This includes dealing with any forms that need to be signed and returned.

Studying: Psychology, Spanish, Philosophy and Ethics I decided that I wanted to get involved with the student Leadership Team in Year 12. During the year I found myself making the most of the many opportunities which were thrown my way by the College; especially with the Lourdes Pilgrimage and Spiritual Depth team. This involvement helped me to develop as a person and I found myself saying ‘yes’ to opportunities that at the start of the year I never thought I would. Being a part of the student leadership team seemed like the perfect opportunity to give back to the College that gave me so much. My major aim as Head Girl is to encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of the prospects we’re provided with and leave college with more than just some qualifications.

Being part of the Student Leadership Team gave me the opportunity to give something back to a college that has given me so much. Carmel College is much more than a place to achieve excellent exam results. It may sound like a cliché, however it is nonetheless true. I came into Year 12 as a shy, reserved student who kept himself to himself, however as I have progressed through the VI Form, I found myself making the most of the opportunities that came my way. I implore any student who comes to Carmel VI Form to do the same. I feel that I have grown as a person as a result of my time here at Carmel and my main aim as Head Boy is to extend that to all students in the VI Form.

The Extended Leadership Team consists of six teams, which offer something for everyone. We hope to enrich the time spent at Carmel 6th Form and below are the aims and purposes of each of our teams.
Academic Strength focuses on the activities that are designed to enrich our students in all things academic, whilst enhancing the community ethos of the College. Such activities will include debating current events, helping lower school students improve their literacy skills and assisting Year 12’s with their transition into VI Form.
This team is responsible for the design and production of the Carmel VI Form wear. The clothing available is a range of t-shirts and hoodies designed by the team. As well as design, they are responsible for the organisation of sizing, cost and production. This includes advertising in many different media forms such as leaflets and posters.
Activities will include; a VI form choir and band, gigs in the Atrium involving those interested in music lower down tI the school and liaising with the events team to arrange musical events.
We are trying to achieve a more active Carmel College by organising activities. Our aim is to arrange more fixtures and overall get more pupils doing sport.
As Spiritual Depth, we aim to promote religion as an active part of the College, encouraging all students to feel part of a community together. We offer the chance to be involved in religious events and gatherings. The Spiritual Depth team do not solely focus on religion but encourage and promote the College, coming together to help those in need, for example the Shoebox collections at Christmas.
As the Events Team, we’re known for helping to organise Carmel socials events. These nights are a lot of fun and a great chance for everyone to mingle. However, we’re not just there for this and we’d also love to help make as many other great events happen as possible this year. So whether it’s suggesting the music choice for the socials or an idea for an event you’d like to make happen, please talk to our team.

Core Enrichment is a bespoke course designed to complement post-16 studies across the curriculum, whilst also allowing time and opportunity for the development of personal, interpersonal and social skills. It consists of modules which take place over each half term and those studied include: Freedom, Crime and Punishment; Philosophy and the Arts; Science and Religion; Spirituality; Media; Politics and Economics and Ethics. A reflective journal is used to record thoughts, key questions, ideas and personal opinions on each module throughout the year. This has been designed to support the teaching and learning resources and to encourage the development of independent thought and research skills. The reflective journal includes key questions, which require a personal, balanced and critical response. Two modules are project based and focused on aspects of Social Justice (Year 12) and Aspirations and Vocation (Year 13) and will involve delivery from members of the Youth Parliament and representatives from local and international charities. The subject is internally assessed via the reflective journal, which is completed throughout the year in lessons and marked by subject specialists.
why study this subject?
The subject enriches the student experience in terms of academic study, personal growth and selfawareness. The learning methods incorporated into the course provide such an experience whereby students can participate in: teaching and learning seminars; debate and discussion; group work; reading and research methods; forms of media and communication and public speaking. Within the subject content and resources, there are opportunities for students to develop qualities and characteristics such as: empathy, collaboration, self-discipline, critical thinking, reliability, respect and self-esteem. This whole person approach ensures that we engage our students within the ethos of Catholic teaching and invites them to be challenged in their thinking on core issues of meaning, relevance and importance for life today.
Any application to Higher Education or Employment will be greatly strengthened by the breadth of skills and depth of knowledge students will develop in Core Enrichment. As the course is so diverse in terms of its curriculum content, links to careers and methods of learning, it means that students have a wealth of opportunities in a variety of areas. Examples of future careers related to this subject are Social Work, Public Services, Education, Law and Public Relations to name but a few. The very nature of Core Enrichment means that the subject will always be student-centred and adapted according to the needs of those students, to ensure the best possible, positive and engaging experience for all.
epq as level extended project
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a stand alone qualification designed to extend and develop students’ skills in independent research and project management. The EPQ is awarded UCAS points worth half an A-level and is recognised by universities and employers; some leading universities, such as Durham University, make alternative offers to students undertaking an EPQ. The EPQ requires students to carry out research on a topic that they have chosen and is not covered by the other qualifications. They then use this research to produce a written report and, in the case of practical projects, an artefact or a production. A student can take inspiration from something studied in class or something completely unrelated to their studies. What does it involve? Students work independently with a staff supervisor for an hour a week to undertake a research project of their choice, producing either a 5,000 word research project or an artefact supported by a 1,000 word research document. The assessment rewards learning process over final product; a successful EPQ student will need the skills to work independently. All our students, no matter what their course of study, are able to add this qualification to their programme.

