introduction happy anniversary once again it is our sister who is always thinking and making sure us boys are doing what is right if it had been left up to us boys i am fairly sure we would have missed the date the occasion brent might have remembered it since his birthday is so close kim called all of us a couple of weeks ago and informed us of her idea it is always hard to come up with a gift for people when they already have everything the could want thank god for kim because she is able to think outside the box and come up with these neat ideas what we have put together for you is a labor of love which has taken 53 years to unfold i would just like to point out that kim is the closest one in age to that number we have compiled just a few or our memories of both of you as we were growing up knowing who we are and how our memories operate we may have a few things mixed up here and there but that is what makes all of us unique we are giving your our own perception of events with took place in our childhood years as everyone was sending me their stories i had the opportunity to see first hand the direction in which each of us individually was going it did not surprise me but there is a theme through all of these stories that theme is the influence the two of you wielded over all of us and the role you played in shaping who we are you will see it read it and absorb it as you read through this collection of our memories i am going to take the liberty to say it here before you go any further we owe the two of you so very much but we know that the only way to repay you is through our love and devotion we hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed putting it together love your family tree 1

grandchildren august 2 2011 dear grandma and grandpa what an exciting opportunity to take a moment and walk down memory lane some of my fondest memories involve both of you and spending time on your farm so this is quite a blessing to sit down and reflect my favorite memories as a kid involved the week we spent with you i especially enjoyed when i was able to stay by myself and receive all of the attention camping wiener roasts pancakes outside playing in your yard day and night going to sioux city to the river walk getting ice cream from mcdonalds playing phase 10 and skipbo resting in the afternoon with a cup of peanuts and a book are a few examples of our time together i remember feeling indulged and loved reflecting back i keep going back to feeling content and relaxed i escaped the hustle and bustle of my daily life of chores practices and other details of my life and for a week i was able to enjoy myself with you what i loved most about visiting was that you both took a very direct interest in my latest hobby or stage in my life i remember going to earl may to look at flowers when i was going through my garden phase you always made me feel so special that not only where you interested in hearing about what was going on but you embraced it i remember countless conversations with grandpa about different types of flowers and how to plant and grow them i have grandpa to thank for encouraging my love of gardening who would have known a funny little hobby in seventh grade could develop into something i still love as an adult as i grew older i always felt so special that you continued to play such an active role in my life traveling to watching me in games attending events i was in during high school and just coming to visit and catch up i loved that you could walk into a sporting event and half of the people there would know you were my grandparents it was a testament to your involvement what a blessing it was to feel so loved and be able to see you on a regular basis despite the miles between us and busy schedules 4

when i was participating in my interview for the fair queen contest one of the questions was who i wanted to live my life like when i was an adult i instantly named the two of you my reasoning was that you were both full of life and took advantage of every opportunity given to you i told stories of you both skiing in retirement visiting foreign countries taking classes at morningside in effort to never stop learning volunteering for different organizations and your loyalty to family and friends i still stand by this statement 12 years later i can only hope i take full advantage of the life that is given to me as you two have you are both quite an inspiration now as an adult i have always appreciated our talks when you visit us and visit you certainly did despite what state we were living in at the time i remember one time in my life when i was starting to feel as if my political views and values no longer lined up with the way i was raised i blame the republican spin machine for that but i digress after one conversation with the both of you about politics values and the state of our nation and i knew i had nothing to fear i knew i could still be the woman who came from a small town in northwest iowa and still hold onto my evolving liberal ideals this is just one example of the guidance i have so appreciated as i have grown up you both have always offered educated thoughtful insight on a variety of topics and i will continue to always appreciate those conversations 5

