ROLAND-STORY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT October 2016 ! Agriculture Education The Agriculture Education department is off and running this fall in both the classroom as well !as the FFA organization. This fall semester we are offering classes in Agriculture Education I, Meteorology, Advanced !Animal Science, Agricultural Mechanics, Independent study and Biology. We are offering two sections this year of the Agriculture Education I class. Our class is utilizing the CASE (curriculum for agriculture science education) curriculum entitled AFNR (agriculture food and natural resources) in which the students are learning about agriculture opportunities and careers. Future lessons deal with leadership, communications and sciences as they !relate to the field of agriculture. The Agricultural Mechanics class is currently working on a unit involving the operations of small gas engines. Future units include the areas of: hydraulics, plumbing, electricity and wiring, !machinery management, and concrete. This fall we are offering a single section of Meteorology class. The students are learning about !climate and weather and the factors that influence both. In the Advanced Animal Science class, the students are using the STEM based curriculum from CASE. The class is a foundational level course where students explore the world of animal agriculture and develop a management guide for an animal of their choice. Areas of study include history and domestication, handling and behavior, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, reproduction, !genetics, health, selection, and marketing. In the Biology section being taught this fall, the course is developed to expose students to the world of biology integration and career options while focusing on animal and plant life. Students participating in the biology course will have experiences in various animal and plant science concepts !with hands-on activities, projects, and problems. Our FFA chapter finished the summer with activities at the State Fair where members showed livestock – swine, sheep and horses, displayed photography, had horticultural entry’s and participation in the Agricultural Demonstrations division. The two Roland-Story groups finished first and second in !the Agricultural Demonstrations and Presentation division with their topic on DNA extraction. The FFA community garden continues to provide fresh produce to the local ‘Loaves and Fish’ food pantry. As of early September, the garden has provide nearly 5,000 pounds of items ranging from melons, sweet corn, root crops (potatoes, onions, radishes, beets, onions), eggplants, cabbage and lettuce, cucumbers, pumpkins, peas and beans, tomatoes and peppers and over products. News from Room 211 Since changing curriculum in LA II to American Literature a few years ago, I have been asked about my approach to teaching literature as it applies to history. I found these quotes from other !English teachers on a forum I visit and us them as a guide. “History shapes many forms of literature.  We tend to get ideas for literature from things that have happened.  Sometimes this comes in the form of non-fiction literature and sometimes it comes in the form of allegories or allusions.  We cannot fully understand a piece of literature unless we understand its history and the history of those that wrote it.  Thus, history can shape the way we view literature.  Of course, that works both ways.  Literature can also shape the way we view history.  It is said that history is written by the victors.  We don't always get the whole story of what happened in our literary histories.  Often, the history of a place is written down by the conquerors and survivors.  We might not see the whole truth of what happened.” WANNAM. The sophomores are currently studying The Crucible, Arthur Miller’s metaphorical comparison between the Puritans of 1692 and the radicals of the 1950’s McCarthy Era. It is true that the victors write history, but literature gives us the other side of that story. The literature we study brings us closer to understanding the humans behind the history. We also study American Literature to see what makes America unique and great. The masters of American Literature: Poe, Dickinson, Hawthorne, Whitman, Thoreau, etc., all give insights into !American philosophy that may not as clear in a history class. This year, the English department has added a new class to junior year. It is Communications Lab III. This class focuses on skill building, but also connects to Mr. Calvert’s World History class. The juniors work on papers and research that coincide with Mr. Calvert’s class. Norsemen 4!