The EPQ is an independent research project where you can learn about and begin to develop the higher level skills that are essential for university study. You can visit university libraries to gain an insight into the size and scale of them and to experience studying in that environment. The EPQ is increasingly popular with universities looking for candidates who can demonstrate their ability to conduct detailed, independent research in the manner that is expected of a higher education student:
The EPQ is a great addition to any CV as you can tailor the research topic to suit your needs. This allows you to focus on your own area of interest and spend time investigating this in detail, achieving a qualification, as well as developing the skills, knowledge and confidence that will help you in both job and university interviews.

Students are required to produce two coursework and exam units over the two year course. Candidates will develop a coursework portfolio based on given themes, such as “Music”, “Structures”, “Feast for the Eyes” and “Surfaces”. The GCSE Art course requires students to work in sketchbooks, researching and developing ideas, towards a final outcome. All units of work will include looking at the work of other artists and designers, supported by visits to galleries and museums. Teaching is directed at the needs, strengths and interests of the individual student. All units of work are tailored to allow the individual to explore original and creative solutions in any or several of the following techniques: print making, sculpture, photography and ICT, painting and drawing, mixed media and collage relief techniques. There is a balance of learning activities, which include specific skill and technical instruction, self and peer assessment and one to one tutorials. Students choosing to do the full A2 course will be assessed on their personal investigation (60%) and an externally set unit (40%). This is internally marked and externally moderated. For students opting to only complete AS, the coursework portfolio (60%) and externally set unit (40%) is internally marked and externally moderated.
why study this subject?
Art enhances fine motor skills, hand-eye co-ordination, problem solving skills, lateral thinking, complex analysis and critical thinking skills. No matter what career you choose, those who can arrange, present and display material in a way that is aesthetically pleasing have an advantage. Art makes us look at things anew, appreciate beauty, embrace diversity, it broadens our cultural horizons and develops our personal resources. Communicating with colour and shape and form awakens the imagination, sharpens our senses and expresses our identity. If you love making art, you’ll miss it when it’s gone. And if you do choose to study Art, it is likely to be your favourite class of the day.
There is a wide variety of careers that you could follow with an art qualification; graphic designer, packaging designer, milliner, photographer, stylist, advertising designer, architect, fashion designer, video editor, web design, film director, jeweller, animator, children’s book illustrator, cartoonist, interior designer, stage/costume designer, fashion journalist, printmaker, fabric designer, camera operator, selfemployed artist or a teacher.
Biology develops the skills of planning, evidence gathering, analysis and critical thinking. As well as the more obvious career links such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, ecology, veterinary medicine, etc., it is looked favourably upon for a large number of non-science careers and courses, including Law, Computing, Accountancy, Teaching and Sports Science. This list is by no means exhaustive and there is a huge number of other careers and degree courses which look favourably on Biology. Biology clearly combines well with the other science subjects and mathematics but is also commonly taken alongside subjects such as psychology, sport and geography.
In Year 12 (and AS) biology students will study: Cell structure and Microscopy; Biochemistry; Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids; Enzymes; Biological Membranes; Cell Division, Cell Diversity and Cellular Organisation; Exchange with the environment; Transport in animals; Transport in plants; The immune system and disease; Biodiversity; Classification and evolution. For the full A level, all of the above topics are studied, plus: Communication and homeostasis; Excretion; Nervous Communication; Hormonal Communication; Responses to change; Photosynthesis; Respiration; Genetics and Cellular control; Patterns of Inheritance; Manipulating Genomes; Cloning and Biotechnology; Ecosystems; Populations and Sustainability. During VI Form lessons, you will experience various teaching methods and styles such as demonstrations, practical work, lectures, handouts/notes, ICT work and one-to-one support. You will be expected to work much more on your own than you did at GCSE and to take a greater responsibility for your own organisation and learning. There are five main areas that A level students need to be prepared for: organising time, coping with workload, note-taking, reading around the subject and self-motivation. Students will sit the AS exams at the end of the first year of study. All exams will have questions covering the whole of the relevant subject content – there are no “module” exams – and include a range of question styles: multiple choice, structured questions and longer answer, essay questions.

Biology is the study of life and is therefore a very wide-ranging subject, examining the functioning and inter-dependence of living organisms from the molecular level, through the microscopic and whole-organism levels, to global issues of ecology and sustainability. Biology is regarded as the youngest of the main sciences and every day there are new discoveries being made as more and more focus is given to biological research, which is a rapidly-expanding field. Many of the big challenges that face the world in the 21st century, such as coping with climate change, feeding an expanding population, combatting disease, etc. will all need to be answered with the help of biologists.
