dear reader a former male model during an interview commented there are only two ways to wear the kira and one way to wear the gho talking on why the bhutanese fashion scene especially its business side was not quite happening but within these limitations young fashionistas both men and women are experimenting even if it s a small change in the collar sleeve or cut at the waist which transforms the look while retaining its essence and they are also exploring international trends and localising it this group is changing the scene and the perception that being a fashionista cannot bring in an income or that bhutanese fashion simply cannot happen it s breaking the notion that all there is to know about fashion is everything to do with what s happening outside their works are becoming real and tangible maybe not like those of doctors and engineers but improving nonetheless businesses are increasingly demanding for models to advertise their products in media designers need them too to get it right fashion photographers and ramp walk choreographers are much sought a er but for now the demands are met mostly based on goodwill and voluntary work gaining recognition especially in the form of payment would enhance the situation and strengthen this creative industry inside · trend street fashion gains momentum pg 10 · q&a making a profession out of fashion pg 14 · exhibition art is one s inside out kinley wangmo write to us at kinley_w@kuensel.com.bt send birthday greetings contribute for the last page or send your feedback pg 21 cover chencho tshering 3

barun wakhley kesang anayat s collection bhutan street fashion bsf the world of fashion k2 kinley wangmo s a young girl kesang anayat grew amid threads needles and the whirr of sewing machine her mother would knit and stitch pieces of yathra into coats for the family kesang never learnt to sew but she grew up with the thirst to create something tangible from the creative drives she o en felt she needed to express in 2007 she started sketching and designing clothes in books which soon became real and tangible i m passionate about art but i can t paint she said designing was something i could do since then kesang in her thirties has been experimenting with textile texture colours and pa erns giving them shape and form to fit a person she started a within fashion industry intellectual property is not enforced designing western outfits embellished with bhutanese designs textiles or pa erns and has comfortably established herself in a niche market that of expats and close friends she has had no formal training in fashion designing and is a bit reluctant to call herself a designer although she believes if one s got the eye for colour and knows designs and pa erns one can be a designer her designs sell for a minimum of about nu 500 the highest price she fetched was nu 65,000 for a jacket made from handwoven silk kira which won the textile museum award usually kesang s designs are modern and sober but it also depends on what people want she s participated like other designers to bring innovation to the national dress for the drukair competition she made a half kira which 5

not too fashion friendly ne good platform for bhutanese designers and models has so far been the annual textile museum competition where designers could showcase their wardrobe in the innovative round but from 2009 the innovative round was struck out because there weren t many participants and the designs were not improving according to textile museum officials organising a show otherwise according to designers is an expensive affair with requirements for sound light event manager and models among others we used to lend our clothes for the competition said designer kesang anayat otherwise we don t have a platform very few shows are usually organised and ge ing sponsors is difficult being a part of fashion and glamour business in bhutan means a lot of goodwill and voluntary works with designers ge ing monetary returns they seem to at least be one step ahead of the rest in the glamour business model kesang deki gyeltshen who is leaving for bangalore to pursue her modeling interest said models in bhutan don t receive the same treatment as those in india at times we re required to bring our own clothes do our own makeup and sometimes looked down at her parents were apprehensive and say she should work here and do the small offers she gets but i want to be more versatile she said i got selected for an assistant lecturer s post through rcsc but i refused but despite working voluntarily i enjoy modelling especially photo shoots she said i ve noticed that now in bhutan even children pose when they are photographed in bangalore she d get paid about nu 8,000 for a two-hour shoot out here the models have to change their mentality too they rush and choose the best clothes when they re supposed to make clothes whatever it s like look good similarly barun wakhley said the differences between india and bhutanese were immense in india it s a part of big firm advertisement and clothing line but here the marketing mode and advertisement is different he said even to organise a show is difficult because there are no sponsors o 6

was a divided pant and a slip-on full kira she also won the innovative award during the annual textile competition while kesang who is also working as the liason officer of mangdechu power project believes designing can be a permanent job she finds it difficult with her two kids i hardly ever get time to design she said similarly few other designers have also established themselves in an niche market which includes expats and friends but designing is not a full-time job but for lhari khamba jr aka karma tshering wangchuk his passion for fashion took a turn when he returned home from india where he studied b com simultaneously with fashion designing at national institute of fashion technology nift i needed something to fall back on said lhari who graduated about two years back a er graduation he worked with the un culture industry he also studied fashion retail at textile and fashion industry training centre taftc in singapore in thimphu before he knew it he was positioned in the fashion world and contributing in his own way his amateur photographs of street trends in thimphu on facebook page bhutan street fashion became instantly popular however when it came to designing lhari felt limited except for some sketches he has not produced any designs yet it s challenging he said the prints out here are amazing but not the fabric which is upholstery it s okay for gho and kira but not flexible for couture besides tailors don t know the different kinds of seams yet he said to design shop collect clothes and accesorise them will be very expensive and then we ve to compete against imported clothes there is no market for fine designing what we design will look very souvenir he said pop images like atsara would work on t-shirts but in markets outside bhutan lhari has had trainings and is already involved in the fashion and glamour scene but he s not sure he ll station himself here or go abroad for model kesang deki gyeltshen in her twenties who has done ramp walks for designers like kesang anayat she brand from bangladesh and magazine photo shoots for businesses like zimdra and clothing stores like daechong and lotus lifestyle her ticket to the fashion world may perhaps be a place where its happening she is leaving for bangalore to work with a bhutanese model paljor gyabak i d flip through magazines 7 photo bsf