ROLAND-STORY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT October 2016 !!!!!! HyperStream A new STEM program is starting at Roland-Story High School and Middle School this year. HyperStream is best described as a programming club, but it features a lot of different components, including cyber defense, app programming, robotics, and community service. HyperStream is part of the Governor’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) initiative. Students have started using MIT’s App Inventor to learn how to make smartphone apps, and there is a lot of !interest in the cyber defense component. DMACC Lit 101 Students are reading Bruce Watson’s Freedom Summer, which explores the voting registration drive in Mississippi in 1964. With this, students are exploring African-American literature, including Langston Hughes, Lorraine Hansberry, and Ralph Ellison. As part of this, students will be designing their own civic engagement project to coincide with this fall’s election. Students are also reading about literary and critical theory from The Theory Toolbox. One of the goals with the class this fall is how to take the theory !behind literature and take action in the world. Language Arts 3 Juniors in Language Arts 3 started the year exploring the concept of the monomyth from Joseph Campbell. Students wrote their own heroic narrative using Campbell’s ideas about the hero’s journey. After that, students have started reading Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World, which is a story about a young girl who starts receiving mysterious letters outlining the history of western philosophy. Students are working in small groups to discuss the novel as they read it, and they will explore one of the philosophers in more depth when they finish the novel. Sophie’s World will also be used in junior World History as a secondary text to help students understand how the history of thought !corresponds to major world events. TAG A purpose for students in the Talented and Gifted program at Roland-Story High School is to become a lifelong learner. Students have started this year with some goal setting, which they will use to develop an e-portfolio in Canvas. Once students set goals, they will start thinking about a way to implement their goals through a project for the year. Projects last year ranged from fashion design to computer coding to starting a Science Bowl team. In fact, the Science Bowl team is continuing this year, and it is looking to add more competitions, including a !participating in a Knowledge Bowl this October. Norsemen 5!

New  in  the  Library   Welcome  back  to  school!    I  am  excited  to  see  all  the  students  back  and  see  what  the   students  think  about  our  new  library  space!    We  have  a  lot  going  on  in  the  library  and  lots   of  new  books  available.    Check  us  out  at  https://sites.google.com/a/roland-­‐ !story.k12.ia.us/rshsimc/  .       • We  have  the  new  2016-­‐2017  Iowa  High  School  Award  and  Iowa  Teen  Award   books.       • We  continue  to  offer  a  few  new  Jiction  ebooks  for  online  reading  and   downloading.    We  hope  to  add  more  titles  throughout  the  school  year.  Check  out   the  library  catalog  –  click  the  ebooks  icon.   • We  also  offer  non-­‐Jiction  ebooks  through  MackinVia.    The  AEA  has  set  this  up  for   us  to  use.    There  is  a  link  on  our  library  webpage.    The  username  and  password  is   the  same  as  the  AEA  databases.    If  you  need  help  with  this,  please  contact  your   librarian.   • We  are  continuing  to  collaborate  with  the  Bertha  Bartlett  Library  for  research   needs.    We  are  using  the  Facts  on  File:  Issues  and  Controversies  from  their   website.    If  you  need  the  username  and  password,  see  your  school  librarian  or  the   librarians  at  the  Bertha  Bartlett  Library.   • Heartland  AEA  11  provides  us  access  to  a  variety  of  databases.    Links  are  provided   on  the  school  websites  to  these  databases.    Talk  to  your  librarian  if  you  need  a   username  and  password.   • The  library  was  remodeled  over  the  summer.    New  paint,  carpet,  furnishings  and  a   café  area  were  added  to  the  library.    Student  response  has  been  overwhelmingly   !!!!!!!!!positive!    Check  out  the  pictures  below!     !!!!!!! ROLAND-STORY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT October 2016 ! ROLAND-STORY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT October 2016 ! Physical  Education   Physical  Education  is  very  important  because  physically  active   children  have  a  greater  chance  of  being  Jit  for  a  lifetime.  