introduction a brief historical overview of fundraising and philanthropy for those interested in history the history of fundraising goes back many thousands of years an ancient babylonian king writing nearly 4,000 years ago entreats his subjects to see that justice be done to widows orphans and the poor there are earlier references to philanthropy but the babylonian code of hammurabi is the most concise moses nearly 3,500 years ago appears to be the originator of the tithe at that time this meant giving one tenth of the harvest s yield the tithe was to be given to the lord to be used to support the religious system ­ and for the relief of the poor in addition every seventh year the fields lay fallow and the poor were allowed to pick any new areas of growth philanthropy became an important part of jewish life ­ even from the earliest days in asia buddha formed a religion based on personal restraint and charity to the poor the kings of the region donated money to fund missionaries and in doing so became some of history s earliest and biggest donors the ancient wonder of the world ­ the library of alexandria in egypt was founded as an early act of philanthropy scholars from all over the civilised world came to study and exchange knowledge at this fabulous centre of learning the christian era heralded a new age of philanthropy love and concern for mankind were two key features of the new religion from very early days the christians organised church funds to feed the needy later orphanages alms houses shelters and hospitals were set up ­ all out of church funds in the middle ages the merchant-banker class was generous in supporting work and programs to overcome poverty and disease ­ a major problem of the period the big growth in modern fundraising took place in america the social structure of the country in the 19th century required a great deal of generous philanthropic support universities and colleges were formed through large donations from a small number of wealthy supporters from this point on as society became more and more affluent the greater became the task to raise funds for societies needs the fundraising ideas book 11
