the italian riviera proposes courses in regular sessions at the suggestive location of the northern tuscan coast seated in forte dei marmi the academic curriculum is designed to offer an interdisciplinary selection of courses that draws upon specific case studies experienced on-site in a highly unique area of italy full of particularities for its local culture cuisine economies varied geography and arts the program supports sustainable learning cultural studies and community immersions the italian riviera located on the northern tuscan coast is just an hour train ride heading west from florence the area holds historic prominence being one of the first tourist destinations in all of italy sought out primarily for its seaside position framed by the apuan alps artists from michelangelo to henry moore drew their inspiration from this stretch of land where the ocean meets the mountains its rich geography and culture provides a breathtaking campus location where the communities and cultural lifestyle provide the sources of daily learning this program is recognized and sustained by the city of forte dei marmi objectives · to immerse students in a community-specific context where italian traditions and culture are still intact · to immerse students in a region-specific context of academic study · to increase awareness of the importance of community and how sustainability preserves the integrity and livelihood of territories arts society are essential to the identities of sustainable communities footprint on a local culture and location in destinations unique for their local cultures economies histories and societies lectures visits to historic and contemporary sites tastes of local gastronomy expanded cultural horizons and contact with local culture will directly strengthen and challenge perspectives of italy students can attend a one-week session in the italian riviera and continue their studies with three or six-week sessions either in florence or the italian riviera · credit load up to 6 credits approval from home institutions required to earn more than 3 credits per session · classes are held monday through friday students select three week courses from the regular riviera schedule students can attend one session in the italian riviera and continue their studies with three or six-weeks sessions in florence · credit load up to 7 credits · classes are held monday through friday this four-week program begins with a week of field study and travel research in tuscany students travel and research learning on location in destinations unique for their local cultures economies histories and societies the following three weeks are held at the italian riviera location where students may choose from the regular riviera schedule of three week courses students can attend one session in the italian riviera and continue their studies with three or six-week sessions in florence 6 weeks held over both sessions internship areas local restaurants and hotels museums and cultural centers beginning italian learners italian language in first session and internship in the second session internship may begin in the first session along with an intermediate language course if student has sufficient command of italian courses from the regular riviera schedule may be added to both sessions if schedules lecture hours the course will introduce students to the outstanding richness of tuscan wine typologies focusing particularly on a presentation of the most important winegrowing areas in tuscany a