Our  goal  is   to  give  them  advice  to  be  Jit  for  life  by  having  a  healthy  active   lifestyle.  The  lack  of  physical  activity  and  appropriate  nutrition  may   have  serious  consequences.  Daily  physical  activity  helps  build  and   maintain  healthy  bones,  muscles,  and  joints;  helps  control  body  weight  and  reduces  fat;   prevents  or  delays  the  development  of  high  blood  pressure;  improves  school   performances,  increases  blood  Jlow  and  oxygen  to  the  brain  which  may  help  improve   !memory  and  reduces  depression;  and  builds  self-­‐esteem. Mrs.  Braathun’s  5th  and  6th  grade  PE  classes  perform  a  wide  variety  of  activities  in  the   !areas  of  team  sports,  dance,  Jitness,  and  recreational  games. Throughout  the  year  students  have  been  participating  in  several  sports  including:  Jlag   football,  basketball,  volleyball,  and  soccer/speedball.  Some  of  the  goals  are  to  promote   good  sportsmanship,  teamwork,  and  fair  play.  Students  are  working  to  develop  basic   !skills  in  the  fundamentals  of  each  game  and  to  learn  the  rules  and  strategies. The  importance  of  lifetime  Jitness  is  stressed  throughout  the  year.  Exercise  and  physical   activity  are  important  for  a  healthy  body.  To  maintain  a  healthy  body  everyone  should  try   to  have  60  minutes  of  physical  activity  daily.  The  students  are  strongly  urged  to  develop  a   habit  of  engaging  in  physical  activities  both  during  school  and  outside  of  school  time.  To   help  facilitate  an  understanding  and  to  develop  health-­‐related  Jitness  (cardiovascular   Jitness,  strength,  muscular  endurance,  and  Jlexibility)  students  are  taught  a  jump  rope   and  healthy  heart  unit,  Jitness  stations  (weights,  medicine  balls,  exercise  balls,  going,  Jit   discs,  step  aerobics,  and  running),  an  obstacle  course  where  students  are  traveling   through  the  heart  while  performing  Jitness  stations,  and  a  healthy  heart  log.  Last  year  we   added  some  new  core  exercises  and  activities  to  our  curriculum.  The  students  also   perform  Jive  Jitness  tests:  Curl-­‐ups,  Shuttle  Run,  Sit  &  Reach,  Pull-­‐ups,  and  a  Mile  Run. The  students  will  be  involved  in  dance  units.  Within  a  two-­‐year   span,  they  will  perform  square,  disco,  line,  new  dances,  and   tinikling.  Juggling  is  also  taught;  and  it  is  a  great  way  to   !improve  eye-­‐hand  coordination,  catching,  and  tossing  skills. The  students  also  perform  exciting  recreational  games   (Cooperative  Games,  Frisbee  Golf,  Ultimate  Frisbee,  Spud,  Steal   The  Cones,  Pin  Bombardment,  1-­‐Pitch  WifJleball,  Mat  Kickball,   !and  Beat  The  Ball). As  always  we  stress  the  importance  of  a  positive  attitude,   respect  for  teachers  and  peers,  doing  our  best,  giving  a  great   effort,  having  conJidence  in  yourself,  and  playing  safely  within  the  rules  of  the  activities. ROLAND-STORY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT October 2016 ! MUSIC  LITERACY  –  Mrs.  Friest We  are  off  to  a  great  start  in  the  5th  and  6th  grade  music  room.  Working  at  the  middle  school,  I  come   to  the  realiza:on  that  my  :me  with  these  fine  folks  is  flying  by.    I  am  in  the  privileged  posi:on  of  knowing  and   teaching  all  students  in  the  Roland-­‐Story  school  district  through  the  6th  grade.    It  is  beyond  a  blessing  to   par:cipate  in  their  growth  for  that  length  of  :me!    And  while  there  are  many  names  to  memorize  (and  the   kids  will  tell  you  I’m  not  always  correct),  I  would  not  change  it  for  the  world.             There  is  always  so  much  that  I  would  like  to  teach  them  and  not  enough  :me  to  ins:ll  in  them   everything  that  I  think  they  should  know  about  music.    So,  like  every  teacher,  I  must  discern  what  it  is  that   students  need  to  know  to  be  successful  and  move  on.    In  this  day  and  age  so  much  knowledge  (correct  and   incorrect)  can  be  acquired  by  using  the  Internet.    And  although  they  can  glean  informa:on  about  composers,   music  defini:ons,  and  different  instruments,  music  remains  a  discipline  in  which  it  is  nearly  impossible  to  be   self-­‐taught.    This  makes  my  :me  with  them  and  the  way  in  which  I  teach  the  Na:onal  Music  Standards  of   utmost  importance.         I  have  heard  conversa:ons  ques:oning  the  reasons  why  it  is   important  for  students  to  learn  to  read  music.    