Advantages of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)  Anytime, anywhere access to learning  The ability to develop “ digital’ folders and work for their classes (that can’t be lost, never need replacing and are environmentally friendly) through Google Apps for Education (GAFE)  Anytime, anywhere access to public e-books, data bases and catalogued web resources  Anytime, anywhere access to limited resources and information on the internet  The ability to draft, redraft and publish work at the click of a button  Students becoming active partners in their learning Research citing the potential benefits of e-Learning Noeline Wright’s (University of Waikato) 2009 literature review looking at e-Learning and implications for New Zealand schools highlights the following benfits of e-Learning afforded by access to internet capable devices as:  Improved motivation and engagement  Greater independence and personailsed learning  Improved critical thinking and development of multi literacies  Greater opportunities for collaboration in wide contexts, including international ones  Greater access to information, resoures and experts E-Learning in the New Zealand Curriculum By introducing e-Learning at Marlborough Primary School we are attempting to prepare our students to be 21st Century Learners as our pupils will be entering a world looking for abilities far different from the traditional values. The New Zealand Curriculum (Page 38) states that e-Learning may:  Assist the making of connections by enabling students to enter and explore new learning environments, overcoming barriers of distance and time  Facilitate shared learning by enabling students to join or create communities of learners that extend well beyond the classroom  Assist in the creation of supportive learning environments by offering resources that take account of individual, cultural, or developmental differences  Enhance opportunities to learn by offering students virtual experiences and tools that save them time, allowing them to take their learning further Check out: Dr David Parsons, Associate Professor Massey University, explains the need to teach higher level thinking skills and develop key competencies using technology to prepare students for the 21st century. 2|Page

Considerations before purchasing a device Price Purpose Longevity Weight Battery Life Screen Size Wireless capability Warranty Technical Support Internet Browser RAM Protection Insurance Anti-Virus Extra Peripherals How much do you want to spend? What is your budget? What is the device going to be predominantly used for? Will the device only be used by your child at school? How long do you plan to use the device for? Are you looking for a long or short term solution? What sort of device does your child’s intended intermediate school prefer? Is it heavy? Remember your child will be carrying this to and from school every day. This should be at least 5-6 hours as pupils will not be allowed to recharge devices at school. Minimum 10 inches. Wireless networking capability is required. Minimum of 1 year warranty but you may want to consider extending this especially if the device is going to move to your child’s next school with them or will be passed onto a younger sibling. Should your device require repair or maintenance-how long will the device be away for repair and what is covered under the warranty. Please note that Marlborough Primary School does not offer Technical support or repair. The Google Chrome Browser is necessary for our system so make sure your device can run this. A Minimum RAM (Random Access Memory) of 2GB is required but you may want to consider 4GB so the device runs quicker. The device will require a suitable case to protect it from the weather and should be named appropriately. It is the responsibility of the owner (Family/ Caregiver/Whānua) to insure the device from loss or damage. We recommend that you check to see if you are already covered by your existing household insurance policy. It is nearly impossible for a Chromebook to be infected by an actual virus. Headsets or ear buds are useful for private listening as long as they are compatible with your device. Common Learning Platforms at Marlborough Primary School Google Apps for Education- we use a customised “Marlborough Primary School Google Apps for Education” environment for teaching and learning. Google Apps for Education provides students with a free office type environment which, via the internet, is available at both school and home. Using Google Apps for Education (GAFE) mean that devices do not require software such as Microsoft Office. GAFE runs on an internet domain owned by the school and is intended for educational use. Once pupils leave Marlborough Primary School pupils will require their own account. In addition to Google Apps for Education Marlborough Primary School will utilise website and online services to enhance the learning of students. Student work and progress in the BYOD classes will be monitored by the teacher using Hapara’s Teachers Dashboard, which enables viewing and access across all the students work/documents. Please note that as long as the BYOD device is connected to the school Wi-Fi then it communicates through the N4L firewall and filter. As the GAFE is run by Marlborough Primary School administrators have the right and ability to monitor accounts for policy and security. This means that students and their families should not expect BYOD devices or their internet histories to remain private. Safety Guidelines and Responsibilities Security:  Devices are to be held in a lockable cupboard within the classroom.  Devices are not to be used without express permission by the teacher at break times and lunch. If permission is granted then the teacher must be in the room.  Students are responsible for their own devices. It should be transported to school in a suitable manner and be clearly named.  No software or updates will be carried out at school on student devices. Parent’s Responsibilities:  Insurance of the device.  Naming all equipment (including device and its bag).  Sending a device that meets the minimum requirements. Student’s Responsibilities:  Charging the device at home.  Responsible for the device at school and their behaviour at all times. This includes when other pupils may be sharing their screen during collaborative group work.  For additional examples of students responsibilities please refer to the “My Digital Citizenship Agreement”.  The use of BYOD/ICT in school should be viewed as a privilege not a right. 4|Page

Cyber Safety and digital Citizenship When a Digital e-Learning classroom is started up routines and class treaties are developed to include online safety which is then reinforced throughout the year. At Marlborough Primary School we will be aiming to develop a digital citizen who is:  a confident and capable user of ICT  uses technologies to participate in educational, cultural and economic activities  uses and develops critical thinking in cyberspace  is literate in the language, symbols and texts of digital technologies  is aware of ICT challenges and can manage them effectively  use ICT to relate to others in a positive and meaningful way  demonstrate honesty, integrity and ethical behaviour in their use of ICT  respects the concepts of privacy and freedom of speech in a digital world  contributes and actively promotes the values of digital citizenship  capable of showing respect to ‘Myself, Other People and their Surroundings’ in the digital medium Check out: For some ideas about prices and specific features of different devices MPS BYOD 5|Page