as a child and be inspired but i never got the platform said kesang she d met paljor when she studied in bangalore but it was only in her final year that she decided to model a er which offers followed but i had to come back she said however a bhutanese friend had already booked her for a fashion show in thimphu since then kesang has been ge ing steady offers most of which however turned out to be voluntary jobs kesang meanwhile said she s not gone for good i want to gain experience and come back and make use of my 1 experiences here out here we ve no platform to improve she said through modeling i ve gained confidence and become less self conscious similarly barun wakhley who was one of the semi-finalists of gladrags manhunt 2008 a contest organised by gladrags beauty paegents india said he started taking care of his body worked out in gym and gained weight a er he started modeling i was in college in bangalore and my friends encouraged me to send my photographs and personal details to the bangalore times for model of the week it sort of created a platform for barun and soon he was doing photo shoots for designer labels like levis and tommy hilfiger apart from the pocket money it also helped develop confidence time management skills e ique es he said however barun is not too confident of the situation back home being a model and thinking whether you could earn a living out of it makes me think twice he said barun is currently se ing up a book store at the royal thimphu college he said he ll continue to organise shows and choreograph barun had worked with designers to organise and choreograph shows like the bob fashion show and fashion for a cause renew but out here we have to rely on friends and volunteers who are hardly paid he said sometimes it s just nu 500 or a dinner with changing a itude things may chance and fashion could help promote our tradition and culture he said on a positive note 2 1,2,3 :kesang anayat bsf 8

3 kelly dorji s last ramp show for arjun khanna at mumbai fashion week why it s not picking up fast kelly dorji the first bhutanese male model to make it in the indian glamour industry says there is a need for sustainable local market for the fashion business to pick up bhutanese culture isn t conducive to western fashion in a full on way but as money increases we ll see faith in local market he said for aspiring models bhutan is way too small to look at it as market and modeling as the sole career he said having said that it s also possible for an exceptional model to corner a niche market and flourish but i don t see that happening in the next five years at least on the designing front kelly dorji said the launch of the textile academy should give it a boost i think we ll offer the fashion world something unique and distinctly bhutanese while the country is not conducive for an industry fashion otherwise is picked up by bhutanese especially youth our youth are among some of the best dressed in asia i believe barring a few korean popstar lookalikes he said they are consciously dressed and carrying themselves so well bhutan street fashion bsf on the web he said is a great advocator of style and individualism i see bsf as a potential mainstream influence in bhutan in the near future for fashion and glamour business to pick up kelly said preparing talent to perform internationally and later returning to contribute would make it grow kelly dorji started modeling when he was studying in mumbai he took up law but discontinued as modeling weighed in greater he studied modeling photography and training in pageantry 9 according to kelly a model s professional life can be ten years long on an average in the east and about 5-7 in the west except for some obvious exceptions my modeling career ended many years ago when i became an actor in 2005 model kesang deki gyeltshen posing for k2 magazine photoshoot

q&a making a profession out of fashion paljor gyabak 27 has been a model for the past seven years in india he was selected as one of the top five models in the gladrags manhunt and won two titles mr elegant and best model currently he has set up a studio in bangalore which train and make portfolios for aspiring models he shared his experiences aspirations and expectations from the fashion world with kuensel s kinley wangmo how did you get introduce to the glamour industry it was accidental i started by participating in a fashion show competition gardenia while studying at garden city college in bangalore from there on i participated in a string of intercollege fashion events and won many contests i also won mr bangalore title and soon i was doing shows for fashion icons like shilpi choudhury prasad bidapa and rahul dev she y and then i participated in the gladrags manhunt the competition made me seriously think of taking modeling as full-fledged profession i got offers and did television ad with john abraham for fast track a music video for kumar sanu and ramp walks for lakme fashion week van heusen fashion week and india fashion week what did you study in college was it something related to fashion i was a pure science student with dreams of becoming an environmentalist i opted to study microbiology because environment was a vast subject i was hoping to work in some pathological lab as a research scientist i never knew participating in gardenia would change the course of my life how is the competition in india it s an uphill climb i m in the midst of cu hroat competition where everybody with a good face and height wants to be a model thankfully my parents have been very supportive the gladrags manhunt titles brought a load of assignments my way which heightened my profile as an established model what do you think of the fashion business situation back home i used to come home once or twice a year but a er graduating i decided to stay back and work in a call centre and pursue my modeling career then the fashion scenario in bhutan was still at an infant stage with just one traditional fashion show being organised in a year i felt i needed a lot more experience and knowledge to qualify and do something effective and lasting back home but it s picking up thanks to a few who have taken initiatives but we re still not in that stage where modeling profession can sustain a person in bhutan there is a keen interest in fashion photography and designing and shopkeepers are increasingly demanding models to advertise their products do you think it will take off and become a part of bhutanese culture designing and photography are careers with a strong base and no age limit from my experience here i know fashion photography and designing have always exceeded its usual prospects with the number of models coming to make their portfolios and also buyers investing on a particular brand s design wear the demand for models in bhutan is a symbol of growth and advancement in fashion scenarios right now models in our country don t mind deriving nothing from modeling provided they get an opportunity but if people are to employ such services i feel they deserve to be paid 14