There  have  been  statements   made  to  the  effect  that,  the  actual  reading  of  music  is  really  only  necessary   if  you  are  going  to  play  an  instrument.    I  strongly  disagree.    Music  literacy  is   the  right  of  every  human  being.    My  teaching  philosophy  has  a  strong   emphasis  on  music  LITERACY.    I  do  not  want  them  to  simply  parrot  music   back  to  me,  I  want  them  to  be  able  to  read  and  write  music,  just  as  they  are   able  to  learn  to  read  and  write  in  their  classrooms.    I  am  joyously  teaching  them  the  language  of  music  and   how  to  speak  it;  enabling  them  to  become  more  than  consumers  of  music,  but  people  who  have  the   founda:onal  skills  to  create  and  intelligently  speak  about  music.             I  also  believe  that  singing  should  be  the  founda:on  for  musical  learning.    If  students  are  truly  going   internalize  pitches  and  rhythms,  they  must  create  them  from  within  themselves.    Once  this  knowledge  is   learned,  it  can  then  be  transferred  to  instruments  and  more.    I  want  them  to  be  adults  who  can  sing  without   fear  and  with  the  knowledge  that  they  are  able!         I  have  been  inspired  by  the  Kodály  method  and  this  remains  the  backbone  of  my  teaching.    This   summer  I  finished  my  Master’s  of  Music  with  Na:onal  Kodály  Cer:fica:on  at  Colorado  State  University.    This   three-­‐year  journey  has  been  extremely  difficult,  but  also,  enormously  rewarding  and  I  am  thrilled  about  the   ways  in  which  our  students  are  benefi[ng.      If  you  would  ever  like  to  know  more  about  how  I  choose  to  teach   music  I  would  love  to  speak  with  you  about  it.         As  we  travel  through  this  year,  I  am  choosing  to  expect  excellence  from  our  students  and  myself,  to   never  loose  the  joy  in  music  making,  and  to  serve  others  with  the  talents  and  abili:es  given  to  me.    The  5th   grade  is  right  now  working  on  learning  a  new  pitch  and  the  6th  grade  is  learning  a  new  rhythm  as  well  as  a  new   :me  signature.    They  will  then  get  to  put  those  skills  into  a  choral  se[ng  when  we  start  rehearsing  for  our   December  concert  later  this  fall.    I  also  have  12  students  who  are  audi:oning  for  Opus  honor  choir.  This  year   !we  have  an  Italian  piece  and  it  is  a  wonderful  growth  opportunity  for  those  who  choose  to  pursue  it!     I  love  my  work  and  feel  as  though  I  am  the  luckiest  teacher  in  the  world.    I  have  the  best  students,   !parents,  colleagues  and  administra:on  in  the  state!      GO  NORSE!   ! Middle  School  Music  Notes   Tuesday,  October  11  marks  the  beginning  of  the  2016–17  concert  season   in  the  7/8  music  department.  The  band  and  choirs  will  present  their  fall   !concert  beginning  at  7:00  PM  at  the  middle  school.   The  7th  and  8th  grade  choirs,  under  the  direction  of  Mr.  Chris  Johnson,   will  present  a  wide-­‐ranging  array  of  selections;  from  the  stunning  Herbstlied  (Autumn  Song)  of   Robert  Schumann  to  the  setting  of  heroic  texts  in  Rest  Not!  to  the  beautiful  Sanskrit  text  Gaté   Gaté.  Not  only  have  the  choirs  focused  on  styles  from  multiple   time  periods  and  cultures,  they  have  also  focused  heavily  on   !text  painting  and  emotive  delivery  to  our  audiences.   Now…  about  these  new  robes!  Yes,  the  measurements  have   been  taken  and  the  details  sent  off  to  the  manufacturer.     Thanks  to  the  support  of  our  Roland-­‐Story  community,  our   middle  school  choirs  will  have  beautiful  red  robes  in  which  to   perform.  And,  while  they  will  not  be  delivered  in  time  for  our   fall  concert,  we  will  have  something  else  to  look  forward  to  at   ! our  Christmas  concert!   The  faculty  and  students  are  eager  to  share  their  hard  musical  work  with  the  community,  and   they  know  the  audience  will  Jind  much  to  enjoy.  Come  and  share  in  this  wonderful  beginning  of   !the  students'  musical  year!   ! ROLAND-STORY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT October 2016   ! Middle  School  Music  Notes These  Jirst  few  weeks  of  school  are  so  exiting  for  our  5th  grade   band  program!  All  students  get  the  chance  to  take  the  Selmer  Music   Survey  and  try  the  Jlute,  clarinet,   saxophone,  trumpet,  french  horn  and   trombone  mouthpieces.  We  talk  with   each  student  and  Jigure  out  the  best  instrument  for  each   student  to  be  a  successful  musician.  