Over the Garden Gate Page 3 Garden of the Month Small Drought Tolerant Garden Provides Beauty and Privacy By Judy Spencer Planters and Groomers By Gerry Yockey I want to start off by saying thank you to Judy Crisp, Doris Giomi and April Ford.  We had such a good time at Judy’s home in September.  Her place is always beautiful and for her to ask all of the Planters and Groomers to her home was something special.  Again, thank you Judy. We all planned to have Pixie Kinser and her crew at our office and share a meal with us.  Pixie is in charge of the Whackers and Hackers at the senior center off Scenic.   Doris came up with a better idea.  She wanted everyone to have lunch at her lovely home and have April Ford as her assistant to help her out. We made it a pot luck.  We all had a wonderful time. We fertilized the ground and turned the dirt over.  Pulled out all the flowers and planted new flowers.  Redid the window boxes and raked the yard.  Dan cut the lawn and we fertilized the lawn also.  It was a very busy morning! Thanks to all the girls and boys for your support.  Newcomers are welcome and so are the not so new members.  I think once you come down and start working in the yard, you will find it is a lot of fun.  We work the first Tuesday and the third Tuesday of the month.   Hope to see you there. The garden of Ken and Johnna Bryant, 1804 Encina Avenue, has been selected as the November Garden of the Month, by the Modesto Garden Club. Ken and Johnna felt they should do their part for water conservation, so they made a front garden with low water requirements. A plan was developed using bark mulch, several kinds of grasses, salvia, barberry, and olive trees. This low maintenance front garden also features a dry stream bed for interest. Their house is close to the street, so they had the front fence made taller so it provides privacy for the house. They added a solid steel front gate, which enhances the privacy, and visually goes well with the stacked stone fence. This is a good example of how to make a small garden be functional, water-wise and beautifully complement the house. Hackers and Whackers “Gardening Is a Natural De-stressor” “Gardening is a natural de-stressor”. Please slow down, take a look when passing the Modesto Senior Center on Scenic & Bodem Street. Summer is over but we have lots of color at the Senior Center. Zinnias are still showing off with their oranges, yellows, reds and pinks. The Thyme is still in full bloom of blue tiny flowers, the brilliant orange of the Lantana can’t be missed when traveling down Bodem. Also blooming are the Geraniums. The bright red flower is our favorite! Off the back parking lot is a bed of mixed green foliage which creates a lush, green spot for seniors to hang out. Thank you Whackers and Hackers for your time and love in creating a wonderful environment for our Modesto Seniors! OK—here is the pitch! We need some help! It is time to do our “end of summer clean up and get ready for spring” such as pruning, bed clean-up, etc. etc. Please join us from 8:30 to 10:30, Nov 8th and 22th and of course time out for refreshments. You can just show up or you can Contact Pixie Kinser, 578-4338. Over the Garden Gate Published 10 times a year, September-June, by the Modesto Garden Club, Inc. President: Dan Yockey. Over the Garden Gate Page 5 Forget-Me-Not-Spot By Edie Westerman It appears that Fall is in full swing now. The leaves are changing and coloring our world. What a beautiful time of year! This month also brings us together with family and friends kicking off the holiday season. I hope you all enjoy all the magical moments you will spend with those you love. Happy birthday to all those born in November! The birthday flower for November is the Chrysanthemum. With their mellow golds, oranges and reds that complement the lateautumn leaves, chrysanthemums are a classic way to celebrate the season. The white chrysanthemum means absolute truth and fidelity while the red mum symbolizes love. In October, 54 birthday cards were sent out. Thank you cards were also sent to our October speakers and generous vendors for their donations. We are also thinking about and sending well wishes to Joyce Smith, Shelly Ewan and Mary Lou Rice. Please call or text me (Edie) at (209) 204-8053 to let me know of members who may need cards sent to them. You are also welcome to email me at ediejw@hotmail. Please note in the subject line “Modesto Garden Club” so I won’t miss your email. Until next time remember: “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” - Albert Camus

Page 6 New Member Tea Over the Garden Gate Getting to Know You: All About Charla Zuhlke I was born in Dodge City, Kansas where my dad pastored his first church. I moved a bit as a preacher’s kid, but most of my growing up was in Denair, CA. I loved living in the country and going to a school where you knew pretty much everyone. Growing up in the Central Valley was special with all the fresh fruit and nuts and veggies. And a small, friendly town like Denair was a good place to raise a family. In high school our big event was to cruise Turlock, from the Foster’s Freeze near Canal Ave. to the Foster’s Freeze at the other end of town, out Lander almost to the freeway. My husband and I met at church in Ceres when we were seniors in high school. We ended up graduating from Stanislaus State a few months after we were married. We celebrated our 45th anniversary this year. A few months after graduation I started teaching in Salida, when there was only 1 school in that district and the grades were Kindergarten to 8th. I started out teaching in Kindergarten, which I loved. After I had my daughter in 1977, I substituted in the primary grades in Salida and Modesto, and taught part time. My last 20 years in education, before I retired in 2011, was teaching Independent Study at Elliott Education Center. I worked one-on-one with students who were, for many different reasons, not in a traditional classroom.  I really enjoyed this job, and hope and pray I made a difference in their lives in some way! My husband, Martin, and I love traveling and have been to a large number of our United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. Though we’ve been to Canada a couple times, there is so much to see in our U.S. that we’re very happy continuing to explore here. Martin and I retired at the same time, and as well as traveling, we keep busy gardening, being involved in our church, and doing volunteer activities in the community. We also like to spend time, when we can, with our 12-yearold granddaughter, though she lives in Mountain View, Ca. Not too far, but of course we’d like it closer! My friend, Nancy Smith, encouraged me to join Garden Club in 2012. It has been a great way to meet many people I may never have otherwise, and to learn more about gardening and other fascinating things. I work on the Therapeutic garden box at Bethel Retirement and I love working with Joyce Smith in this service. I am always so amazed at how many, and how varied, the projects are that our Garden Club does in our community! This is a great group of women.

Cindy and Dede (right) Downtown Pot Planting By Dan Yockey Hi everyone, I am sure most of you are aware that the Garden Club has been struggling the past few years to produce a quality product are creative, thinking of new design ideas for the Raffatunity table. that would exemplify the image of the Garden Club and our partners the Downtown Improvement District, and the Modesto Parks Department. Five years of drought and no budget from the city to keep the pots watered has diminished the quality severely. SAVE THE DATE! At the September Board meeting Cheryl Carmichael brought up these concerns and outlined the problems we have been facing Christmas in the Country including the possibility of not planting the pots again until we have assurances that what we plant will be watered and not die Holiday Boutique 2016 from the lack of it. On Cheryl’s behalf I met with all of the parties Fri. & Sat. Nov. 4 & 5 | 9am to 6pm involved with the idea that some compromise could be reached. The following agreement was made. The number of pots will See Our Artisans Creations: be reduced from 247 to 100 and these pots will be stationed on I, J, and K streets. This will allow Parks to water each pot two times per week instead of the once a week currently scheduled. The remaining pots will be moved to the City Corporation yard and stored until we are able to place them on the streets again. The pots will be planted on Saturday, November 5,2016. We Location: The Ferrero Family Barn 668 N. Blossom Rd. in Waterford need at least 25 volunteers on that date. If you wish to participate contact Gerry Yockey at or at 484-0359 to volunteer. Final information will be sent to you in an E flash prior to the planting date. I hope to see you on Saturday, November Off Hwy. 132, 3 miles east of the Fruit Yard Restaurant. Take left on N.
