country ride restoring a memory story by adam brooks for some owning a dream car you might start hearing names like mercedes porsche royce and chevelle chevelle 1969 to be precise roger vanbrocklin and his brother randy have had more than their share of chevelles but this one has something special that the other ones didn t have see back when randy the younger of the two was just about eight years old he remembers sitting in his older brother s car as he would rev up the motor the car would sway from side to side a rumbling roar of power was heard as the headers popped with each pump of the gas pedal that car was very distinct in more ways than just one that particular car was yellow in color with black stripes on the hood and a symbol on the finder that simply spelled ss starting to sound familiar 8 one day back in 1998 when roger was on his way to work he saw a car off in a field next to a barn with grass grown all up around it i pulled in to this old service station and asked the man if he would sell me the car the man said no but i ll give it to you if you buy the car that s inside that old barn roger explained he had no idea what to expect and the man in the store didn t even know what kind of car was in the old barn i walked in and there was a tarp over the car i pulled it back and saw this purple 1969 chevelle roger has a history of wanting to buy his little brother his dream car in fact he had more than 15 in his driveway at one point in time randy always said he wanted a purple one recalled roger so when he saw this one he went back to the store and

asked the man how much he wanted for the car i called randy and told him that i just bought a car and would he come help me pick it up when randy was younger he drew a picture of his dream car he actually had two dream cars roger said one was a purple chevelle and the other was a lamborghini i knew i could never afford a lamborghini but a chevelle was more in my price range the car appeared to be in perfect shape one of the best they d seen but we all know looks can be deceiving the first thing to start the remodeling stages was to get it running we started by putting in a 396 big block and a new transmission switching it from an automatic to a muncie 4 speed they drove the car around for years until they had the money to redo the paint and body work our friend had to rebuild the pieces because this was before they started making them aftermarket randy says one of the highlights was trying to find all the parts it was amazing how i would just be talking to someone i never met before and they would have a piece i needed after making some other modifications like changing the transmission again to a 5 speed tremec it was only a matter of deciding what color the car would be roger just assumed it would be purple like the car randy had drawn years ago but when he asked his little brother to make the final call surprisingly randy chose the daytona yellow with black stripes roger recalls i was surprised at his decision randy admitted that his dream car was a purple car but after all this time he knew it had to be the yellow with black stripes after all that s the car that started the obsession t 9

w story by jack sparreaux ho knew in fact who could know that the beaumont man who has taken on almost mythical status as a landowner legal titan and charitable benefactor would most quickly light into the smile that has transfixed scores of juries when he talks about ranch life this is one wild horse anti-marlboro maverick who keeps it close to the leather vest holding forth from the head of a 20 yard long conference table in a simple open-collar sky blue business shirt and gray slacks the senior managing partner of provost-umphrey law firm looks at ease if not downright content you can imagine him talking about the hunt over a campfire with a 12 gauge shotgun slung across his leg even though we re only feet from a plush law firm waiting room replete with a palatial staircase and a glass case containing a dallas cowboys replica helmet plated in silver you get the sense this man would be happier out in nature we know fairly little of thomas walter umphrey who is the 93rd largest landowner in the world u.s land because of how closely he has honed his use of public comments when we inquired if he did a lot of media his answer came in a trinity of verbosity not really no he said umphrey can t remember the last time he sat for a profile television interview about his life and rarely speaks with print reporters for longer than it takes to deliver volcanic praise for a cause or charity like lamar university or the hughen center for kids that he and his wife sheila love no wonder we re surprised when we hear that superlawyer walter umphrey holds an enduring love for the country my deal is i love the outdoors i love to hunt and fish and ranch and travel i just love the outdoors period umphrey told country pride magazine recently why own soooo much land the i think i relate to the workin man a helluva lot better than i do the businessman beauty of it he told us i just want to preserve that that s probably the only recreation that i have i enjoy just being outdoors i have my own big tractor and i can run my office from that tractor that s a lot of office work indeed in the early 90 s umphrey fulfilled a goal of owning a million acres of land somewhere and then he tripled it buying ranches in australia that eventually totaled 3.2 million acres umphrey ran 85,000 head of cattle on the ranches before selling it about 10 years ago if umphrey remains an elusive figure in airing his opinions www.countrypridemag.com 15