On  September  15th  we   had  our  5th  grade  Instrument  Night  in  the  middle  school   band  room  where  students  and  their  parents  can  rent   instruments  from  Rieman  Music.  Mr.  Masemann  and  I  are   !both  very  excited  to  work  with  this  5th  grade  class!     The  6th  grade  band  has  already  met  and  is  ready  for  a  great   year!  Our  6th  grade  band  will  be  focusing  on  continuing  to  build  individual  skills  on  their   instruments,  as  well  as  developing  and  growing  as  a  band.  The  6th  grade  students  are  excited  to   !start  working  on  more  challenging  band  music  and  continue  growing  as  musicians.     The  7th  and  8th  grade  band  has  hit  the  ground  running  this  16-­‐17  school  year!  We  have  80   students  in  this  ensemble,  and  everyone  is  ready  for  a  great  year.    We  have  a  brand  new   xylophone  this  year  in  the  middle  school  band  room—it  was   hard  to  tell  who  was  more  excited,  our  percussionists  or  me!  We   have  seven  8th  grade  students  already  working  on  auditioning   for  the  SCIBA  Honor  Band.  These  auditions  are  held  at  the   beginning  of  October,  and  test  students  on  scales  from  memory   and  several  musical  etudes.  The  7th/8th  Band  will  have  its  Jirst   concert  on  October  11th  at  7:00  pm  at  the  middle  school.  The   7th  and  8th  grade  students  are  looking  forward  to  continued   growth  as  musicians,  and  having  a  lot  of  fun  through  various   performances  and  opportunities  this  year!   ! ROLAND-STORY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT October 2016 The  Iowa  Pupil  Transportation  Association  (IPTA)  recognizes  Paul  and  Judy  Teig  for  a  combined   85  years  of  service  driving  a  school  bus.  Paul  for  44  years  and  Judy  for  41  years.  Congratulations   on  this  special  honor!  We  greatly  appreciate  Paul  and  Judy  for  safely  transporting  Roland-­‐Story   students  for  so  many  years.  We  hope  that  they  continue  in  this  important  role  for  many  years  to   !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!com!e.   !Weather-Related Announcements With the onset of winter comes the probability of inclement weather. ROLAND-STORY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT October 2016 !6th  Grade  World  Geography  ~  Mr.  Nelson The  2016/2017  school  year  is  off  to  a  great  start  in  Mr.  Nelson’s  world  geography  class.     Students  in  6th  grade  will  be  learning  about  the  geography,  history,  and  culture  of  places  around   the  world.    We  will  begin  our  study  by  learning  about  the  foundations  of   geography.    Next,  we  focus  on  the  countries  in  the  Western  Hemisphere.    The   students  will  spend  time  learning  about  Canada  and  the  United  States.    They   will  also  learn  about  Latin  American  culture  and  history. During  the  second  half  of  the  school  year  the  students   will  focus  their  learning  on  the  countries  in  the  Eastern   Hemisphere.    We  will  be  learning  about  the  geography,   history,  and  cultures  of  countries  located  on  the   ! continents  of  Europe,  Africa,  Asia,  and  Australia. Current  events  will  be  sprinkled  into  the  daily  routine  and  students  will   be  using  Google  Maps  to  learn  more  about  places  in  the  United  States   and  around  the  world.    The  school  year  promises  to  be  exciting  and  challenging  for  this  year’s   !!!sixth  grade  students  at  Roland-­‐Story  Middle  School. ! ! !8th grade Communications ~ Hannah Joslin! ! This year in 8th grade Communications, we are testing out a Standards-Based Grading system. The goal of this grading method is to better reflect what skills and knowledge students have actually mastered while providing multiple opportunities for them to practice and improve these skills along the way. So far, this has been very successful in 8th grade and I will continue to monitor !what aspects need fine tuning throughout the year. ! ! The 8th grade U.S. History classes also have some fun projects coming up! They will be in charge of the upcoming mock presidential election in early November. Last year, we did something similar for the primary election, but this will be specific to the remaining candidates. This process is a great handson experience for students to investigate our representative government as well as a way for them to discover various ways to participate in politics in their community and beyond. Also, please keep in mind that Veteran's Day is coming up before we know it (November 11th) and students are always in search of a service man or woman willing to be honored in our Veteran's Project.
