the western weekender friday august 5 2011 news local 3 he was left with a party in turmoil following the march 26 liberal election landslide but john robertson is a born fighter p remier barry o farrell may have his north west rail service in the pipeline but opposition leader john robertson said an express railway from penrith to the city is what commuters really need speaking exclusively to the weekender on monday mr robertson said he was very supportive of mr o farrell s commitments to infrastructure in western sydney so far but more needs to be done the government is talking about additional housing in western sydney which is great but you then have to talk about what infrastructure spending is needed he said what we re not seeing is any proposals for significant investment in infrastructure to support additional housing here and what i would like to see is the government come on board with an idea we were proposing when we were in government and that is the western express line an express railway line from penrith to the city mr robertson said the north west rail line might have a detrimental impact on western sydney commuters the rail line into the city is pretty much at capacity and we ve got a situation where they are talking about the north west rail line which is great but the capacity to get trains into the city is so restricted that without the western express or a relief line the only way to add services from the north west will be to cut back on other services such as from western sydney mr robertson said he would like to see more funding in this year s state budget dedicated to health education and infrastructure despite treasurer mike baird s claims that the budget will be constrained mike baird is trying to do what nick greiner did in 1988 he tried to create a nsw opposition leader john robertson speaks with cassandra o connor [photo melinda jenkins sense of fi nancial crisis so he could push through all these massive changes and cuts in public sector wages and redundancies barry o farrell and mike baird have tried the same thing wages are going to be capped at 2.5 per cent there s redundancies talk of jails being closed but it s just a political tactic he said in the upcoming budget they also should be talking about upgrades to the m5 and m4 now at the moment they are in negotiations with the m5 operators but so what they need to do something about the m4 and there has been nothing of any substance proposed there mr robertson said the upcoming state budget is not going to be the western sydney saviour it has been made out to be the reality is going to be that for the people in western sydney who rely on a lot of front line services are going to see a lot of cuts he said mr robertson said the effects from these front line cuts would be compounded by wage caps and increasing electricity prices as for labor s own future in western sydney mr robertson said he is keen to rebuild trusting relationships with the community we disappointed a lot of people in that last term of government there is no question about that the only way we are going to see people out here come back to labor is by developing policies that reflect their expectations of us in government he said fundamentally the problem at the moment is that we have a premier who is the minister for western sydney but lives on the north shore i have spent more than two decades living in western sydney i have raised my family in blacktown we need somebody who can actually relate to western sydney and we do not have that at the moment this story appeared first online on our website see www.westernweekender.com au for the latest penrith-related news laser hair removal sale shop 151-152 585 high st open 7 days till late bikini brazilian u/arms lower legs full back $129 $169 $119 $199 australia s largest most experienced clinics offer ends 1 september 2011 laserclinics.com.au 02 8014 8914 1009wwd8111

4 opinion friday august 5 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk troy dodds like for the family of 20-year-old rose rain howell who went missing from bellingen on april 11 2003 on sunday april 13 rose didn t return home her mother had thought she was with friends in bellingen for the weekend th is wasn t unusual as she often spent weekends at her friends homes at the time of her disappearance rose was in good spirits and excited about her upcoming birthday party on april 21 rose was last seen in bellingen on friday april 11 in the afternoon police have received reports that rose was seen hitch-hiking on the southbound lanes of pacific highway that day troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au 1014wwd3527 t 9.30am family service 6pm night service 1014wwd7422 tanya davies mp member for and wife facing an horrific battle that unless a miracle occurs will end in the saddest possible of ways families are torn apart and changed each and every day some by the unpredictable nature of our health some by tragic accidents others by drugs or alcohol but perhaps the most tragic is when you do not have someone or something to blame not knowing can be the worst form of suffering th is week is missing persons week and as a true crime buff i always take a keen interest because the stories of those who simply vanished without a trace are often remarkable always puzzling and never simple last saturday morning i was driving into the city at around 4.30am and i heard an interview on radio 2ue with a mother whose son had disappeared some years ago she spoke with an emptiness in her voice and with a hole in her heart i began to imagine that being up at 4.30am was nothing new for her a good night s sleep is probably something she hasn t had since the day her son went missing there are so many stories this week and unfortunately the majority of them won t get all that much space across our major newspapers radio stations and television networks old news many of them might say a needle in a haystack exercise is one other argument but one has to think about the families in weeks like these when something like missing persons week is on hopes would obviously be raised for each person reported missing there are 12 people directly affected by their disappearance rose who would now be 27-yearsold is 160-165cm tall with hazel eyes and an olive complexion at the time of her disappearance she had short dark hair worn in a mohawk style rose has lymphodema in her right foot causing her to walk with a slight limp police have received additional reports although unconfi rmed indicating that rose may have moved between cairns sydney kempsey melbourne woolgoolga and corindi imagine the family of rose holding on to hope that she is alive and having no idea why she disappeared now imagine she s your daughter just as mysterious is the disappearance of 23-year-old ian stanton who was last seen on may 9 2003 on that day ian was at his bundanoon home when his father visited delivering him a quantity of groceries four days later ian s mother went to the home and found the front door open and the groceries untouched ian s parents reported him missing to police soon after at the time of his disappearance ian had a medium build short brown hair and a full beard he was 190cm tall in the days following ian s disappearance there were alleged sightings of him in the surrounding district police have also received unconfi rmed sightings in queensland and canberra years later closer to home there was the remarkable story of lynette melbin lynette was last seen at penrith plaza on june 5 1972 she had resided in the local area at the time of her disappearance lynette has made no contact with family or friends since that date 35,000 people are reported missing to police each year in australia that s one person every 15 minutes over half 52 per cent of those reported missing are 16 years and under while in australia 95 per cent of missing persons are found within a short period of time the lasting impact particularly on families is devastating the most common missing persons are girls aged 13 to 15 research indicates that for each person reported missing there are 12 people directly affected by their disappearance the three primary groups at risk of going missing are those suffering from a mental illness the elderly and young people in nsw there are currently more than 600 people listed as long-term missing people often believe that you have to wait 24 hours before reporting someone missing but that s a myth not knowing what happened to someone and not knowing the circumstances behind their disappearance is incredibly harrowing when we see these faces flash across our screens we should take notice because someone out there is hurting
