are not permitted in the school building cell phones are to be disabled upon arrival to school and remain disabled until the end of the school day cell phones shall be stored in student lockers during the day chewing gum gum gets placed on furniture clothing and floors gum chewing is not permitted teacher s workroom no student will be permitted in the teachers workroom or faculty lunchroom materials students are required to bring materials for each class a student will be given two weeks to replace a lost book student s name and teacher s name should be printed inside the front cover in ink 14

a sse mblies assemblies will be held on a scheduled basis orderly courteous conduct is expected during assembly programs no booing or whistling will be tolerated give attention to the speaker show appreciation by applause when the assembly is over leave in an orderly manner the s.c.a and class officers will help preside at assemblies contributions collection of contributions for worthy or needy projects or persons will be conducted by sca representatives or officers collections or sales not sponsored by the school are not allowed visitors student visitors are not permitted other visitors must report to the office upon entering the building during school hours to sign in and receive a visitor identification badge telephone office telephones are not for personal use and cell phones are not allowed to be used during the school day a telephone is located in the main office for student use only in emergency situations use of telephone requires a phone pass please limit calls tardy to class because of phone use is not acceptable lockers lockers belong to the school not to the student 15