well what more can i say you both are just so special to me what a lucky person i am to have both of you in my life and to be able to call you my grandparents love laina august 2 2011 dear lee and nancy i ve always felt so fortunate to have an extra set of grandparents in you both sharing holidays with you and being warmly welcomed into your home is a comfort that i have always enjoyed however what sticks with me most is not visiting your home but how you have always found the time and energy to visit laina and i in our homes in our various locations over the years be it in iowa georgia kansas or iowa again you always made your way to see us with a joyful visit i remember you both being some of the last people to visit us in des moines before we set off on our southern adventure and soon after we moved to georgia you were the first to visit us there i can recall touring athens and the uga campus with you and then enjoying some local barbecue for dinner it was comforting to have a family connection so soon after moving somewhere new and helped things feel like home and your caring and thoughtfulness continued when we moved to kansas and you came to visit us after jack arrived now back in iowa i still can always count on your visits to be a real joy we always have good conversation and it s a relaxing time and it leaves us all with a smile on our face thanks for your caring travels and for just being there no matter where `there might be matt 6

my favorite memory with grandma and grandpa is the few years we went on ski trips to welch village in minnesota for three or four years we went skiing the day after christmas with a big group of people from hinton grandpa taught me to ski on the bunny hill he was very meticulous about making sure i knew what i was doing before he let me go on the ski lift to the big hill then after i got my skills down i skied around the mountain with both grandpa and grandma grandma claimed that i was so much better than her but i m pretty sure she lightened up her skills to make me look good at least for the first couple of years those years we took those trips i think i was more excited for the day after christmas than christmas day itself skiing with grandma and grandpa will definitely be one of my fondest memories with them i am very thankful for the time i got to spend with grandma and grandpa and that they introduced me to skiing as it is now one of my favorite pastimes while times have changed since grandma and grandpa met but the stability and support they both provide for each other is undeniably a trait that everybody should model their relationships by only in the past few years have i recognized that as i move into adulthood and create relationships of my own i couldn t ask for better grandparents congratulations on 53 years of marriage i love you guys jamie 7

i have only met lee and nancy once while they were on a road trip from iowa to california during their stay jamie and i decided to take them wine tasting to get the full sonoma county experience we decided to take them to francis coppola winery for lunch and their first wine tasting experience i work for this winery so after lunch i took them on a little behind the scenes tour and explained the wine making process we finished the tour with a few samples of coppola wine from what i understand they don t drink much but by the time they finished the tasting they were feeling pretty good when we were leaving lee and nancy wanted to buy a few bottles of wine they wanted to buy a sweet wine for one of their neighbors and another that had the coppola name on the bottle and could age for a long time kind of like an investment happy 53rd anniversary memories by mitchel my favorite time spent with grandma and grandpa was about 8 years ago i remember marcus was just born mac was 2 and i was almost 5 it was after our basement flooded we spent a week or so at our grandma and grandpa s house when our mom s side had a gas leak so then we moved to their house temporarily there we had a lot of fun and felt truly at home and then at thanksgiving when i hit my head it s funny now but it really hurt back then now i am really grateful for that as i was back then and just want them to know that if they ever need somewhere to stay we are almost always going to say yes because when we needed help they took us in for a while 8

children dear mom and dad we have shared a lot of very special memories from traveling to special 8mes at home one of the earliest memories i have is when we traveled out to nebraska to see dad s cousin aunt paula and dallas went with us and we took the van i remember it was a long trip out there but it was so much fun when we got there i remember going to see the train yard in north plade i also remember traveling around in the van with dad s cousin and he was smoking a pipe and i had to go in back and lay down because it made me sick i also remember going and riding go karts for the first 8me ever i remember when dad was clearing out some of the trees down by the river one night mom decided we would have a weenie roast while dad was burning the trees he had cleaned up so dad started the trees on fire and it was a big fire a little while later we saw flashing lights coming down our pasture towards us and it was the hinton fire department well it turned out that someone from marland heights had seen the fire that dad started and called 911 that was the most exciting weenie roast that we ever had we also went to san diego to see steve graduate from the marines one of the best parts of that trip was when we visited the indian cliff dwellings we also went to the bay in san diego i remember seeing the ocean for the first time ever and we saw an aircraft carrier and took a tour of an old wwii submarine 14
